MiG
12:37 AM
@Michael heh
I gave up after 4.4km... those octopi are annoying

1:32 AM
I hate to be that person, but...
It's octopuses, not octopi.

@forest octopodes!
@forest no you don't

@JourneymanGeek Yeah you're right. :^)

2:35 AM
Tried duckduckgoing but couldn't find an answer and I'm not sure if I should ask on the site so I'm asking it here: Why is it that when I use curl or navigate to localhost:8000 in a browser, the request uses HTTP 1.1 and not HTTP 2? AFAIK, HTTP 2 is pretty well-supported by most browsers. I'm guessing it's for compatibility, in which case, do browsers automatically "upgrade" a known site to HTTP 2 if available? If yes, when and how?

2:56 AM
@ChocolateOverflow Not all versions of curl on all distros use HTTP/2 by default.
3.2. Starting HTTP/2 for "http" URIs

A client that makes a request for an "http" URI without prior
knowledge about support for HTTP/2 on the next hop uses the HTTP
Upgrade mechanism (Section 6.7 of [RFC7230]). The client does so by
making an HTTP/1.1 request that includes an Upgrade header field with
the "h2c" token. Such an HTTP/1.1 request MUST include exactly one
   HTTP2-Settings (Section 3.2.1) header field.

   For example:

     GET / HTTP/1.1
     Host: server.example.com

5 hours later…
8:16 AM
lol

MiG
:D

I just woke up and asked a dumb question
well a possibly dumb question

MiG
oohh, do tell!

I asked why a browser would do that

MiG
would do what?

8:17 AM
tho, half asleep I confused HTTP2 and HTTPS

MiG
ah

and then decided I had no idea what I was talking about

MiG
hehe
I can relate... continued until like 3AM last night, woke up together with gf a little after 7 so feeling a bit strange atm
was configuring raspberry pi, don't think I should continue that right now or there'll be funny mistakes
so doing physical stuff, cleaning kitchen and putting up some shelves in closet
and read some stuff in between

lol
We had a deployment yesterday so nooooooooooooo sleep during my shift, not even naps
do got home, had brunch (dad cooked lunch early to save time) them slept checks a good 6 hours
Well, one week left :)
and tonight is my final night shift

MiG
@JourneymanGeek ouch :(
@JourneymanGeek slept during the day? That's gonna mess you up for the weekend :/
@JourneymanGeek celebrate tomorrow then :D
two spam accounts btw, payload on #1 already got deleted:
Bela Hazel, United States
1 1

8:26 AM
@MiG night shifts. when else does one sleep?

MiG
I know :(
umm... do drugs? (:
"Hi, Am Bela Hezal am working as seo specialist at etechtics software. Gadgets and Accessories" - so damned blatant :/
I guess "SEO" now mostly means "spam as many places as possible"
aaaaand gone, thanks <3

@MiG that sorta english sorta balances between "HI KIDS! I AM A FELLOW TEENAGER" and xkcd.com/1530
I actually find tools like that fascinating - I have what I jokingly call the cheapest screwdriver ever (a cross head that basically is a single piece of metal with a triangle folded in
the problem with sink tools is they're fiddly and most people wouldn't reach in. I literally have a short spanner cause it was the ONLY tool that made sense for a sink install.
I guess a box spanner would work but the sink install wrench (there's a specific one) wouldn't fit
also unless you have my dad, you'd use it once and forget
But you don't want it breaking either

MiG
8:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek :D
@JourneymanGeek I had no idea they now included plastic screwdrivers :/
tbh, I also have a sizeable stack of hex keys, so clearly that isn't a great idea either
@JourneymanGeek isn't the cheapest screwdriver ever a cent coin? (:

depends
@MiG ah the eternal problem
if you have the tools in the kit, you don't need to buy the tool if you don't need it
but you'll end up with spares

MiG
the problem is they also want to be as accessible as possible, so they have to include at least that one thing

One solution would be to throw in a 'kit' of what you need with every order past a certain size
but that's less efficient

MiG
Don't know about that particular type of faucet, didn't even know IKEA delivered plumming as well now? o_O

MiG
8:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek they literally already do :)

they'll do your whole kitchen
even ovens and microwaves

MiG
bought one of these for gf's place, it covers a lot of bare basics

@MiG order, not piece
and I do know their toolkits lol
they're not bad

MiG

but like if you buy say 2 tables and a chair
they throw in ONE allen key, not 3

MiG
8:48 AM
I didn't bother with their cordless screwdriver though, got some Bosch kit for here

and I don't know why you need 2 tables and a chair
lol
I have a USB charging black and decker drill I love

MiG
@JourneymanGeek they include these things per pack don't they? I haven't seen sets where the table and chairs came as one unit

if it was USB C I'd basically want the designer to get an award
@MiG yeah

MiG
hehehe

so you have spare allen keys

MiG
8:49 AM
yeah, my Ixo is still Micro-USB unfortunately

(I do stash USB C to mini b and mini 3.0 adaptors tho)

MiG
the one I have at my place is different though, comes with a cradle
I think my dad owns the oldest model, that's also Micro-USB iirc

and bleh
I need to decide at some point if I need a proper big boy drill of my own ;)

MiG
borrowing my dad's right now, parents live nearby

oh
ours is...

MiG
8:51 AM
but a decent hammer drill isn't that expensive, I think for 200 euro you get a pretty good one

terrible

MiG
heh

Imagine the cheapest, all expenses spare chinesium junk
Well no, cause the darn thing is over 20 years old

MiG
dad's is a Bosch from the early 90s that can still go through high strength concrete like butter :)

ya
and I want to DIY my curtains and some other stuff
so it'll get a fair amount of work
unless I pay someone to do it
so its a balance between tools/time and money lol

MiG
8:53 AM
worth it for you imo, I'd really hate to have call in someone every time I want to hang a picture frame on my wall
and I imagine in your new place pretty much everything will be concrete

ah wierdly no
mix of concrete and drywall

MiG
to be fair, gf has these 3M sticky patches with velcro in between that have been doing a really great job keeping three small photo frames aloft for the past 1.5 years, so there are alternatives

I do want to do in wall or floating shelves

MiG
ah, drywall is easier, you just need the right plugs, those butterfly jobbies

(but the really really nice ones I'm in love with are pricy so its a later thing)
@MiG ah so...
new apartments supposedly come with a bag of those

MiG
8:55 AM

and spare tiles

MiG
you push the two prongs together, then they form a regular plug, and when it's in, there's this little plastic stick that you push into the hole that makes them expand again - screw tightens the whole structure and makes it firm
if you plan on hanging heavy stuff (like a microwave, which I did), you'll need something to spread the load over many of these - I got a multiplex plate and screwed it with about ten of those on the drywall, and then mounted the brackets on that... that's been holding without any sagging for almost a decade now

yup
basically we get an entire bag of those
of different weights

MiG
excellent

I believe our walls are either concrete (precast) or metal studded drywall with insulation

MiG
8:59 AM
another way is to find the wooden posts that keep the drywall up and screw directly into those
ah, metal posts can also be used, but you'd need one of those self tapping (?) metal screws

There's a local company that does reclaimed, solid wood... stuff

MiG
"stuff" heh

its super expensive
table tops, planks etc
but oh so pretty

MiG
that stuff looks gorgeous yeah
a friend does these kinds of things on the side, he sanded and lacquered a slice of tree trunk to become a table

I priced out a 'small' desktop
and it was "IT COST WHAT?"

MiG
9:02 AM
:D
a lot of labour going into those, and I imagine like here labour is expensive in SG

like 500 quid. I mean, its beautiful but

MiG
if it's like a centerpiece or heavily used furniture it's worth it imo

(I might do it anyway if I can afford it, but I'll likely buy a cheap ikea jobbie first)
@MiG well, computer desk really, but I practically live at my PC

MiG
right now thanks to COVID we're mostly surrounded by IKEA stuff... And admittedly, it looks nice and the quality of at least some of them is good (like one of our chairs, and the solid wood table), but if we move places I wouldn't mind finding some nicer stuff to complement these
@JourneymanGeek then it damned better also be scratch, food and drink proof for a decade :P

@MiG heh, a lot of stuff I'd start with are likely ikea or that sorta thing ;)
@MiG eh, I consider scratches and mild damage to be beautiful on its own
its charecter, and a story

MiG
9:05 AM
Or turmeric stains :P

MiG
I'd like to avoid all of those for as long as possible :)

Oh so
I have this habit of buying nice notebooks sometimes
then like "ITS TOO PRETTY TO USE"

MiG
@JourneymanGeek if you eat at the desk, there's the risk of food that leaves stains

an object that's in use, and gets the story of the user has its own beauty ;)
Its a item of utlity, not something in a museium

MiG
9:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek I sometimes have that for a little while, and then I'm like "it's sitting there and I need something like that... Might as well use it" :)

So I'm ok with scratches

MiG
Sure, but I'd still like to keep things in good shape for as long as I can :)

I'll try to avoid coffee stains and such ;)
I'll likely throw a desk mat atop it tho

MiG
that'll help - also more comfy to rest your arms on
got one of those underneath the keyboard

amusingly tho
I'll likely end up going with ikea legs
they don't make the 'style' I wanted any more
so
even has a place to put my PC!
so 150 quid all in (2 trestle legs and a 120cm table top) , or I might go for a little drawer or legs depending on space) and I can in theory upgrade the desktop for... 600 dollars before discount 0_0)

MiG
9:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek heh, those look nice

@MiG they're sensible
actually nearly perfect other than not coming in black or some darker colour

MiG
that's the nice thing about IKEA stuff, if you don't like it as is, you can both mix & match, and also easily just put a saw into it and adapt it to suit your situation
@JourneymanGeek can easily paint them

@MiG ikea tabletops are expanded paper
they're crap to modify
or vineered particleboard

MiG
depends on the model, as mentioned we have some solid wood tables
I think the series was called Norden

all the local ones seem foldy

MiG
9:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek that's my crappy desk - I love the design (very minimalistic, and the side table can be expanded or retracted with sliders)... just the vineered particleboard is horrible
considering rebuilding that design with good wood if we move to a new place

@MiG I need 2 27 inch monitors lol

MiG
can also mount them off of the wall

MiG
keeps your desk emptier on top, easier to clean

So, I can't drill into the place I'd ideally prefer to have them

MiG
9:20 AM
you can transfer the load somewhere else

(I'm not technically allowed to drill into the bomb shelter :D)

MiG
lmao, bomb shelter

assuming its big enough

MiG
this is beginning to sound a lot like Israel :x

lol
most people use it for pantry storage

MiG
9:21 AM
although they most definitely "may or may not" have nukes

I figure if its big enough, a desk and a chair, leave the door open (or add fans to the vents) to get the AC flowing...

MiG
but blast proof rooms in every home I hear

a nice carpet, some sound treatment...

MiG
bomb shelter sounds like it might be nice and cool

If I could drill (or there was a clever no drill way to safely mount a monitor on a wall) I would

MiG
9:23 AM
steel stand I suppose

space concerns ;)

MiG
if it's that small I'd just build a wall to wall desk tbh
what kind of dimensions are we talking about here?
also keep in mind you said you pretty much live at your desk, might not want to put it in a dark room without any kind of view :x

Actually that would be fine
If I wanted a view I'd just cast it out to the TV ;)

MiG
@JourneymanGeek oh dear :D
that SO reminds me of the Fallout series :P
@JourneymanGeek that's like... 1.5m wide?

yeah
I'm guesstimating about 1.4
So basically put a desk against the 'short' side'

MiG
9:27 AM
are you thinking of putting it up on the side (so for example the upper wall on that drawing), or against the outer wall?
ah
in that case I really wouldn't go for those IKEA stands, they take away space underneath the desk

inside. Outer wall is plan B, and it would be against 'that' wall
but I'd have much more room
naw, I like the A frames

MiG
just do wall to wall, support it with wood of the same thickness as the deck

I can put my PC on one
that means actual carpentry ;)

MiG
hardly
pretty much four screws to secure it, the walls do the rest
and that gives you an absolute maximum of desk and foot space in that tiny room, which is probably desirable

I'd need to get wood cut to size ;)
in which case I might as well checks

MiG
9:29 AM
oh, can't you just order that?

uhhh not easily

MiG
if I go to a hardware store here, they saw them to size for free

and the desktop place is... ducking expensive

MiG
"ducking" :P
yeah, those motherpluckers!

also with the A frames, I can put my PC under the desk
which I should
so at LEAST 1 a frame

MiG
9:30 AM
I'd consider the snug fit alternative tbh, it will sit quite sturdily and give you maximum space
the only thing those screws do is make sure the two support planks stay in place, the deck can't move and transfers its load straight down

I also need to get it through the door ;)

MiG
diagonally

the ikea option gives me 2 things
If I mess it up I have a small dining table
if I don't I can gradually upgrade it based on what I need

MiG
it's 1.4m wide and prob... 90cm deep? that will fit through any door

going 60

MiG
9:32 AM
even easier

checks
currently based off 120x60x50mm

MiG
doors are like 80cm wide, you can literally walk straight in holding the desk surface

(yes its thick)

MiG
thick is nice, no sagging in the middle

yeah, that's something I had with particleboard in the past
with a previous A frame table

MiG
9:33 AM
you have to support those yeah, they're pretty flexible

(regrets? There was an even NICER old ikea trestle leg that's now out of production. I bought the cheaper option... )

MiG
heh
I'd save those legs for something that goes into the living room :)

my mom uses the old legs and an ikea top as a sewing table
@MiG lving room is sofa and a TV tbh

MiG
hehe

"Geek, you might have people over!"

MiG
9:35 AM
at gf's place I use an expandable regular table as a desk, it's white and looked nice in the living room... Also has sufficient space to spread my stuff around during work

I'll burn that bridge when I come to it :D

MiG
shrugs

@MiG the ikea one actually makes sense for an occational table

MiG
anything can be made to look nice, just choose good materials

lol
its a small space

MiG
9:36 AM
that's the start, the rest is organising and decorating :P

so I want to work out things as I need to
more seriously

MiG
not that much smaller than this place... that's what, 60m2?

lol
everyone's telling me
"Its tiny! Why didn't you get a bigger one!"
but I can't buy a new build (and subsidised!) unit without spending a lot more, for essentially one more room

MiG
bigger is always nice... also always adds to the bottom line
yer

If the housing board told me my flat is done today I'd think they were on drugs, or lying to me I'd be able to pay it off after saving for about 4-5 years
I'd be on the hock for 10-20 for a bigger flat

MiG
9:40 AM
"on the hock for 10-20"?

paying loans :D

MiG
ah heh

Sorry, probably an aglophonism ;D

MiG
that's life I suppose, unless a large bag of money lands on your feet you'll have to get a mortgage

MiG
9:41 AM
an... "aglophonism"? :x

this is about the same size as mine
@MiG uh
So I'm indian/singaporean. I also lived in the UK a year or two
I ... kinda use a lot of very mixed slang
on the hock is probably a british regionalism I picked up from a random book :D
that's the same size

MiG
hadn't heard that one before I'm afraid :)

the default fittings on mine are nicer

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I was kinda excited to see the bomb shelter, but that place doesn't have one :(

Oh it does, he didn't show it
one moment
there's a guy who shows it, but his is smaller I think

MiG
9:44 AM
I don't know how, but the guy somehow made the place look cramped... That bed is way oversized :)
I assume it's nothing special though, just a room :)
having seen the shit the russians have unleashed on pretty much all housing in the Ukrainian cities they're trying to conquer, I have to ask what the point is of a blast proof room over just getting the hell out of there
there was this one building where they managed to shoot out the middle, so the top floors in the center were hanging by rebar

youtu.be/18vc9eohPJw?t=114 is a bigger unit than mine

MiG
I don't think you can build blast proof rooms for that :x

but that's kinda what I'm looking at
youtu.be/5Ub9K55oZ5c is a smaller 2 roomer

MiG
@JourneymanGeek that looks really nice!
interesting monitor setup, the vertical fold
did you notice he has them wall mounted? :)

I need mine side by side
tho I'm considering downgrading to 1+1
lol
So, there's 2 sets of rules

MiG
9:47 AM
maybe his bottom screen is a touchscreen so he can project his mix panel, he said he was playing music right?

the people leasing it say "no"

MiG
lol

the civil defence regs say "ok"

MiG
will there be a sub millimeter inspection at any point in the distant future?

Also I want it to be reversible in case I want to sell

MiG
9:48 AM
if you patch it over with some filler then sand and paint, nobody will notice

@MiG if I sell to upgrade it will be an issue

MiG
I'm pretty sure I can make holes go away - here both renters and buyers don't care, as long as you fill them up before you leave - sanding and painting are even optional

MiG
no house is expected to see so many holes drilled in it over its lifespan that this would in any way threaten structural integrity

I also need to commit to having the setup in the room :D

MiG
9:50 AM
hehe

(I have ideas so...)

MiG
I like working from different places in the house sometimes, desk is the default place but I also sit at the kitchen table, on the balcony etc

and some of the stuff I want to do are probably not code compliant
@MiG my workflow is very agnostic to where my actual PC is
except for gaming

MiG
@JourneymanGeek ah, that varies quite a bit from country to country

@MiG it costs about 300 dollars to 'properly' install a vent fan to a shelter

MiG
9:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek "is very agnostic to where my actual PC is"?

I can buy a pair of aliexpress ones for 30 quid, and test it
@MiG for non gaming stuff, I literally can just RDP or otherwise remote access a system
I believe you can install RDP on an android TV, they support bluetooth(?) and @bob's not your uncle, he's not even related to you that sneaky sneaky fox
for personal stuff at work for example I do this ;)

MiG
I've been marked as native level by my university's language center, people usually have absolutely no idea I'm not a native speaker and I've done almost exclusively international research projects, including with a lot of Brits, but this is the third time you're saying something that doesn't make sense to me (:

@MiG there's 'fluent'
and there's 'mixes 3-4 different colloquial language styles'
Its not you, its me :D

MiG
Yeah, that could be it... Although gf is Indian so I have that particular box ticked as well :P

for example
if I said someone was hollanded...

MiG
9:55 AM
yeah, lost again

no one who wasn't singaporean would understand it meant 'lost'

MiG
is that like "Shanghaied"? :)
ah

cause its singaporean slang from the hokkien ho lan
I'd say it if I wasn't paying attention to my audience tho

MiG
heh, "ho lan" means "lost"?

and has nothing to do with your country :D

MiG
9:57 AM
tbh, "holland" only has to do with about 20% of the country :P

0_0
I don't know that
so...

MiG
there's two provinces that have "Holland" in their name (North Holland and South Holland), the country as a whole is called the Netherlands :)

if my language dosen't make sense...
I speak 6 english dialects in a trenchcoat
here's another one

MiG
there's a tourism marketing bureau that about 30(?) years ago decided "Holland" was easier to pronounce / remember, so they very actively pushed that until recently

in my family - in 'tamil' we say 'repair' to mean broken
(as a loanword)

MiG
9:58 AM
lol, use that in a sentence?
"the TV is repair"?

so I actually tend to go "Its tamil repaired" or "its english repaired"
yup

MiG
:D :D :D
that would be confusing as hell for anyone else :)

or "he made the TV repair"
or the "TV went repair"
and "He's being very assault" in tamil means chill

MiG
your family's originally from the south then?

cause FOR SOME REASON

MiG
9:59 AM
ASSAULT means CHILL? :D :D :D

people turned "asarathai" to assault

MiG
literally laughing out loud here :D
