Q: Would my question about pdf rendering quality be on-topic for GD.se?

A. DondaI asked the question Why does transparency disable subpixel rendering in Adobe Reader? on superuser.com. Because I haven't gotten any answers or even comments there, and because I see technical issues are being discussed on GD.se, too, I asked a moderator to move my post there. He doubted whether...

wow.. just wow.. I want to rant on this.. answers.onstartups.com/questions/10331/…

"Hi, I want everything pretty much for free. Where could I get that?"
-Well there are these farms that gullible people will all compete to...please you.
"GREATO! That's exactly the information I needed, some more people farming options', thanks"
Hey Matt, feel free to rant. That's pretty much the impression I got from it :)

OnStartups is shutting down so rant while you can

Why is it shutting down?

not enough action
no no... j/k I dont like it anymore so I am closing the stack site...

Q: Answers OnStartups Will Close On November 12, 2013

Tim PostAnswers OnStartups has been in public beta for a little over three years, and is doing rather well when it comes to overall traffic, question volume and answer rate. What sets this site apart from the rest is something quite unique: it's changed hands, or rather changed communities over the cours...

6:02 PM
that may happen to GD if some items dont change..

Fair reasons I suppose. That can't happen to GD, I've essentially just joined and I love it! It would be like taking sweets from a child!

what items?

@JennaDesign ya but over a large amount of time the same questions, beginner wise, appear to only happen, the adobe questions get old.. and it turns into an Adobe How To site instead of design related..
blasted this coding 100% issue is driving me nuts

SE isn't going to shut down a site that gets 25K visits per day just because the questions are beginner oriented

no it will go into a read only mode =P

6:08 PM
Just wait for people to get confused by the next design trend then the questions will freshen up - flat design can't reign forever. Perhaps police beginner questions a little, like if they have a number of key words that match older questions you have to check each of the older ones as not a duplicate of yours. Then if it's marked as a duplicate you lose rep.

but I do miss a lot of the people that were here.

there was a strong attempt to broaden the scope which would have meant more non-adobe questions

As a beginner though your read only mode mightn't be entirely wrong @Matt_2.0 Ihaven't asked a question because anything I;ve been stumped on sofar has been answered before

SE declined it, so they seem to be quite happy with the site's scope

@JohnB I tried.. I really did.. I wanted to discuss about bringing our printing questions here

6:10 PM
I would disagree that technical printing questions should fit here. However, other Art questions I think would work

@JennaDesign and thats great you look but we get, what appears, a ton of people that have not attempt to accomplish or respect the board but just want their work completed
@JohnB I do agree with that and thought some re-wording would be needed.

Punish them, punish them all!

@JennaDesign but i try to be a nice guy >=)

A: Do you want to rename the site to "Art & Design"?

AarthiWe talked this over pretty thoroughly internally, and we feel there are a couple important things to point out here: We feel the addition of "& Art" is misleading. This site, for all its strengths, is not and never was meant to be about sculpture, crochet, or tile mosaics. Is it about elements ...

this was never addressed, and might be worth considering:
> know you all feel strongly about this, so I would like to propose an alternative: instead of adding words to your site title, remove the word "graphic” from your site name.

@JohnB do you have a link for everything? Seriously you're like the link master! I think calling it art and design is a bad idea though. The questions should be related to design/design issues regardless of the medium used to achieve the design. Calling it art and design might confuse that more and make it feel more arts & craftsy?

6:13 PM
> If this is something you all consider worth pursuing, start a new meta post and make your arguments and position(s) just as clear as you did here.

sorry, off topic, but I dont want to ask that question on stack.. any soloutions John?

@JennaDesign What about just "Design" like Aarthi proposes?

@Matt_2.0 you are a nice guy. But if somebody needs to be steered in the right direction it's good for them. I do think my earlier policing posts for people with little rep like me is a good idea. If each time I went to ask a question the site gave me similar questions I'd be o with that

(for some context, Aarthi was our previous community manager for the site, i.e. the employee for Stack Exchange that kept an eye on us)

@JennaDesign thanks but I sometimes feel I am not liked here because I try to be more teaching and holding OP's accountable. Plus I dont, personally, see issues with pointing things out regardless of how it would make someone feel because I have been around the small mom and pop shops and you tend to just say it how it is.. still working on comminication

6:20 PM
@JohnB maybe but then we would need to define what exactly falls under 'design' which could really put a spanner in the works in terms of distinguishing if questions are relevant to the board. Would it be too broad to have art and design under the same header too...maybe digital design? Slightly widens the scope?
@Matt_2.0 Your communication is fine people are just used to being mollycoddled in todays society and can't handle acknowledging that they're wrong. It's not you who's disliked it's people not appreciating being called out on their mistakes. Which is actually kind of funny because the reason they would be on this is to learn, learning sometimes means understanding that you are wrong so that you can move forward. Perhaps people on't consider that.

I'd be against Digital Design, that kinda just re-enforces the "Adobe" scope. There's nothing really stopping anyone from currently posting non-digital questions. You're right though, "Design" is extremely broad. It could lead to questions from all over the board such as "I'm designing a new type of mug, what's the best diameter to use?" or something silly like that :)

um.. speaking of which

Q: Problem with logo design: doesn't scale down well

SueI need some advice/opinions on the attached logo and what my designer should have done to make it scaleable. It looks fine at high resolution and zoomed in over 400% in AI, but at 100% and less the speech bubble is pixelated and loses definition. Here on the test site for example it looks like...

@JohnB good point. I guess it's more of an issue with terminology than anything though graphic doesn't seem to deter people with non digital issues as is so maybe it is just right?
Maybe we're thinking too much :)

It would be pretty cool to graph all the tags and categorize them
wonder if there's some tool that would make that easy

6:37 PM
if been working on adding more tags to lower tag questions

More tags is good, I support more tags

get on it, lol
I think we need to petition a better display when asking questions.. maybe a check list that asks you questions and you have to select yes or no..
meta post idea
AND.. im going home early.

@Matt_2.0 slacker :P

ya I wish.. we have a very bad and deadly ice storm heading this way and it hasnt stopped raining for 30 hours about.
temp dropped so far from 70 to 40 in 24 hours

:O and I thought I was from the land over never-ending rain, get home safe lad!

6:52 PM
thats the worst about living here.. weather channel is NEVER right and every two weeks you get different seasons

I'm not sure I could handle that! I'm off now for while too. Talk tyas later :) home safe!

Q: Is it possible to add more form requirements when asking questions?

Matt_2.0I was curious to know if we could possibly add some form radio buttons that can possibly ask a question and provide the option of yes or no such as: Does your question show your work of what you have tried and where you are having issues? If the user chooses NO then possibly display a message of...

7:14 PM
those would be checkboxes, not radio buttons

ya, true..
thought about that but I was too busy educating on this: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/25339/…
@JohnB I got the nas running
last night

awesome :) How's freenas?

nice, really like it. going to run some new cat6 crossovers when I get home.. re-wiring the servers and should be, almost, up and running
this weekend will address VPN
is it me or does that question in regards to this doesnt work: dev.inside-guides.co.uk/brentwood/pages/index.html

does that question doesn't work?
wat

7:30 PM
sorry red-bull stutter
the logo looks horrible on that website

It's not even the right color, or one of them isn't the right color
something odd is up
those are not the same orange

sorry cant tell from the over powering stroke

I can tell right away

plus I think the stroke is effecting the orange
that was sarcasicm

I don't think the stroke should affect the orange

7:33 PM
you ever try the trick of blurring your vision when looking at a logo to tell if its readable?

big orange: #ea592d
small orange: #d14724

I think sue is educating you on Illustrator, lol

I agree it's valid, but she didn't mention PS in the question at all
I'm wondering how this was scaled and why the colors changed

well the design is flawed first.
a huge stroke like that is horrible in a design

there are quite a few things I would change but that's not what she is asking

7:37 PM
especially if it is intended to be scaled small..
shouldnt it be addressed since she is questioning the quality when it is reduced?
think I might delete my answer

she's ultimately asking about the speech bubble
> is the speech bubble colour and definition shown in the larger version something that could likely be achieved at the size we need it for the header, approx. 200px?

but yet she is also linking everything, including the logo

I would definitely reduce the shadow and remove some of the stroke to create a scaled down version

and she mentions that there are two different logos they use?
one for smaller sizes? Thats design 101 no?

I'm not sure what it is that you're pointing out by that

7:43 PM
I think its frustrating me she is focusing on the scalability of the icon but doesnt address or want to do anything with everything that is wrong..
My point is its like bringing in a clunker that the motor is on its last leg but you want to give it a paint job because it will be better for the car than fading clear coat..

So what? If she's happy with the logo, then she's happy with it. She's looking for advice so that it scales well. There are two issues with the scaled down logo: it's a darker orange (for some unknown reason), and the speech bubble looks terrible
I remove the stroke on the speech bubble, and take down the depth of the shadow on the whole logo. And I'd fix the orange color

well my apologies =P I feel that if you are going to address one flaw why not bring the whole party, lol. I just dont see logic in addressing one area without looking at everything that would effect that small area

^ In order to create a scaled down version, not to make those changes permanent to the logo

wonder what @scott thinks about all this

I'm not dismissing your points, I think they're valid. But if she wants input on the whole logo and not just the speech bubble, then she should change the quesiton

7:49 PM
sorry a little confused on how to take the point she linked her logo not once but thre times?? She even attached it as a pic.. so what is the purpose of the logo being included then?

and I just realized she wouldn't have access to chat anyway
oops

i thought if a mod invited them they would?

well I don't know how to invite
@iklsr help!
@Matt_2.0 the speech bubble is in the logo

8:12 PM
@JohnB hmm?
Just give the user the link to chat, once they are here, give them write/read privilege.
@JohnB You can't ping someone who hasn't been to chat

Q: Influx of Spam edits

ckpepper02Has anyone else noticed an influx in SPAMMY edit suggestions? I've just declined 2, one of which took me a while to realize it was indeed spam. Both came from anonymous users. Obviously we need to stay on top of our edits, but is there anything we can do to limit this, say for instance not allow...

@sue you should be able to talk here now after lots of "doing things wrong" on my part :)
@iKlsR This works, I was just doing it wrong :P meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/114296/…
(just FYI for the future)

8:56 PM
good grief, Egnyte is possibly the worst file sharing thing I've ever used, especially for GD work
client is sending me print ready files, and this software only allows me to downloads 1024MB at a time. I have well over 1024MB to download
so I have to select a set of files that doesn't exceed 1024MB, download that, rinse and repeat until done :|
all at a whopping 100ish KB/s speed

9:38 PM
...seemed like two different blues in that logo to me too. Good lord @JohnB sounds like you could do with a 'queue to download' option, that is not cool!

Yeah. Wish they'd use FTP, or even just ask me to set up an FTP account for them on our hosting
Just gonna bite the bullet this time but mention it to them for future transferring

Sounds like the thing to do :)

I estimate there is about 6GB to download, this is gonna take a while

can you at least get something else done while it's downloading?

yeah, working un-complicating a needlessly complicated invoice right now
I do not work well with numbers D:

9:47 PM
:D complicated invoices, the work of the devil! When I started working this past summer I had to follow up on anything that hadn't been paid and find all the old invoices. The company hadn't gotten an accounts package yet so it was doom! I was delighted to move on to designing for fussy brides!

10:13 PM
it just got more complicated
wonderful!
nevermind, de-complicated it I think

Just so you know, resorting to banging your head against the wall probably won't help ;)

1 hour later…
11:31 PM
@Matt_2.0 Horrible colors - they are all similar in value, and in general that log is designed for one size. My guess.... 99¢Designs.
