I just learned: you can search with wildcards on the Internet Archive. In this particular example, nms.kcl.ac.uk/brian.davies/web_page/LOTS.html is still online but the link to a pdf is broken with no internet archive backup. But the same file was backed up under a different name, which I found by searching for
nms.kcl.ac.uk/brian.davies/*
