@KorvinStarmast btw re what you suggested in Roll20:
> I think it would make good sense, party wise, for you to level up after the short rest but not boost the max HP until after a long rest.

I'd rather you got the ASI, etc, and that Seven Waterfalls add her points or feat.

So let's do this: do all of level up besides boosting max HP, which will go up after next long rest. (But you do have the additional die for HP recovery as of now-who knows if you'll need it before night fall).

You good with that?
not adjusting the max HP seems weird to me, and I will probably forget to do it later :P

@V2Blast Ok, that's a good point. Lemme think, but really, lvl up ought to be done at once. I'll repost at r20 tomorrow.

@MikeQ we play every other Monday, and this next one, the 20th, is our next session. Characters are all level 4, V2Blast just leveled up. They are about to be delivered to the mouth of the Dunwater river and do a recon vis a vis the Lizard folks ... you interested? I have an NPC (Sea Elf) called Oceanus who we can convert into a PC for you, or you can roll up anything you like.
Current party is Monk, Barbarian, Sorcerer, Artificer
My only hard restriction is no Tieflings, Yuan Ti, or K(bird things) as PCs. UA at this point might be a hard sell, but as they say, never hurts to ask.
Party (PC races) so far are Tabaxi, 1/2 Orc, Human, Fire Genasi
My son had a dwarf barbarian but his work schedule changed and he can't participate any more.
I can send you a link to the game via discord if you are interested. Our group includes folks who like to RP (two are a married couple) and one a guy in Michigan. The married couple includes the original DM for this group. I picked up DM as he'd reached a bit of burnout.

I'm very tempted to recycle Salty into this, but I'd rather try something different. Maybe druid? Or warlock?

@MikeQ Heck yes, Salty is very welcome, or a druid, or a warlock.
(Druid would totally rock and IMO perfecctly fit this adventure path)
(I have a personal love for warlock, and as a DM I try to look hard at the Short Rest pacing .... I hate the "only long rests" DMing style. It robs so many classes of neat features.

What sort of roles do the party members take? I imagine that the monk and barbarian mostly punch stuff, but what about the casters?

@MikeQ The sorcerer is shadow, so his great feature (that hound) has not come on line yet. He seems to move between control, attack, and using skills (his background is performer/band leader)
Artificer is artillerist, and he's experimented a bit with his various cannons. He has realized what I pointed out in an answer here: the healing cannon is real neat. (Offers Temp HP)
He goes back and forth between attacking and supporting.
Monk is "get in their grill and claw their eyes out" and doing neat actobatic stunts and moves. Barbarian so far hits things and pushes/shoves them, and does some neat athletic moves. Last battel he jumped up, slid down a rope (on a ship) and knocked heads with an attacking koalinth he otherwise could not reach
RP wise, It's blown hot and cold. Barbarian is a former Salt Marsh Marine. Monk is going Drunken Master, apparently was a bit of an alky back home. Sorcerer has massively excellent social skills. Player is decent RPer. Artificer loves to get into the details of tinkering with tools and gems and such.
Dwarf (my son) is now an NPC who acts as chief of security for the dwarven mine to the west of Salt Marsh.
The party is (in part) on their own quest for the Sorcerer's two former band mates who were kidnapped while out fishing ...

6:39 PM
Hmm. So I'd be starting at 4th level. What level do you expect this to reach?

@MikeQ Yes, start at 4, and if the group stays together ... hmm, there is enough adventur meat to take us to 10-12, maybe more. Were you in the play test for this one, or did you pass on that? (IIRC you passed?) I also have a story line linked to the rest of the World of Greyhawk
One of the adventures later in the seven parts is the one we play tested with Nits.
That story line has had a few hints, but I don't think I've done a great job with the "Three Clue Rule" on that.
Three will be plenty of "at sea" encounters since 1) I love piratical and maritime stuff and 2) this adventure series caters to that.
The last battle was an attempted boarding by 9 Koalinth and 3 Koalinth Sergeants. (they came in three waves). it was a pretty tough fight.
I was thinking: if you do Moon Druid, you can alternate between caster and combatant as you see fit, I suspect. When we play tested I had a Monk 1 Moon Druid 10; I utterly loved the "wild shape into an air elemental" bit. :) Great fun.
And warlock ... well, heh, that is so customizable.
Kenku, that's the work I was looking for.

7:02 PM
@MikeQ half-orc Bear Totem barb (me), Artillerist artificer whose Protector Cannon's temp HP is amazing, Shadow sorc, and tabaxi Drunken Master monk
I hit stuff. real good. :P

Ok, I'm split between druid and... arcane trickster. So many choices!

cool cool
Moon druid, or different subclass?

AT's are fun; my friend in my brother's group has Tasha's as a direct result of me (Hal) watching how Salty used it. Man, when it's on, it's on! Helped us take out a blue dragon.
Hmm, do you want to do a sea elf arcane trickster? (Then again, Oceanus has a few hard coded reactions due to "story" and that might be a dumb idea. Maybe never mind that thought ...)
Another benefit of Moon Druid is you can have a swimming speed creature at level 4 right off the bat. "Mike is now a shark!" might be fun. :)

@KorvinStarmast I mean, that's true of any druid at level 4 (swim speed, I mean). Moon just increases your CR limit

OMG, you can be a giant octopus coming out of the gate! 8^) CR 1.

7:09 PM
ye

Uh, any other druid limited to CR 1/2 until 8th, so no giant octopus for them. :(
Hmm, Giant Shark CR 5 is a bit of a wait .... :( But I think Giant Croc is CR 3?
Nope, giant croc CR 5. (Has nice grapple though ...)

7:30 PM
I'll have to think about it. Is the next session this upcoming Monday or the following?

7:52 PM
next week
4/20
(#blazeit)
:P

@MikeQ I will send you an invite when I get home, and poll the others on "fifth player, yes?" at the same time. I am sure you have one locked in "Yes" vote that isn't mine. :-)
(V2 is such a nice guy)
The games begin at 8:30PM central time. (Due to the married couple life situation) They vary from 2-3+ hours long. It really depends.

8:08 PM
"begin"
:P

@V2Blast start?

3 hours later…
11:22 PM
@KorvinStarmast No, I meant we often start late because we're always waiting on people to show up :P
