hey @JohnB
how's the D&D going?

Hi! It's going really well actually, we've had sessions 3 weekends in a row now! Taking a break this weekend

oh wow! Jealous!

Had my first TPK last session, but I saved them with some plot armor. But then a PC died for realzies in the next encounter :O
Any advice on how to bring in the next character they roll? As in should they have the same amount of experience as every other character? I feel like there should be some penalty for dying, but also being level(s) behind everyone else seems kinda not fun.
cc @Ryan if he's lurking about
My initial thinking was for his new character to be the same level (3) as everyone else but to start with no extra XP, so 900 XP. But I think everyone else is at about 2,000 now, so that penalty seems a little harsh. It's a short campaign, I imagine only 3 or 4 more sessions

@JohnB I'd bring them in with exactly the amount of experience needed for their level
or maybe just under that, so they are a level behind, but only for that session
ah yeah for a short campaign like that it should be a bit more lenient
make it so that they don't level when the rest do, but just one session later

2:46 PM
hmm, I like that idea of a level behind just for one session. I think I can reasonably calculate how much XP everyone will get next session so that everyone will level up during the session but he will have to wait until next

death is a slap on the wrist in D&D anyway, but this way you make them actually feel it ;)

:D
they definitely deserved the TPK, they tripped an alarm at the Goblin HQ and decided to immediately blow signal whistles and make as much noise as possible. But that was my one freebie plot armor save, PCs are gonna die from here on out :P
How are you @Vincent? What are you playing these days?

Bit busy at the moment, in anticipation of an extended trip to Japan

Oh wow, when are you going?

Friday :D

2:51 PM
Cool! What part of Japan?

And our D&D will have another session next month, has been going strong pretty much with a session every two to three months for about two years now
but we will hve a little hiatus as one participating couple is going to roll up two more new characters pretty soon. Of the crying and pooping kind

Two :O Congrats to them :)
and good luck haha

a bit center. We're going to travel around central Honshu and Northern Shikoku
but first almost a week of Tokyo :D

hello. I come from hard knox where when you die you die

Wow that's going to be great. Will this be your first time visiting Japan?

2:53 PM
why am I not surprised :)
Oh no, this will be my third visit :)
@Ryan Start over from lv 1?

@Vincent sure
to be fair its not really that different from what you all are suggesting. you just don't realize it

harsh ':)

lets say because of the difficult of encounters the players are now earning 1,500 xp a session.

ah yeah
I see what you mean. XP inflation

2:55 PM
In one session your higher levels might be halfway closer to leveling while you're level 1 would skip right to level 3
they just have to you know.. survive that session

Under 3.5 rules you are limited to a single level-up per session
and your XP is then capped to reaching the next level-up minus one XP

ah ok
well just popping in for the pings. I need to get going. On a business trip and have a meeting soon

Take care!

g'luck!
@JohnB you're playing 5E as well, right?

Yep
I think I've finally got a good feel for things as far as what tools and resources I want to use for DMing, looking forward to next session as I think I'll be the most prepared for it

3:00 PM
cool :) Playin' god of your own world

This is my favorite resource so far: themonstersknow.com
It's overwhelming knowing how to run combat for so many different monsters, those writeups on good strategies for each is fantastic. Definitely doing to purchase a copy of their book when it's released

3:15 PM
That looks awesome

Hey all :) I'll make a meta post eventually but I wanted to get this topic started
With all the hard work that is being put answering tutorial questions, I find it disheartening that a lot of the questions are often titled in a super non-descriptive way
So I asked the SEDE folks in chat and rene made this query that finds anything including "make this effect" et al.
It's a small step to finding these questions and editing them, we'd obviously need to add other possibilities (e.g. create this effect, look, etc.)
