12:11 AM
@CanadianLuke their free plans do more than just DNS proxy I think - only on poer 80 and 443
so I'm doing that for everything but one service that needs a different port
Journeyman Geek
12:31 AM
also part of the goal here is to save money soooo :D
Criggie
If you want to save the most money.... stop doing that thing
Journeyman Geek
@Criggie lol.
@Criggie Most of those services are stuff I use myself :D
Criggie
ARM/Gravitons are way cheaper to run than intel, btw
Journeyman Geek
@Criggie I'm literally running this on a small NUC on my house
paying for internet already, power is essentially 'free' to a point
and it was hardware I already had
Criggie
yep - same here. I have an old SAN that eats the most power
Trying to find a way to move all that data "offline"
without burning DVDs
Journeyman Geek
12:36 AM
so I went from paying ~80 dollars a month to ~45
Criggie
USB hard drives aren't ideal but might be a better option
Journeyman Geek
@Criggie in theory...
you could get a dock, a single
large
drive and just... do it
then transfer it to a lower power system
Criggie
hang on... (checking)
Journeyman Geek
(or a pair)
vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005001862295981.html
I was running a pair of 14tb drives on one of these
Criggie
huh I'm using less data than I thought.
10 TB in use, out of 22 TB allocated, with another 29 TB unallocated.
@JourneymanGeek Some sort of USB - sata dock thing ? For some reason, work is now filtering harder on our guest wireless network, so AE won't load
I see - yes I have something like that already, USB3 and takes two x 2.5 or 3.5" drives like a toaster
Journeyman Geek
12:47 AM
yup
Criggie
Just don't have the drives.
Journeyman Geek
how big are your individual drives?
also sata or SAS?
Criggie
1:04 AM
I have 24x 3.7 TB 3.5" SAS drives, and 20x 1.8 TB 2.5" SAS and 4x 400GB SSD SAS, all in the SAN
hence why I grabbed it from the dump
and its all 10 Gbit iscsi too
Journeyman Geek
ow
yeaaah, consolidation would make sense
Criggie
yeah - I grabbed everything useful that I could
there were 3 metre offcuts of I-beam I couldn't move sadly - they would have made a bomb-proof workbench
Journeyman Geek
lol
I mean, free hardware aside
Criggie
yeah - its not just for me either. I handed a lot of other things to other people
I have no use for a dozen mac minis from 2014, 200 i5 machines of the 6-7-8 gen, etc etc
Journeyman Geek
lol
wait
200?
Criggie
1:08 AM
And giving away stuff is pre-buying favours some other day.
Yeah ,... about 230 of them in the end
Journeyman Geek
lol, and geneerally a good thing to do

Criggie
no hard drives, but 8/16 GB ram
My current employer issued me a new laptop ~4 weeks ago, then 2 weeks ago said we're all redundant at End of year
Journeyman Geek
ow
Criggie
employer has no process to wipe a mac so it will be crushed
Journeyman Geek
.....
Criggie
1:10 AM
apple say "delete the encryption key and the disk is irrecoverable"
employer's IT department don't accept that
So off to the shredder with ~40x M3 macbook pro and 100x dell something equivalent laptops
Journeyman Geek
Are they being made redundant too?
owww
Criggie
corporate is just another work for wastage
yeah ~130 people all at once, then the company gets wound up in New Zealand
The US mother ship sails onward.
no matter - enough of my whinging
though.,... I wonder if I should fold my laptop in half before returning ?
