Its a fair question, boiling down to "why did windows 8 have such a weird start menu and why did it go away, not continuing to win10?" And one answer would be "Touchscreens and Windows didn't turn out to be as big as anticipated so a big-button interface wasn't really needed, and mobile OSs were used in most touch-based devices, not Windows"
