superuser.com/q/1407664/10165 I have this mental image of someone flipping a lightswitch repeatedly then a thoom... And all the lights going down...

2:14 AM
To me that reads more like someone was flicking the switches on the circuit breaker box.

2:29 AM
@MichaelFrank true but my mental image is funnier

Hey nerds.
Wanted to ask a quick question bc there's prob at least one person here with experience with this stuff.
I am considering getting kernelcare for one of our debian stretch-based servers (mostly running a bunch of LXC containers), which I definitely don't like restarting (but also don't want it to be insecure). Did anyone here use it before? Do you recommend it?
I was considering using the canonical livepatch thing, but it's only for ubuntu

tbh i'd rather just reboot the box

Bob
10:00 AM
@Ave @allquixotic uses one for Ubuntu, IIRC.
I just reboot my Debian boxes.
@Ave Are you running LXC or LXD?
In theory you can checkpoint/restore via CRIU, or migrate to another server (again via CRIU) if you need HA.
Easier with LXD. Maybe doable with plain LXC. Still moderately complex and maybe worse than kernel live patching.

Ave
lxc
this is a dedi so it'd be a pain to blue/green it
also hosts way too many services that benefit from high uptime so can't really restart often

@Burgi rebooting a box is an anethema to Linux users

@JourneymanGeek i know but VMs are only down for a few seconds. it barely registers on the external uptime checker

@Burgi not everyone outsources stuff. ;p

why is diff hilighting lines that appear to be identical D:

10:13 AM
@djsmiley2k maybe there are invisible characters

10:48 AM
@Burgi nod
just wondering how to diagnose it

Q: Does Notepad++ show all hidden characters?

user89021In Notepad++ I have set "replace tab with 2 spaces". When coding in Python I copy-pasted some code from the web and it appeared indented correctly. But running the code resulted in indentation errors, which I solved in the end by removing all "visible" spaces at line beginnings and inserting the...

A: Notepad++ view hidden characters

SDsolarThe simplest way is to use the menu: View->Show Symbol->Show all characters It will show Tabs and EOL characters. Here is an example of a VBS script that announces the current hour being viewed in Notepad++ on Win7. Note that it is clear I used spaces to do the indents - not Tabs. ...

11:36 AM
@Ave I used to run kernelcare but moved to free canonical livepatch since I'm running Ubuntu now; but before canonical livepatch there was kernelcare, and it worked fine

Ave
@allquixotic alright, that's relieving

I think I had it in production for like 2 years, after Oracle acquired ksplice (the original AFAIK) and before canonical-livepatch
it was a good bridge between the two
(had to stop using ksplice, because whenever Oracle acquires something, they ruin it)

12:15 PM
Wooo broke 5 k

@Ave oh hey. Long time no see.

As someone who wants to go into academia, I hate this.
This is almost completely due to the fact that journals often refuse to publish negative results.
Which sucks, because any information is valuable. Knowing what doesn't impact something can play a major role in figuring out what actually does.

its actually usually the institutions that won't let negative results go to journals
also be warned there isn't much money available in academia

3:52 PM
@Burgi I know. I don't care much for money
Plus I'll always be working on tons of projects on the side, and possibly doing consultation work.

@rahuldottech Money can't buy you love ;)
Can't buy you looooooooooooooooooooooooooooo-ooove

@rahuldottech Depends where you work... there was an academic here in the UK that killed themselves over workload :-\
> According to his wife, he was working evenings, weekends and holidays to keep on top of marking, preparing lectures, setting exam papers and answering emails. She said the university should have known he was struggling.

4:46 PM
@bertieb :-(
@allquixotic ayy <3

Something something something, "Brexit will fix it!"

roar
lol @ "Something something something"

Unis in the UK are being pushed more and more into commercial business-type models

@bertieb :-(

Pack 'em in, get foreign students (they pay more), reduce pensions, all that jazz
My dear alma mater is building a £1Bn 'campus extension'
No idea where they got most of the money from as they 'sacked' a whole buncha lecturers I knew off
But it's okay because they are including a luxury hotel err conference venue
I could probably rant some more but best not to for reasons
Anyhoo
Academia is a nice idea but earning a decent amount of money also gives you the luxury of time to pursue other projects / do fun things
Basically, do what will make you happy
As long as it's not "become a serial killer"
Don't do that

4:54 PM
@bertieb Sage advice

@rahuldottech Do as I say, not as I do! errrrr
On the advice of my lawyer, it was definitely my evil twin who sent that previous message

I remember there was a command to launch driver/service any ideas what was the name of it?

Get out of here, evil twin!
@AnArrayOfFunctions OS?

Err
I'll let someone booted into Windows answer that
I want to say net start <servicename> but don't quote me on that
Clippy, what?
> It looks like you're trying to say `net start <servicename>` but don't quote you on that.

Would you like help?
I'd like help deciphering what you're saying there, Clippy

4:57 PM
Ah I remembered it was sc.exe
Thanks for making me think

My OnePlus 3T just arrived. FedEx unexpectedly put in the mailbox ._.
Soooooo... almost two years in... Do I upgrade now or wait for 5G?
A major technology transition on the horizon and I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

@AnArrayOfFunctions not suire, but if it's really stuck, you likely don't want that disk anymore

I don't want to buy a new phone, then wind up either falling behind or having to spend $500-$1000 a second time less than a year later as other people benefit from the 5G revolution...

5G is several years off

7:37 PM
Plus you can resell phones

i read that verizo are cheating and just updating the logo on some phones to say 5G

For cash money

@Burgi Not Verizon. AT&T.

pffft same thing

!!s/AT&T/Ma Bell/

7:38 PM
@bertieb @Burgi Not Verizon. Ma Bell. (source)

I'm on T-Mobile FWIW.

you could save yourself a crapload and just get a current mid range phone
the specs are only a little behind the flagships but they cost a lot less
or you could just keep your current phone and put the money towards your new car

If I'm going ahead now, it'll be the 8/128 version of the OnePlus 6T, which will be $580.

FIVE HUNDRED????
i only spent £170 on my phone

it must be nice
not working
blowing it all on phones
/me has a £160 phone

7:58 PM
you have the same phone as me
i could be persuaded to go to £200 for a phone but it would have to levitate or something

lol aye
my phones awesome
I literally don't know what else it nees

8:41 PM
the Samsung Galaxy Fold sounds incredible
want a tablet? unfold it
want a small phone? fold it up
now to wait for Apple to do one

@djsmiley2k cross-network parties are a thing in Rocket League now
Just sayin' :D

8:54 PM
And I'm kinda moving away from the whole Android modding scene, and considering something like the Galaxy S10.
(and I intend on getting it unlocked, an option that most people cannot afford)
And in a move that proves to be surprising... Samsung has kept the 3.5mm headphone jack.
(I will need to do some very serious convincing to throw $1,600 on the 12GB/1TB version of the S10+; even if the funds are available, I will very likely not be allowed to make a purchase like this without proving beyond reasonable doubt why this is necessary)
(most people who want this phone are going to be paying $44/month over 36 months rather than spending $1,599 outright, as the majority of Americans just do not have this much cash available)
If unlocked, the device will likely be sourced from Best Buy (something something something, My Best Buy loyalty points).
I'm not too interested in the Galaxy Fold.

9:19 PM
@bertieb the parties?!
how o_O

Ave
@rahuldottech yep hi nerd
