The 1812 overture also includes the French national anthem that had fairly recently been used by both the murderous totalitarian revolutionaries and Napoleon, instigator of millions of deaths.
And as another commenter pointed out, the Russians were very much the victims of expansionist aggression in that war.
I certainly hope we'll cut off all ties with Chinese academics, if we're going to play the whole 'you bear blame for your dictatorial government's actions' game. Don't get me started on Saudi Arabian and Iranian degrees.
