Actually, when I look at the pdf file of "Gregory R. Grant: Linear Algebra
Hoffman & Kunze 2nd edition Answers and Solutions to Problems and Exercises Typos, comments and etc..." dated July 2017, the solution of this specific exercise is not there: http://greggrant.org/hoffman_and_kunze.pdf http://greggrant.org/
Maybe the version from which you copied the solution in your post is from some older and the author now removed the solution?

The solutions you were looking is incomplete. He completed it later, but complete version is not available on internet.
Try this one it's the complete solution.
If you see the date it's august 25th 2019. I think he will update the solution in some time.
