4 hours later…
MiG
8:42 AM
bizarrely, if you still do the 'safely remove' thing, Win10 immediately gives a small popup saying 'unsafely removed' (even though I just told it to release its file locks), then in the messages tab a few secs later says "it's now safe to remove" etc etc... And now it turns out I can ignore all of them

8:57 AM
lol
Its like close buttons on some elevators?

MiG
?

Some elevators have close buttons that do nothing

MiG
ah heh
not encountered those here yet
they are completely absent sometimes though

as far as you know
they're lying to you man
Some crossings have fake buttons too

MiG
if I press a button and the doors close, there is kind of a direct relation of the button to the door mechanism
I mean, theoretically a guy could be watching the elevator camera like a hawk, and close the doors the microsecond I press the fake button :P

9:00 AM
Or it was gonna close anyway
on a timer

MiG
@JourneymanGeek yeah, that must be country specific

MiG
@JourneymanGeek my dad actually ran the city department that installed and maintained public lighting and traffic lights, definitely not here :)

@MiG Maybe he's part of the conspiracy
They don't want you to know.

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I don't have a fixed time that I press the button, if there are variations it's highly unlikely I hit the fake button the same time the timer hits zero, every single time

9:02 AM
Control is an illusion that society is built on!

MiG
sorry, I'm allergic to conspiracy theories
3

@MiG they clearly have you believing that

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I mean, there is some truth to that but not from the angle that conspiracy theorists like to push

@MiG damn, I was hoping to get another victim of my theory of how the british empire never existed

MiG
I like to extrapolate from the saying "a leader without followers is just a guy shouting in the woods"... 'power' is projected both ways - if the people with guns stop supporting the dictator, he kinda gets toppled

9:05 AM
@MiG I tend to think systems get a life of their own

MiG
well, us humans like to simplify things so we can comprehend them, but the devil is frequently in the details, and then things happen that people didn't expect

10 hours later…
7:15 PM
@MiG Then you should watch the show "Inside Job"

MiG
7:57 PM
"For employees of the Deep State, conspiracies aren't just theories, they're fact. And keeping them a secret is a full-time job." :D
it's gonna have to get in line though, watching the real-life documentaries called 'the witcher' and 'the book of boba fett' first :P
"The series follows a team led by a tech genius and her new partner, as they work in the organization alongside reptilian shapeshifters, a human-dolphin hybrid, and a sapient mushroom from hollow Earth." - this does sound hilarious though :D

2 hours later…
10:03 PM
@MiG a monthly raid check here runs to part of a day... if I had the money I'd probably do an offline raid5 archive
still don't trust a single disk not to turn bad, even if it's sitting in a nice cool dark drawer somewhere
I'd love to do the 'only power it up when needed' approach
but some fool of a took (me) decided that it would bethe be all and end all
The One Disk Storage Area To Rule Them All
so it's got media, backups, VM storage, containers, all sortsa nonsense on there
and more to the point the disks are spread over two desktop PSUs via the ol' "paperclip jumper"
and powering them up needs someone physically there to flick one switch just a little bit before the other
(I am the person sysadmins tell horrible stories about around a campfire)
