There's a tool called diskpart you can use. Open a command prompt and type diskpart

You'll get an "are you sure" warning - just answer Yes

Type list disk and paste the output here. You should get something like this:

DISKPART> list disk

(in my case it's showing my two hard disks)

Disk 2 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> list part

Use the right mouse button to select

and press Enter to copy the selection.

OK, now type clean and this will completely wipe the disk.

DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk.

I suspect you have a dead SD card.

Diskpart is quite a low level tool, so if diskpart cannot format the disk nothing can.

Is this a new SD card or one that was working and stopped?

Yes sir, it was working and then stopped (corrupted sd card)

If you look in Event Viewer you'll probably see disk errors being reported.

If diskpart is still hung you'll need to press ctrl-C to interrupt it.

I don't have much experience with SD cards as I normally only use pen drives for removeable storage. Was it a cheap SD card or one from a big name supplier like SanDisk or Kioxia?

SanDisk are normally very reliable. They are my preferred brand. I think you just got unlucky this time.

All SD cards will eventually die, but they should last a long time so it isn't usually a problem.
