@lnafziger no idea, it fetches the latest available data
@voretaq7 mentioned it takes a few minutes for them to receive their data?

Idk... complain to ADDS?
not sure there's much we can do about it

haha, odd. I figured they would all be standardized and come from the FAA. Guess not. :-)

I also can't find anything about retrieving SPECIs

They don't specify that it's a SPECI though

looks like these are the available params: aviationweather.gov/adds/dataserver/SummaryOfConstraints.php
@lnafziger they do, in metar_type

I meant that fltplan doesn't specify (look at my last group)

metar_type
METAR or SPECI
string
oh sorry
I'm gonna assume that the only reason it's not showing a SPECI is because of whatever's causing the delay issue
because the params are configured ok, and there's no mention of that constraint on the ADDS site

3:46 AM
Well, it isn't a delay.. The times that they have for their's don't even appear at the other sites. It must be coming from a different source.

oh

bizarre really

clearly says ICAO, not IATA... looking into it

Well, you are putting KMMV into ICAO, right?
(not MMV?)
The "K" is ICAO

checking that now
checking the PHP now
no shit. the data is mixed up at the source
$codes = explode(' ', $data);
$this->iata = $codes[0];
$this->icao = $codes[1];
the example I took that from had LPL EGGP as the input format
it would seem Our Airports is listing it as KMMV MMV
(back to front)
I can throw an extra sanity check in there
to correct their mistake :)
@lnafziger

3:57 AM
haha, okay, nice

changed it to:
$codes = explode(' ', $data);

for($i = 0; $i < 2; $i++)
{
	if(strlen($codes[$i]) === 3)
	{
		$this->iata = $codes[$i];
	}

	else if(strlen($codes[$i]) === 4)

		$this->icao = $codes[1];
	}
}

Alright, good job Danny!
Nap time for me, talk to you tomorrow.

thanks Louis! night man
@BretCopeland Are you able to check the max length of a message ID in chat?
13080983 = 8, currently

@DannyBeckett it's just an integer that increments for every single message sent in any room on chat.stackexchange.com

sure, but do you know what it's defined as in the database?
i.e. INT(10)

I'm sure it's a normal 32-bit integer.

databases are very specific, as to the length of their fields

4:19 AM
@DannyBeckett we use int32 for essentially all of our Id fields, I doubt this is different, but I could look if you really want me to.
It's going to stay at 8 (decimal characters) for quite a while. If you want to be safe, say 9, and that will probably work for many many years.

It's just that database columns are defined with a preset max length:
I'm being pedantic, I can just use 10 and be done, like you say
actually, I can probably get this info myself
since the dumps are out there
I have a dump on my machine too as it happens

@DannyBeckett integers are in byte size, not really length

ah wait, chat's not gonna be in there

It's a 32-bit integer, like I said.

In C# it will be, but I don't think in the db
it's ok man, this is wasting your time

4:25 AM
@DannyBeckett the int type in SQL Server defaults to 32-bits (4 bytes)

I'm seeing something like that on MSDN - ok thanks!

"MsSQL doesn't support length in Integer Type - Cannot specify a column width on data type int" drupal.org/node/1801478
It's a Microsoft thing :)
Oracle/MSSQL/all other RDBMS's take a char length

The int type is a specific byte size. There are other sized integer types though.

yeah exactly
unlike on other platforms
my mistake
thanks again
output.length < 500 changed to output.length + ':1234567890 '.length < 500

4:32 AM
Hola. Can I run a local instance of the bot to test against or does it require an SE chat channel?

@DannyBeckett what about just not using direct-reply, like others have suggested. I assume the bot has a mode where it just posts without replying to anyone.

@BretCopeland it does (send), but I believe all the other commands have been built using directreply
there was a discussion about this a couple of days ago as well
I believe the decision was to leave it
either way, it's not the direct reply that's putting it over the limit
it's just the source of not knowing it's over the limit
i.e. I'll soon be adding gust info etc, which is also gonna be more
I think it's ok
@SteveV. hey, you can run it locally in your browser, but you need 1) a seperate login, or 2) to disable some setting in the code - look for dev mode, ignore-self, or something... I went for option #1
you can just create a new room to test in

okay, so register a new login, feed it to the bot, and then spawn a channel to play in? That's all there is to it?

and get 20 rep
but yep! :)

@DannyBeckett a suggestion for trimming it slightly would be to get rid of redundant "clouds". You could say Sky (AGL): Scattered clouds @ 700ft; Broken @ 800ft instead of using the word clouds on every layer.

4:39 AM
I can remove the word 'clouds' entirely?
here's the dictionary
return {
	SKC:	'Clear',
	CLR:	'Clear',
	CAVOK:	'Ceiling & visibility ok',
	FEW:	'Few clouds',
	SCT:	'Scattered clouds',
	BKN:	'Broken clouds',
	OVC:	'Overcast',
	OVX:	'Obscured'
}[abbreviation];

Alright, cool. I ask because I'm interested in contributing in principle, but I don't want my pull requests to be crap, and JS isn't my first language. Thanks.

@DannyBeckett I think you could, but might ask in the other room.

you can
Scattered implies "clouds" to pilots.
There's nothing else that follows those terms.

@SteveV. agreed

I agree too
Will run it past the other room, then do that
@SteveV. Let me know if you run into any issues, I'll try to help

4:42 AM
bah, you don't need to run it past the room. code impulsively and apologize later!

:O
was just gonna say, that's >1,000 chars
hahaha, nice

I noticed that was a check in the code, and wondered if it worked... apparently it does.
@DannyBeckett Literally all it requires is a single \r or \n in the string. However, it can't start or end with one, because that will get trimmed off before the check.

do you know if a \r on it's own is ignored anyway?
(without a proceeding \n)

@DannyBeckett not sure, you'd have to try it.

I.e. I could stick it straight after the URL
will do!

No, it's not gonna work. The reason one line works is because it's trimming off the trailing new line.

you're right

5:40 AM
@DannyBeckett if you use the GPO pubs it will - some parts of 14CFR are "SFARs" (Special Federal Air Regulations)

@voretaq7 Probably depends on where the bot pulls the reg from. rgl.faa.gov would have the SFARs, i believe. Wonder if they're in the same format.

Yeah, looking at the code, the rendering goes through a separate process if it's multiline.

if you guys can figure out what source we should use, that would be great

@SteveV. generally yeah. They are on the ECFR site

I don't really know what I'm looking for

seems the only remaining solution, other than splitting
