Wait so. If my password was being hashed, how do they know that it doesn't meet their requirements?

Q: My admission is revoked after accepting the admission offer

GotoSeattleI applied to PhD program and gladly received official admission offer on the 29th of March. They guaranteed me four-year funding. I accepted the admission offer and was preparing for obtaining student visa. I accepted the offer on the 13th of April, declining two admission offers from other inst...

Ow man

6:07 AM
I don't think I've put a space in a filename since like 7th grade

6:29 AM
lol
I generally do try to avoid it for files, but not necessarily with folders/directories.
If anything, you can generally get around filename issues without actually moving files by using symbolic links (Linux/Unix) or NTFS junction points (Windows; my favorite feature of NTFS).
(One way I use junction points is to move a folder to another location, often another disk, and replace the original folder with a directory junction pointing to the actual location of the data. The application using these files wouldn't be able to tell the difference.)
Jan 27 '16 at 2:26, by bwDraco
Okay. Can I safely use an NTFS junction point to redirect the File History cache at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration to another location?
May 16 '17 at 23:19, by bwDraco
I'm kinda getting tempted to do crazy things like setting junction points for things like the Firefox profile.
Night.

3 hours later…
9:13 AM
@rahuldottech flip this around, why are you against it?

10:12 AM
@Burgi because " is too hard" lol
Only reason I don't like it, is it makes sorting some times go wonky, but that's because the sorting is broken tbh.

10:56 AM
@Burgi It's pointless. Irritating when files have to be uploaded to my server, or when using the command line.

is it just uploads that it irritates you on?

@Burgi and the command line

do you not have tab auto-completion?
with uploads why don't you cleanse the input and strip out spaces?

@Burgi I'm often not in the directory that has the executable that I'm using
@Burgi It's an added step when using FTP and stuff. Like I said. Spaces in filenames aren't necessary, and just annoying
So the guys I write for? They're asking me for a React vs Node article

er.... what?

11:00 AM
@Burgi yeah
idk lmao
They're like... so not related?

well they are
but they aren't direct competitors

@Burgi frontend vs backend, right?
I'm not sure what a comparison would be except that "this is used for ___, and the other is used for ____"

pretty much

I mean. No one wonders "Should I use react or node for this?"
So the article would just be pointless
But w/e man I just want the money

i suppose you could look at the use cases
react on its own is more focused to a single page web app
react + node is more a complete server solution

11:05 AM
@Burgi yeah, that'll probably be the conclusion of the article
Oh, btw, they published the first one I wrote

research MEAN/MERN tech stacks
@rahuldottech did they edit it much?

Such as adding this bit:
> These days, PHP is sometimes the butt of developers jokes. There are two reasons why: a history of occasional security flaws, and syntax that has allowed for newbie developers to write very sloppy code. These two issues have been improved over time, but these problems from the language’s past never seem to go away.

its a fair comment

@Burgi Yeah, true

i didn't realise python was so old

11:08 AM
Also, I can't get my payments till I'm 18!
PayPal rules. I have an account, but for international payments they require a govt. ID which would prove that I'm not 18
That said, I turn 18 in exactly a week!

> You want to learn WordPress or a specific PHP Framework (Drupal, ZEND, etc)
you should have mention laravel

@Burgi They added the "I’d only suggest you learn PHP..." bit too

lol

I just wrote about general web development

> How to Learn Python

11:10 AM
Mine was TL;DR: If only webdev and you want to get started instantly, use PHP, for all other stuff, use Python

isn't this just "get gud"?

@Burgi More appropriate title would be "A chat with _____ about coding and python"
Also lmao
Dude's like "You can write anywhere from 800 to 2000 words" but why tf would I if you're not going to pay me twice the amount for 800 words?

You mean 2000 words
unless they pay you more to write less

@JourneymanGeek as in, twice the amount that you pay for 800 words
s/amount for/amount that you pay for/
I swear, I don't know why I keep seeing stuff like this on the web:
> But when it comes to choosing one of JavaScript Applications, there is often a debate as to whether to choose Angularjs, Node.js or ReactJs.
Like... no, dude. There's no debate. At all. They're all meant for very different things.
At this very moment I have like seven "React vs Node vs Angular" articles opened up and like... why????

the debate is between blog writers... oh wait....

11:24 AM
"vs" => comparison
There's hardly anything to compare here

its called padding your blog

@Burgi lol, here's what I sent to the CEO:
> So, I began exploring "Node vs. Angular vs. React", but since they're not direct competitors, and largely used for completely different purposes (and often even together), I was wondering if you'd like me to write different articles exploring each?
(Sorta along the lines of the JS article I wrote: "What is [framework] and why should I learn it?")

This would also allow me to go in depth with each, and discuss more details and use-cases. Let me know what you think.
More articles == more money, and also more padding

@rahuldottech the fact they can't pay you is a bit troubling...
got an adult you could get to help?

@JourneymanGeek I think they pay he just can't get the money out of paypal

@JourneymanGeek Nah, they can pay. They already sent the $80 for the first article via PayPal. I just couldn't receive it

11:30 AM
ugm

(PayPal asked for ID verification and ^^)

How do you know you get the money at 18 ?

@JourneymanGeek Because I still have the PayPal thingy
From the PayPal email:
> Get your money in just a few easy steps. Claim it by May 11, 2019 or it will be returned to the sender.

uhm
or it will be returned to sender

I turn 18 on the 2nd, so I should be able to verify my ID then and get it

11:34 AM
oh ok

Yeah
If the govt. ID takes longer than expected, they already agreed to re-send it if I'm unable to get the payment before the 11th. So it's all good.
(Yeah I'm trusting them here, but eh. We signed a contract before I started writing for them.)

11:51 AM
does anyone know if it is possible to split the navigator tabs in mysql workbench?

12:02 PM
@Burgi lmao hahaha SQL sucks use flatfiles+serialization for data storage like a pro!!
(jkjk)

Ave
@rahuldottech FYI: paypal is known to shut down accounts of people who created them while under 18

@Ave yeah, you told me about what happened to you once
I'm just going to create a new one and add my ID to it when I turn 18
So I don't have to deal with that hassle
Here's a (slightly compressed) panorama of the town that I live in here in Bhutan: rahul.party/files/2019-04-25_18-00-11_clipping-8669.jpg (~6MB)
Check out the mountains!

did you take that from behind glass?

@Burgi nup
I'm not sure why the defects showed up

there is a weird artefact in the centre that looks like a reflection

12:09 PM
@Burgi yeah, I just took a new one and it had it too, it looks like that's due to the fog
I'm not sure.
Yeah it's in all of them, in the same spot
Perhaps @bwDraco knows why

12:25 PM
So I wanted to make a string stabilizer for my camera
But apparently there are no hardware shops in this town
So I can't get a 1/4 screw

1:05 PM
@rahuldottech lens / sensor burn?

roar
Is this a single image or a stitched panorama?
If this is a panorama automatically generated from multiple exposures, what you're seeing is probably due to variation in lighting or exposure while the panorama was taken.
@djsmiley2k We're talking about vertical banding in the image.
This can also arise from varying amounts of lens flare in the individual exposures while the panorama was taken.
Otherwise, it's simply a limitation of the software that stitched the image together.

1:26 PM
Any ideas how to keep the desktop alive on a remote windows server 2019 so my gui scripts can run indefinitely?

@bwDraco taken with the default camera all on my phone, I'm not sure what it does. Any way to find out?

1:56 PM
did you click a button in the app to make a panorama?

2:28 PM
@bwDraco yah I see it now, couldn't before
@AnArrayOfFunctions stop doing it wrong.
which I'm pretty sure is what.... @Bob told you the other day.
2 days ago, by allquixotic
@AnArrayOfFunctions Yes, this is a well-known limitation of RDP. Don't try to automate input over RDP unattended. If you think you need to, you're doing it wrong -- come up with another solution.
Ah, it was @allquixotic not @Bob

2:49 PM
@AnArrayOfFunctions TeamViewer

No rude but who cares if am doing it wrong - all I want is to do it right
TeamViewer sucks my grandma ballonies

@AnArrayOfFunctions eh, you could possibly ask a question on the main site, or even SF
There's probably a good reason why you arn't getting the answer you want though

There is already some I think
What's that? - I paid 700 for license and I can't do what I want
k
*I didn't actually paid for it - I'm using AWS
but still

@AnArrayOfFunctions that chat-culture here dosen't make it a great place to pop in for a quick question....
Its easier when you're a regular cause you know the crowd. Even then, quite a lot of the things I complain about end up on the site

For example there was no correct answer for the question how to connect to VPN while inside a RDP - I found that myself so...
There was a solution not listed on this site

2:58 PM
Which is fixable

you could have asked the question and self-answered

I added a comment to the original question
instead

you never know, someone might have a better solution...

You want me to create a duplicate and get down-voted?

3:00 PM
Or post a new answer building on the old one

Okay so I don't get this
I can't find a single reasonably priced audio recorder with line-in

Small market?

Can't find a single reasonably priced USB sound card with line-in either
@JourneymanGeek Apparently. Looks like I'm going to have to make my own.

as opposed to a audio in?
define reasonably priced though

3:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek opposed to mic-in

isn't line-in the same as mic-in?

line in is for connecting to outputs of other devices. mic in is for... mics
Just shoot me already

Q: How to prevent windows server from locking?

WindowsXpUserI want to prevent window server from locking ever period. It's because I'm using AWS EC2 and I'm connection with RDP. I tried autologin but it is obviously not working. I've a script which is running in the background drawing on the screen and in the time I've been disconnected nothing was dra...

@AnArrayOfFunctions Dude. You've been asking here for days, you haven't been getting responses, we just told you to go to the main site.

@JourneymanGeek wtf

has a line in right there in the picture

@Burgi not available in India
@JourneymanGeek wtf is that thingy
I want it. But I can't get it.

can you pop across the border to china and grab one direct from the factory?

@rahuldottech Same reaction I had

3:11 PM
@Burgi I wish
@JourneymanGeek ok so it's on amazon India, but it costs as much as a low-end smartphone, so... amazon.in/Behringer-LINE2USB-BEHRINGER-LINE-USB/dp/B01DT827FA/…
Ah, it's just the amazon.com listing with import fees slapped on
This seems like a better option, but still overpriced: amazon.in/Behringer-UCA222-U-Control-Ultra-Low-Interface/dp/…

what happened to that smartphone they marketed for 150 rupees?

@Burgi lmao, failed and the CEO fleed with the crowdfunded money iirc
Also, it was Rs. 251

@AnArrayOfFunctions then you're dumb. lol.
not nice? boo hoo.
It's not nice to waste peoples time, when you're not willing to listen and put in effort.

iirc you can get Azure instances for free

@djsmiley2k Why am I dumb exactly - I didn't follow

3:19 PM
because when you're told something is bad idea, you go 'ah I'll ignore the advice of these fine fellows, and just plow on blindly anyway, and when it doesn't work, I'll continue to keep asking them the same question'.

@AnArrayOfFunctions We told you that what you want can't be done, you keep coming here and pestering us for answers. That's pretty stupid, if you ask me

You're trying to stop the screen of the server locking?

2 days ago, by allquixotic
@AnArrayOfFunctions Yes, this is a well-known limitation of RDP. Don't try to automate input over RDP unattended. If you think you need to, you're doing it wrong -- come up with another solution.

A: How to prevent windows server from locking?

AuraYou can control this behavior via GPO. gpedit.msc -> Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Video and Display Settings -> "Turn Off the Diplay (Plugged in) Enable that GPO, and set the seconds to value to "0". https://redmondmag.com/articles/2016/04/25/disable-...

Why would azure change anything though

Read the answer to their question
Or google it

It's for idling which is not what I want instead immediately after I close the RDP connection

@AnArrayOfFunctions its free?
you'd have saved yourself £700
or run your GUI tests in a VM

Don't use RDP then?

3:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek so I'm thinking...

i suggested TeamViewer

use vnc or teamviewer, or any other number of tools which allow you to connect to a session without causing it to lock.

30 mins ago, by AnArrayOfFunctions
*I didn't actually paid for it - I'm using AWS

Audio injector + Pi zero + small lcd + extensive scripting + battery pack
Seems like bloody pain to do just to record some high quality audio but idk man

@rahuldottech Didn't you buy a USB hardware mixer a while back?

3:24 PM
@bertieb I was thinking of, yeah. But I need something portable at the moment.
Those are way too big

Define "way too big" :P
There are plenty which are sold as portable ones
Mine is about the size of a hardback book
Which is portable enough for some, but too big for others

@bertieb I need something the size of a smartphone

Welp
What about the USB-to-3.5 thing Geek linked?

It's better if it's a recorder with stereo input. Otherwise, a USB audio card of similar size can possibly be worked with
@bertieb Wayyy too expensive to get here in India

@rahuldottech Tried looking for another one? ALiExpress might have something
If someone's done it someone else might've

3:27 PM
@bertieb Spent a couple hours on ali, found nothing

Ah, welp
Small digital recorder, import later?

@bertieb I just need something that I can carry around and record audio with, from a mic or line in

Depends what you're trying to do, I guess

And this is driving me nuts
This should be easy
We've had audio recorders for like six decades
argh
C'mon man

Why not use one of those?
I've seen a couple with inputs that would accept a mic
Given how many people do podcasts (etc) these days, there's probably stuff around

3:32 PM
@bertieb I can't find one which accepts stero mic, let alone line-in
This looks ok but doesn't mention stereo mic input OR line-in

@rahuldottech Buy two and mix the tracks later?

@bertieb too much of a damn hassle
I want something that just works
fml

@rahuldottech As opposed to soldering stuff to a Pi Zero?!
if you can start them at the same time, or do an audio synch cue (eg clap) you could script the mixing

@bertieb at least I'd learn stuff in the process, have fun, and end up with a single goddamned track

shrug
I think you'd learn stuff either way
Depends what you're more interested in

3:38 PM
@bertieb I don't
@bertieb I know how to merge tracks.
This seems
Like it'll work
But so expensive

@bertieb i applied for a job there but they never sent the technical test and wouldn't return my calls

@rahuldottech Apple-to-real-usb adapter?
@rahuldottech Then it's simple!
@Burgi 0_0

@bertieb I'm not going to carry around two recorders man

Lucky break? You'd have missed on all the fun of vampires, disappearing minions, crazy receptionists, naked men in hotels...
@rahuldottech Duct tape them together
Think MacGuyver
Or buy a cheap one and test it to see if its mono input or stereo
Return or resell it if so
It's one of those fast-good-cheap tradeoff situations
Oh, if you're done with exams, etc, do you want to do that USB-over-ethernet test thing we discussed a while back?

@bertieb An 18yo kid won't know who MacGyver is!
feelsold.jpg

3:50 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy ssshshshhhhhshhh
Don't bring your logic and common sense into this
this is the internet, it's no place for that!
Besides, there'll probably be a reboot before the decade's out

its probably about time for one

there already was a reboot
it was shit

Really? Never heard of it.

yup

Stargate SG1 wasn't a reboot!
;-P

3:53 PM
lol

MacGyver is an American action-adventure television series developed by Peter M. Lenkov and starring Lucas Till as the title character. It is a reboot of the ABC series of the same name created by Lee David Zlotoff, which aired from 1985 to 1992. The series premiered on September 23, 2016, on CBS.On April 18, 2018, CBS renewed the series for a third season, which premiered on September 28, 2018. == Plot == Angus "Mac" MacGyver is an operative of a secret U.S. government organization where he uses his extraordinary talent for problem solving and his extensive knowledge of science to save lives....

ah... that never aired in the UK

Huh. Who would've thought.

everyone has been trying to reboot everything that they can get their filthy hands on

i know it says it was broadcast on sky1 but nobody sensible pays for sky tv

3:55 PM
@tereško How long until they try to reboot Reboot?

i'm wondering when they are going to reboot me

^ every morning

@Burgi !!s/reboot/resurrection ship/

@bertieb i ain't a frackin' toaster

3:57 PM
@Burgi when you sleep, your "stream of contentiousness" gets interrupted - from your subjective perspective it's not different from dying

@Burgi ...that you know of!

also, if we live in a simulation, then you would not know that there was a rollback/reboot

what about a git branch?

OH NOES! MERGE CONFLICTS!!!!!

that's not how a sensible simulation would work

4:02 PM
what makes you think it is sensible?

Besides, we can't be running in a simulation, I just ran VirtualBox and everyone knows VBox refuses to be run in virtualisation

@Burgi because if this is a simulation, then there is a higher chance of it being "consumer product" instead of a "proof of concept"

@tereško do you not have cheap chinese knock-offs in latvia? ;)

they are also mass-produced
if I buy fake Converse shoes, they wont have straps made of spaghetti
also, for all practical purposes the "simulation theory" is just a thought experiment
unless you are a physicist (in which case it might become important, because that would imply a hard-coded limit for things that can be "discovered")

2 hours later…
5:59 PM
@bertieb Did you mean nested virtualization? Doesn't AMD + VBox has that?
Can anyone suggest what make a good thermal paste? I mean what quality should I look for when buying it.

@Biswapriyo With the latest version (6.0.6), AFAICT, VirtualBox supports nested virtualization on Ryzen processors.
(AMD hardware is required; I haven't seen any indication of support on Intel processors, oddly enough)
Supported since 6.0. There was a bunch of bug-fixes with the latest update.

@bwDraco what makes Intel different than AMD? I mean I only know some x86 instructions. Aren't they same in Intel and AMD?

The hardware-accelerated virtualization instructions differ significantly. This means that they need to be implemented separately.

@bwDraco So, Intel may help VBox devs, like Valve helps in Proton+dxvk.

6:38 PM
Here i am at work for the 3rd evening in a row

7:25 PM
i should have tried this twitch streaming thing

so you should

it was the jumps i struggled with

If I run different websites on 127.0.0.1 and each sets a cookie then will the browser distinguish the websites or will it send every 127.0.0.1 website's cookie to any 127.0.0.1 website?

it'll send every cookie set on 127.0.0.1
if you need multiple cookies you can simulate different servers with vhosts in apache or IIS

are vhosts done with the Host header in HTTP?

11:17 PM
no they are done with the vhosts config file in your apache directory
a quick google will get you the instructions

I think he means client side

11:29 PM
@JourneymanGeek is that both then..?
client side in the HTTP header, and server side in the vhosts config file?

11:49 PM
laughingsquid.com/indoor-dog-shower cute dog, but I'm dubious....
