Q: Is the heat from a flame mainly radiation or convection?

import_hillI'm learning about the three types of heat transfer conduction, convection, and radiation. An example the teacher gives us is a campfire which involves all three. Now I know that the hot air rising is convection and I also know that the fire gives off electromagnetic waves in the form of visible ...

Q: In Cosmology, what does it mean to be 'local'?

Gluon SoupI'm trying to make a point that there is curvature of spacetime from the metric expansion that contributes to the dynamics of a galaxy. This curvature would be in addition to the curvature caused by the visible mass/energy content of the galaxy. I got back a note from an editor saying "In the l...

Q: Hypothetically, why can't we wrap copper wires around car axles and turn them into electromagnets to help charge the batteries?

That1GuyWe already have a magnetic core, why can't we use it to recharge the batteries? The only problems I see with it are potentially wiping magnetic data, but doesn't the electromagnet have to be revolving around the damageable device?

Q: Why didn't the debris collapse back into the Earth at the time of Moon's formation?

A studentThe most accurate theory for the formation of our moon is the Giant impact hypothesis, which says that a Mars sized body collided with our Earth and after this collision all the debris get spreaded and these debris moving in an orbit then recombined to form our moon. But why didn't those debris f...
