@RecuerdosdelaAlhambra Bork says "intellectuals or SOCIALITES" social status, which makes more sense, because an intellectual or a socialite can have social status, but a society can't have social status. Anyway, there is no way the missing apostrophe is intentional. It's beyond unconventional in standard prose - it's an error.
