Let’s run some numbers. Internet suggests llama upkeep costs are around \$1,000 a year; the cost of an adult llama is as much again. Presumably the latter would go down significantly due to economies of scale, but to be conservative, suppose not. Add another \$1,000 per llama-year for admin overhead. Around 1.5% of the population will be 43 each year. So per million of population, this scheme will cost \$3,000 * 1.5% * 1,000,000 = \$45m. So an investment fund of c. \$ 2 billion with 2.5% yield would fund it in perpetuity, or at least until the alpaca revolution comes. —
