@Wolff understood Wolff. Drawing dsnt matter, scaling is.
@Scott Oh gawwd, You can explain sooo easily. I will nvr have any problem with this anymore.

16 hours later…
9:35 PM
ooo new question page threw me....
is this a permanent change or an error?

I think it's perm

@Scott I don't like the new look 😭
I can live with the question page, but the profile page ...
Seems there have been a lively discussion on meta about this.
I feel like my desktop turned into a mobile.

1 hour later…
11:06 PM
Thnx @WELZ -- It does "feel" a lot more like a mobile version than a desktop version. I can adjust though. Biggest missing issue for me is the tag highlighting. I don't like that being gone.

@Scott Biggest issue for me is how everything in the profile takes up 4 times as much space.

profile pages look the same here @Wolff

@Scott what?

Yeah. I see no changes there.. they DID change a month or two ago.. maybe your cahce just cleared? :)

@Scott Yes, that's the change I'm talking about
They just redid the front page to fit

11:13 PM
ahh okay.. I can see that being an issue for some. Doesn't bother me. I did prefer the old layouts though.
Note I ONLY use desktop.. never view SE on mobile.. cuz.. I'm mobile :)

@Scott I sometimes went back to see how questions I commented on were doing. Now the list is too chunky.

@Wolff absolutely agree. Finding things is much more cumbersome

@Scott I prefer desktop, but view it on mobile too sometimes. The new design is better than on desktop, but less posts fit in the screen now.
It's not really an "experience site". I would rather have it compact to have a better overview.

tag highlighting seems to be a bug under review

@Scott not sure what you mean

11:17 PM
I get zero tag highlights now.. everything is the same white.. no more pee yellow backgrounds

@Scott Ah haha never noticed that. What did a yellow background signify?

Yellow background for tags on your favorites list
Easier to ignore things you don't care about without actually ignoring tags

@Scott Ah "watched" tags? I don't watch any tag actually. Relatively few questions every day, so I just look at them all.

yeah it may be watched tags :)
I don't like ignoring tags cuz it hides them... I'd prefer to just highlight watched tags.

I see. I never really customized in that respect.

11:26 PM
well I really can't answer gimp/inkscape/scribus stuff.. but I still like to see the questions to know what's typical for those apps. So the yellow helps designate them as secondary.. things I probably can't help with by may be interesting.

@Scott Sure. I even installed them just to try things out mentioned in answers. But I feel veeery handicapped in such exotic UIs.

:)

Especially gimp. Just clicking around with no success.

yeah I won't install them.. wont' risk the conflicts.. Inkscape is kind of a nightmare on the Mac.. at least it was last time I tried... wont' try again

I think those two are especially cumbersome to use compared to other free graphic software.

11:28 PM
Scribus.. well I ain't paying for it :)

I'm really a noob at Blender, but it seems logical enough. Just dense.
Scribus ... gave up on that after 10 minutes. Too many key features missing. Could as well use Word.
I have spent some time understanding FontForge because I had something I wanted to do. But it's also very chunky to use when you are used to Adobe software. And I suspect real font design programs are way better.
Just very expensive for hobby use.
@Scott Your Adobe subscription might get envious and end up with a depression.

I have used FontLab in the past (like 10+ years ago) it was really intuitive and worked great with Illustrator.. just copy/paste then tweak as needed.
TransType was pretty good as well.. but just used the Demo.
I have a hard time paying $1k+ for something I need once or twice a year, if that.

@Scott Fontlab looks so nice. But $459 is too much for just one hobby among others. Perhaps if I had an idea I really believed in.
@Scott You get a bit used to the relatively low prices for popular software like Adobe's. When you buy/rent more specialized software it's way more expensive.
Our software for imposition (which also rasterizes and sends the data to the ctp machine) costs around 450-600 USD per month (can't remember the exact amount).

Well Adobe used to be $1200... $800 upgrades which you could skip and do every 2/3 years... now it's just $600 for everything.. and next year another $600.. and on and on.... I HATE the subscription.. just hate it.

@Scott You perhaps remember we agree on that. 😀

11:39 PM
I dont' mind paying more for a perpetual license

I'm against many of the subscriptions we are forced to have.
I'm still so old-fashioned that I like the "you buy it, you own it" model.

Pre-subscription... adobe valued each customer at $30 a month... but they had no idea how many customers they had... post-subscription Adobe values each customer at $40 per month and they now know how many subscribers they have.
I can see how it makes business sense..
BUT.. there really should be an exit strategy for subscribers so they aren't locked out of copyrighted works. That's really my primary issue.

Also because I worry about future generations. If all culture (music, movies, books, games etc.) is on subscription, there is a risk that what you like might get removed. Because it's not popular enough, censorship, copyright trouble whatever. You can't keep it like we are used to owning the books on our shelf.
@Scott It's scary.

exactly... I used to buy an upgrade.. it had critical bugs.. I could go back to the old version easily an used that until they fixed the upgrade.
While that's till somewhat possible.. it's waaaaayyyy more trouble.
And I've yet to see ANY feature in 5 years that woudl warrant an upgrading in the old perpetual upgrade model.

@Scott What happens when Adobe goes down one day? Perhaps in a far future, but loosing all old design documents in one go would be a loss for culture.

11:45 PM
I have CS6 :) I've actually got an extra unopened box of the CS6 master collection that's never been registered

@Scott But perhaps you'll need to run it on a sandboxed machine so Adobe don't spot you.

My big issue.. what if I can't register it? What if Adobe gets hacked and I can't log in to use a subscription?
No. it's legal

@Scott Yes, but they decide if they want to break it.

Beta testing gift back when they actually cared about beta testers.

Since you have to have online contact with them to activate

11:47 PM
Well I imagine it goes the route of CS4... although it needed online registration, then shut that down.

@Scott Or, like I believe it happened at least once, the united states sanctions your country and Adobe are forced to lock you out of your subscription?

yeah.. but the US ain't gunna sanction the US :)
But I can see that for other countries

@Scott Haha, the rest of the world

It's just bad business for consumers.. but.. well.. no one seems to care

@Scott Well, the non-whiny way would be to make a better alternative. 🙄

11:50 PM
I can't create these apps :)
The best solution would be a mix... subscription fee with a buyout option.

@Scott But wouldn't that seem unfair to subscribers? If they end up paying for 20 years and you bought out early? Hard to balance.

If I could pay an additional 500-600 to have a perpetually licensed version of CC 2020 at the end of year's subscription, that would work.
Adobe gets their year of subscription.. I'm not locked out of my files... but I no longer receive any updates either.
I can't run CC2022 on my system... but I pay the same price as if I could
That's a rip off. Best I can do is CC2017... but I pay the same as those running CC2022

@Scott I agree. But the future of software seems to be that there are no "versions" as such. Just a club you can become member of.

I called Adobe last time my subscription was up for renewal.. you'd think I was speaking klingon to the phone reps when I asked of there was a discount because I can't run anything past CC2017. They kept wanting to transfer me to tech support

@Scott Haha. They don't understand such haggling.

11:56 PM
They were REALLy dense on the matter and regardless how I tried to explain it, they seemingly refused to understand

Our company has a backup solution provided by our insurance company. That way they will cover our downtime in the case of a file server breakdown. Nice and simple deal. But now they change to another provider and the new software could just barely run on the Mac we use. So next version we will probably have to buy a new Mac. Dictated by the software.

I'm struggling with hardware actually.. It's time I upgraded my system.. but I just can't spare the extra $3-$6k it'll take after the past couple years.
I had to update my OS because on Sept 30 2021 at 7am... a web certificate expired and was NOT going to be replaced for older operating systems.

@Scott We have to upgrade here and there as needed. The desktops for designing has highest priority.

Only way I could continue to use many web sites (including SE) was to upgrade the OS
I hate upgrading the OS.. There are NEVER any features I need and it simply creates headaches.

@Scott Maybe we experienced that as well? There was this update that broke Mail on an older Mac we used for office work so we had to upgrade.
