The pseudoscience concept of "energy quality" is sort-of relevant here. Mains electricity would be considered high-grade energy. Heat is low-grade. Certainly, some of the heat used to generate electricity is lost, with the implication being that the properties of electricity make the loss worth it. A CHP system in your house would clearly be more efficient in terms of fuel consumption.
