@RyanKinal top of the morning to yah.
anyone want a couple of kids? will trade for good beer.

No thanks. I prefer kids that I can give back. Like... nephews and nieces.

hehe

You know, I've kind of been wondering by breweries even bother with clear and/or green bottles. They're a little worthless when it comes to storing beer.

Sounds like a good question. :)

Hello
:cheers:

Good morning!
Glad you asked that question- I had no idea clear bottles had uv coatings.

anyone opposed to new question and meta question feeds in here?

@Fishtoaster Me either!
@waxeagle Not at all

@RyanKinal cool, set up message feed bots for meta and site questions. main site questions can get switched to ticker if they become bothersome

Q: Porter in the Marketplace

Ryan KinalRecently, I traveled to Denver, CO, and though I didn't go for beer-specific purposes, I took advantage of a few breweries (and taphouses) that were conveniently close to my hotel. The one I was most excited about was Great Divide, mostly because I had discovered their Saint Bridget's Porter yea...

Q: Why do beer bottles overflow when hit from above?

Fishtoaster You're holding a bottle of beer, mostly full A prankster comes up and hits your bottle from above with hers. Yours immediately and violently overflows (while hers stays unaffected). Of special note is the fact that this does not occur when a beer bottle is hit from below or on the sides. Wh...

Q: What constitutes a Pale Ale?

anthony-arnoldI ask this because I just ordered an "American Pale Ale" and it's actually quite dark in color. So how can I tell a pale ale? What actually defines an ale as pale?

Q: How accurate is Alcohol by Volume in beer?

FishtoasterIf I get a beer labelled 5% ABV, how accurate is that measurement likely to be?

Q: Why use clear or green bottles?

Ryan KinalIn my experience, as well as accounts of others' experiences, it seems that clear and green bottles are inferior to brown bottles for storing beer. I know this is due to the amount of light allowed through the bottle. But why do breweries continue to use green and (especially) clear bottles? Why...

Eww.

I'll assume it won't be that massive every time.

@RyanKinal just the first time

Though, as the site grows, I guess it might be.

7:38 PM
and I screwed up meta.
@RyanKinal right, and it can be switched to a ticker feed if/when that happens

Yep yep

Hey TO.
Interesting- just saw acheong87's new meta question on brand and regional questions.
A rather persuasive argument.

@Fishtoaster yeah. I'm pondering an answer, but mostly it's that being biased against brand specific questions would be preposterous on an industry site where brands are really important

Indeed.
What brand-specific question would we want to allow?

@Fishtoaster see that's the rub, and why I don't have an answer on that meta question yet :)

7:42 PM
Presumably not purely opinion-based ("Is Rogue's new triple-chocolate ipa any good?")

@Fishtoaster right, those are terrible
"what ingredient produces X flavor in Brand Style Y"
might be useful, but I'm not sure it's answerable, and is it really interesting?

Not a bad option
Indeed.

cuz if the answer is...malt....

lol

or hops. that doesn't really get us anywhere interesting

7:44 PM
Well, it'd probably be "Munich Dark Malt 35L" or "hallertau hops"

and this is why I'm wondering if this site has a future

But I'm still not sure that's that interesting.

@Fishtoaster and that could be interesting, if it somehow allowed you to identify other beers with similar ingredients. But most beers don't list that on the label

Well, we could do "Where can I get DF120 near Sacramento" type questions. They are at least answerable.
Indeed
I suppose we could just declare "regional and brewery-specific questions are fair game, but no opinion-based ones" and see what people come up with.

@Fishtoaster That's where I land.

7:52 PM
Brewery drama could produce a few questions: "Why isn't X shipping to the east coast anymore?" "What caused the shortage of Y", etc.

Q: Why is beer regulated differently than other types of alcohol?

crownjewel82In the US there are tons of rules about alcohol that vary widely from state to state and at the federal level. For example you can brew your own beer in most states but you have to have a license for liquor. Similarly, wine tastings are usually OK but beer tastings are illegal in many places. I'...

Q: What kind of beer should I use when making beer & brats?

crownjewel82Making beer & brats involves boiling bratwurst & sliced onions in beer and finishing the brats on the grill. What's a good beer to use to cook with and then drink with the brats once they're done?

8:57 PM
btw on TN's strange booze laws that we were talking about yesterday, apparently the TN senate passed a wine in grocery stores legislation yesterday

Nice.
I was extremely excited when I moved from NY (only beer in grocery stores) to California (all alcohol in grocery stores). It was just so freaking convenient. :)

@Fishtoaster srsly. We've been trending towards lighter restrictions here. a couple of local GA counties finally legalized beer/wine sales on Sundays.
and our closest TN county has had that since I've been drinking age

My friends from PA had it the worst, though: State run liquor and beer stores.

9:40 PM
@RyanKinal - I agree with @waxeagle that because it is objectively answerable (though the market studies might be hard to find), it's a good question. I'd wonder the same if someone said that, and although sentiments on styles of beer may be opinion-based, facts about (public) sentiments on styles of beer are most definitely not, so I disagree with those voting to close it as opinion-based.
Woops. I didn't realize I was scrolled way up in the chat, haha. Replied to a really old chat.

@acheong87 works better if you use the reply function if you do that

Yeah, unfortunately, I didn't notice my scrollbar, and it looked like I was replying to the last message.

@acheong87 gotcha :)

9:57 PM
@Fishtoaster - Nice question—surprised no one thought of that yet.

Not gonna lie, I looked for question ideas by typing "why does beer" into google and seeing what it autocompleted. :)

Nice technique, still hehe.
Tempted to answer it but I think we need to give lower rep users more chances to participate, so I'll hold off.
A few hours at least ;-)

Seems like a good idea
Heh
Crap; looks like it may be a dupe of beer.stackexchange.com/questions/16/…

Q: Why does beer dehydrate you?

FishtoasterIt's often recommended that you drink water before and during a heavy drinking session. Why is it that, despite being mostly water, beer dehydrates you?

Ah. Still it's a better wording for the question. I almost feel like the old one should be closed in favor of yours.
Also, just, I'd rather see your title on Google results than that one.

10:08 PM
Well, if it's closed as a duplicate, it'll still show up in the googles, but with a prominent link to the existing answer.

Ah

10:51 PM
I'm pretty excited. sfbeerweek.org is coming up in San Francisco. :)

ooh exciting

Q: How do I get good layer seperation for a Shock Top Choc-top?

wax eagleI bought a 6 pack of Shock Top last night and is suggests on the package to make a drink they are calling a "Choc-Top." The pack comes with 3 Belgian Wheat normal Shock Tops and 3 Chocolate Wheat beers. I've looked around online and seen a bunch of pictures of nicely layered beverages. How do I ...
