@gparyani too broad. Also no answer without being a laptop vendor

@JourneymanGeek Could you please review the question proposal I linked? I've seen similar questions asked on SU in the past and they have been positively received; are those in fact off-topic and in the process of being closed?

sigh
I hate it when people go "I've seen similar questions in the past ,,,, are those off topic?"
I'm saying "It is impossible to answer without being a laptop vendor"
so answers will likely be hypothetical
and as such its not a great question

Hopefully someone with insider knowledge (i.e. an employee of a laptop vendor at the time) would answer the question.

it could range from "there's better options" to "The factory was invaded by rabid badgers so there's no way we can buy a swipe sensor"

@JourneymanGeek Again, as I said, I'm not concerned about potential answers here, but on fitness for the site. Just because answers to a question will likely be hypothetical doesn't necessarily mean that the question itself is too broad.

12:25 AM
The fitness of a question is going to depend on the answers it gets.
A good question has a (or range of) definiate answers

I asked a question on Travel that was deemed too broad despite having a definite answer.

> there is no actual problem to be solved: “I’m curious if other people feel like I do.”
@gparyani that's between travel and you

"Where do I plug the internet cable in??"
"Kids pulled it out!"

@MichaelFrank I can imagine people asking that where I live....
especially since my network setup is slightly unusual

Wife is messaging me that right now.
LOL
it was the cable that went into the PiHole.

12:31 AM
Hehe, when I was a kid, one of my friends had the home Wi-Fi password changed as a punishment, and they got back in by going to their router and pressing the WPS button

silly kids.

can't do that with my router ;)

Another friend with the same punishment found that their parents hadn't changed the router web UI password from the default, and logged in and changed the network key back

Actually my router has no webui

Are you not running PFSense?

12:33 AM
for now, my wireless APs are app controlled but I'd love to swap up for openwrt once libprpl goes mainline
@MichaelFrank nope
ubuntu + firewalld

in theory it gives me a lot more flexibility

@MichaelFrank Doesn't PiHole limit your network connection speeds due to the fact that the Raspberry Pi only supports 10/100 Ethernet?

basically arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/… updated with newer stuff (firewalld simplified management a lot)...
@MichaelFrank if the pihole is your only DNS server... things can break?

The new 3+ model supports Gigabit, but it's limited to 300 Mbps since it uses the internal USB bus

12:35 AM
I used mine as a secondary (and I need to fix it again)

@gparyani It's not a router... it's only a DNS server.

@gparyani you can seperate your DNS (and DHCP) from your main router actually

I know. I thought your Internet connection had to be routed through PiHole

I didn't know it was just a DNS server.

12:37 AM
The poor thing would melt.

snort
I have an original - it falls over if you look at it funny

@JourneymanGeek The 1 Model B?

I've been debating having it run its OS from NFS
@gparyani yup

At one time I worked with a cluster of 16 of them

But I have an older core i3 laptop chip in my router soooooo

Why do heck do you we elects these doofuses?
> 13 MEPs asked for their vote to be recorded differently: 10 said they meant to support it, two meant to oppose it, and one meant to not vote at all. If those were counted, the result would have gone the other way. Despite the updated record of votes, however, the initial result still stands.
.................
seriously?

1 hour later…
@rahuldottech I don't own any
that said I can run any arbitrary commands on my router. Its a feature not a bug
I currently have a few tenda mesh APs, but that's kinda a generation 1 "lets try the cheapest" deployment ;)

lol
@rahuldottech those seem to be semi consumer models.
I try to avoid any router I can't run openwrt or plain vanilla linux on ;)

@JourneymanGeek smart. I should do that too.

@rahuldottech I actually need to test getting openwrt on both my old routers
one runs tomato, one runs asus's stock firmware.
right now I run a plain linux main router.
actually pretty easy to Proof of Concept

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow announced the results, revealing that MPs had rejected:
Leaving the EU with no deal on 12 April
Unilaterally dropping the plan to leave the EU if no deal is reached by 12 April
A new referendum on any deal/s to leave the EU
Leaving the EU but staying in a customs union with the 27 EU states
Two variations on leaving the EU but staying in the European Economic Area (EEA) and rejoining the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)
Negotiating changes to the Withdrawal Agreement more in line with the Labour Party's position
Wtf UK, why can’t you agree on anything? Stop being like us!
We suck, we are not a model to copy
If you gave me 8 options and I rejected them all I’d be called crazy by most people

Joel Spolsky on March 28, 2019

Big news! We’re looking for a new CEO for Stack Overflow. I’m stepping out of the day to day and up to the role of Chairman of the Board. Stack Overflow has been around for more than a decade. As I look back, it’s really amazing how far it has come.  Only six months after we had launched Stack Overflow, my co-founder Jeff Atwood and I were invited to speak at a Microsoft conference for developers in Las Vegas. We were there, I think, to demonstrate that you could use their latest ASP.NET MVC technology on a real website without too much of a disaster. (In fact .NET has been a huge, unmitigated …

@allquixotic they rejected the customs union and the 2nd referendum the least
so parliament is working on those options

> Leaving the EU with no deal on 12 April
Unilaterally dropping the plan to leave the EU if no deal is reached by 12 April
this bit makes me lol
we won't leave with no deal but we won't not leave with no deal.
I know it's not that simple, but comparisons are fun.

i think we will crash out

2:24 PM
Why is it April 12 now? Did they extend it by 2 weeks?

yeah
for "technical reasons"

3:04 PM
!!thisisfine
goverment right now ^^

@ChatBotJohnCavil you've failed me.

Folks, would this be on-topic for SuperUser?
The question is useful. It's just off-topic for EE.SE . The poster is new and he didn't check what's on- anf off-topic, I suspect.
I'm inclined to migrate it to SuperUser.

Q: Is it bad if a cable is higher current rating than a charger?

Majora LunaFirst time asking here, but Is there any potential harm in using a charging cable with a higher current rating than a charger it is connected to? It's a tablet (Asus P027) and its charger is 5V/2A only. I bought a 1-meter/3.3-foot USB-A to USB-C (3.1) cable rated for 3A, it has a 56K resistor...

I personally think it is off-topic for us too
the tablet is running android which is fully off-topic on Super User

ffs
nsx powerops, which was previously working
now mysteriously says the deps aren't installed
I tell it to install them, it goes 'ok done'
and still doesn't think they're installed.
Wait a moment
i may remember.
There's a seperate exe instead of powershell to run.
annnnnnnd nope it's just screwed. ffs

7:37 PM
Hey @GordonRamsay What do you think man
wut

All my code, basically

@rahuldottech nononononono
@djsmiley2k overloaded ha

heh
my eyes can't keep up
I've never seen it that fast.

oh, what is it doing? I see it now.

@Burgi it looks like people might actually get the "proper brexit" just because the government is incompetent

@MichaelFrank that's people helping to grab google+

8:16 PM
@tereško proper brexit being crashing out without a deal?

also known as "WTO Brexit"
that seems to be the best option, since the other one is "not leaving" or "becoming vassal of EU"

is brexit getting much coverage in latvia?

none
and neither was the Article 13

well, at least with Brexit people have heard about it (and those who follow are very unimpressed ... smells like USSR)

8:18 PM
Ah well
Funny bits
1. porn pass in... 2 days
2. EU legistraits for speed limiters in all new cars - the kind of thing Brexit was gonna stop us 'joining in with'

We've already agreed .

@djsmiley2k emm .... hmm ... vote UKIP?

the EU has done some good work but a lot of it is wasteful and undemocratic

:D
@Burgi if democriacy is what we're seeing in parliment, I want off this boat.

8:21 PM
i know :(

@Burgi because the whole thing was made using French government system, that is being run by Germans
what would you expect?

that said, you have to be in it to change it
and the benefits to the average joe is quite good

I assume other average people will benefit as well right, not just Joes?

you can't change it
it is "too big to change"
then best approach would be to cancel the entire thing and make a new one

i'm going to miss my european citizenship

8:24 PM
something that is not made with sole purpose of "stop Germany from going to war"

the UK has benefited hugely from being in the EU

it would seem it had been an equal exchange
but I can say that Baltic States have benefited hugely from UK being in EU

how so?

let's put it this way: all of the money that Germany pays in EU is actually the same as what EU pays to Poland (funny that)
which means that UK was basically paying for most of the infrastructure projects in other "new member" countries

i'm not entirely sure but that doesn't sound true

8:28 PM
I am slightly exaggerating, but that is the rule of thumb
aaand a lot of people were going to UK to work, because everyone under 40 has learned english, nobody has learned french and none cared about german ... and going to work to russia sounds like a loosing proposal

hmm
we paid less that most other countries tho
so.... how's that work

(and the temperament is matching with your northerners)

Lets say Germany put in £10, we only ever put in £7.
So if £10 was going to poland (possible!?) then we still didn't fund everything
as france, italy, etc were all putting in £10 too
We got a really GOOD deal thanks to Major.

we love eastern europeans! they come over here and do good work for a fraction of the price

@djsmiley2k not 10, more like 8.5

8:31 PM
some of us love crying about them
but those same people won't be working in the factories either
they'd rather they just shut down and they were jobless

that said the hungarians two doors down from us woke me up at 5am playing shitty euro-pop at full volume

I can't find the original graph, but what I was looking at was:

/me sighs

i admit a few choice words about immigration were uttered

I'm seeing a large lack of timeframe there

8:35 PM
I googled it as 2017

So that's per year?

as I said: it's not the original
yes, that seems to be per-year
and it's the "balance" not the "paid in"

that graph is totally devoid of context

I will try to find the source that had the context
might take some time

it could indicate that greece has paid out the most and that germany has received the most

8:38 PM
... really ... that's what you are going with

The European Union has a budget to pay for policies carried out at European level (such as agriculture, assistance to poorer regions, trans-European networks, research, some overseas development aid) and for its administration, including a parliament, executive branch, and judiciary that are distinct from those of the member states. These arms administer the application of treaties, laws and agreements between the member states and their expenditure on common policies throughout the Union. According to the European Commission, 6% of expenditure is on administration, compared with 94% on policies...
weird eh
because that says the UK paid less than france

sort by "average net contributions"

France, 2014: France

not just "paid in"

19,573.6
United Kingdom 11,341.6
Oh so we're doing it what, per person?
per part of GDP?
how would you like to spin the figures today.

8:40 PM
jeez

afk, noms

@djsmiley2k sort it by "average net controbution"

Yes, but what average?

EU-27 contributions (2007–13)
average .. from 2007 till 2013
people ... I'm disappointed

average, per what?
per person?
germany has soooooooo many millions more people than the uK

8:43 PM
per year
in trillions

therefore their number should be through the floor compared to ours

It says millions there...

concidering we put in almost the same 'per nation'

my point was, that most of Germany's +9,507 has been going to Poland -8,508
(that's before Greece completely crashed)

8:47 PM
yah sure

I am actually surprised about how much Italy has been paying in ... I heard some rumblings that it too might be on verge of crashing
or at least the south

Or maybe Italy and the UK's contributions have been going to Poland.

/me blames the mafia

Like... just because Germany contributed the most and that's more than the deficit Poland is showing, doesn't mean that it's literally going there.

yeah, but how will it play out, if those 4'000'000'000 goes away

8:50 PM
@tereško Drop Greece as well, problem solved.

I will star that
from what I hear in the "unofficial official channels", everyone has been preparing for "WTO Brexit" for something like a year

9:22 PM
wto?

World Trade Org, I think?

yes

ok er What's the WTO Brexit

aka the 'we're <redacted>ed' Brexit

it's the "no deal" one
everything defaults to WTO rules, and you go from there

9:38 PM
@MichaelFrank I dropped Greece once... the floor was slippery
(maybe I should have gone the something something John Travolta route)

the only thing that might actually be an issue is the Irish border, and that's if EU want's to continue fucking with UK after the breakup (I give it about 50/50 chance)

Ports? Things being more expensive?
Radioisotopes for nuclear medicine?

no, there is "pedestrian traffic" between Northern Ireland and Ireland-proper

Yes, the border is an issue too

there are people how live and work in different sides of border
the border will be an issue only if EU makes it one

9:41 PM
It's quite nice not having as many bombs going off and soldiers / civilians being shot

do you think that there magically will erupt sectarian violence again?

There were five suspicious packages sent out in the last couple of weeks that disrupted airports and shut down the campus of my university
claimed to be sent by someone claiming to be the IRA
there's still folks getting kneecapped in NI by folks with links to paramilitaries
It's one of these tipping point things; it doesn't need much to dig up the very recent past

ugh the city council website doesn't auto-redirect to www so it throws a bad ssl cert error in your face

@Burgi I'm not sure why that always seems to be an issue with government-type domains
or at least a lot of them seem to have that issue
in unrelated news, I have twelve weeks of gas works starting on my street Soon™

twelve weeks?
will it interrupt supply?

9:49 PM
not using induction stove (ya know, those don't blow up that often)?

in the uk, natural gas is the primary method of heating

ugh

I hate using an induction stove
Doesn't work well with woks

agreed

The heating element ones take ages to cool down

9:52 PM
hmm ... that's a point

They are easier to clean tho, I'll give them that

something like this?

Until very recently my stovetop looked quite... well, criminal probably
@tereško How would I use a regular pot on that? :P

I think you were looking for the word: unsanitary

Unsanitary yes, but it was much stronger than that
I like my controlled fire cookin'

9:55 PM
I like cooking on fire too, but that's for shiskebabs (actually "shashlik")

To each their own

make a visit to Baltics in summer(around solstice), you will get it too :D

шашлик?

it got adopted

I think it's a thing further south in the lands of Cyril letters

9:58 PM
it goes really well with beer and curdled cheese
it's the only good thing we got from USSR

or шишче(та)
ah

but it's kinda serious - if you ever want to visit this neck of the woods, do it around solstice

Around the Baltic? how so?

there are solstice festivals around that time
and the weather is not shit

@tereško What is that?
Like some kind of built in wok?

10:11 PM
@MichaelFrank it's a piece of multi-segment induction stove
that segment is specifically made for wok

That's pretty cool

I have been reading up on those things, since I want to buy an apartment
and right after getting a bed, the next purchase would be "kitchen furniture"
(I can't remember the proper term for it)

10:24 PM
Appliances?

Chairs?

That feels more like washing machine, dishwashers tho...

"stuff you put in the kitchen area"
(I also looked at these things: lg.com/us/lg-signature-products#FT32774735 , but they cost an arm, a leg and probably a kidney as a down-payment)

Food?

10:56 PM
@Burgi after all we're good at not blowing up. Cc 5th Nov.
Paraphernalia

11:50 PM
@tereško also probably will get hacked

SUCK IT, JIN-YANG
