12:00 AM
@bertieb I think we can deal with a little sarcasm

@Bob Ah. I thought you never rooted the S7... or was that the Sony?
I just bought myself an annual sub, because I didn't have the patience to wait 3 hours for a firmware download. Even if I'd been putting off updating for at least 6 months anyway

mhh... what should i study today?

Cats.

!!/caaaat

12:07 AM
The art of disguise. Your assignment today is to sneak into a neo Nazis convention or meeting and slip laxitive into the punch.

Disguising oneself as a laxative? Really?

Better that than a suppository

Bob
@RegularGDPR Rooted the S7, not the S9, not the Sony

@Bob Did you ever update to Oreo?

Bob
@RegularGDPR No, the S7 is still on Nougat

12:47 AM
Lol. After updating my firmware my phone refuses to boot without root

So... my new laptop seems to have a mushy key on the keyboard. Although it generally registers reliably, is it likely to fail? Should I send it in?
(already exchanged it once; would rather not exchange it a second time)

Bob
@RegularGDPR dm-verity shenanigans?
@bwDraco If you don't like it, and your old one didn't have that problem, replace it.
Incidentally, thanks for validating my decision to never buy HP again.

I'm leaning towards continuing to use it for the next few months and seeing if the problem worsens. If it does, it's going to be serviced.
It's not broken per se.
The rest of the laptop is fine.
The key in question is the "A" key.

Bob
@bwDraco IMO you're better off exchanging for a unit that's good out of the box (asuming HP even makes one...)
If it fails down the track, replacing the keyboard is likely to cause other damage.
Also, I've seen warranty service refused on "lost" keys.

Um, "lost"?

Bob
1:00 AM
(granted, that was Toshiba, but I don't have high hopes for HP there)

As in the key physically detached from the keyboard?

Bob
@bwDraco Keys fell off. Multiple keys, over the course of months. Poorly designed keyboard had the scissor switches wearing out on the retaining legs.

Wat.

Bob
That was my brother's Toshiba convertible.

@Bob Yup

Bob
1:01 AM
Otherwise quite a nice machine, but ... the keys fell off.

I've been running dm-verity and force-encrypt disabled since, well, they became the recommended settings for cf-auto-root

I mean, I really, really like this system otherwise.

Bob
That happened a few years in (within the 3 year warranty period though)

It was working fine without before, but meh. Was staying in hostels at the time so not exactly easy to deal with contingencies if it broke

Bob
@RegularGDPR Oh yea, cf/su is discontinued now yea?
I think the recommended solution is now Magisk
Another reason I didn't root the S9. Didn't feel like figuring out/trusting a non-CF root when I didn't really need it.

1:03 AM
Magisk is apparently good if you want deep hiding of root. But sounded complicated to set up (much like Xposed)

Bob
@RegularGDPR Yea, the reason my S7 stayed on an old Nougat was cause Marshmallow to Nougat ended up blowing away my data. Didn't want to deal with that mess just to go Oreo.

@Bob Sorta, the website and original versions are discontinued, there's a new website that you can custom configure images from

Bob
Which incidentally means it was vulnerable to that BT issue for a few months. Blech.

Bob
@RegularGDPR The new website is also discontinued - CF is leaving for good.

1:04 AM
If only any of this shit actually worked. Why is VoLTE on Android such a giant fustercluck?! And how is it iOS is years ahead of Android on some basic functionality like... phone calls
@Bob :-o
Well at least the website's still working (desktop.firmware.mobi) and up-to-date on S7 firmwares and kernels

Bob
Hm. idk
Maybe he handed it over to someone else?

Says (C) 2017. Might have not been updated in a while
Hmm seems you're right, UK firmware is just old. Nothing for the S9 and no S7 updates past April 2018.

!!s/blowing away/eating/

@bwDraco @RegularGDPR Yea, the reason my S7 stayed on an old Nougat was cause Marshmallow to Nougat ended up eating my data. Didn't want to deal with that mess just to go Oreo. (source)

1:13 AM
D'oh. Obviously something as simple as flashing a different CSC requires a full wipe, because repartitioning for a different sized file -_-
... but booting up with a corrupted/null CSC partition works fine? :-0
Bleh. If the newer phones weren't even worse with the lockdowns I'd consider getting one... Apparently my preferred operator's planned upgrades involve moving to 5-carrier CA...

1:36 AM
How is the phone going to function on any network with a null IMEI?

Magic!

Apr 15 '17 at 0:29, by Dog
In the old days it was trivially easy to reprogram (or accidentally erase) your IMEI number and I accidentally made my phones IMEI into 000000000000...etc. once. All the networks accepted it.

Bob
@RegularGDPR Not with OXM, supposedly :P

2:06 AM
@Bob Wait, what vulnerability was that?

Incidentally we have a new one now: kb.cert.org/vuls/id/304725
Not a RCE but still looks pretty bad.

@Bob I wonder how I managed to never hear of that
Hmm. So changing my CSC from within Android resulted in an unscheduled factory reset of my phone, and still no VoLTE

Bob
2:27 AM
@RegularGDPR Yea that's expected. It should warn you before the reset though.
(For some reason my S9 doesn't let me change CSC :( )

Nah, no warning.
Might as well go the whole hog and install the full operator specific firmware I guess
It's possible it's just my SIM that doesn't support it since I'm on a data-only SIM...

Bob
Are you making up those stories to hoard rep points? Because it's somehow hard to believe for me that all of your family members are occupied primarily on generating problems on air travel... — Rg7x gW6a cQ3g 19 hours ago
@RegularGDPR With OXM firmware on S8/9 there isn't operator-specific firmware anymore if your operator falls under OXM.

It's odd cause O2 ambiguously implies you don't need operator specific firmware to have VoLTE working

Bob
The CSCs still exist, they're just all bundled up in one firmware.
The checksum is identical iirc.

@Bob I'd rather have that tbh
I guess they finally put enough storage in the phone by default to store all the operators' custom bloat...

2:33 AM
@RegularGDPR VoLTE is a crapshoot
works on my jelly, dosen't work on my OP5T
despite people constantly asking for support for it on the latter...

2 hours ago, by RegularGDPR
If only any of this shit actually worked. Why is VoLTE on Android such a giant fustercluck?! And how is it iOS is years ahead of Android on some basic functionality like... phone calls

@RegularGDPR cause there's one apple phone maker

Also networks barring you from using long range LTE bands unless your phone is signed on to VoLTE

2:35 AM
also, my ISP is slightly full of... it...

@JourneymanGeek Not one Android phone maker supports VoLTE across multiple operators without operator-specific firmware
I suspect it's more the case that Apple has more power to tell the operators to f*** off if they demand customized concessions.
Same as the reasons behind why OS and security updates are a crapshoot on Android.

Bob
@RegularGDPR It's supposed to prompt you to switch (with reset) when you insert a recognised (covered) SIM.

My ISP telco also has Vowifi... on iphones

@Bob Interesting. Sony has something similar (when you reboot with a new SIM it prompts you "Your phone will be rebooted [again] to be optimized for your network provider")
As for need for resets, gtfo.

my mom's oppo does that

2:38 AM
Seriously why can't they just standardize VoLTE settings in the same way GPRS APN settings were standardised. You don't need to wipe your bloody phone to change the APN

My OP just... takes the sim card and works

Ironically, some phones that have no operator specific firmware at all (because they are too small or niche to have been picked up by any operators here), just work on several operators. Not sure how... but it just goes.

@RegularGDPR like the jelly ;p

3:09 AM
Full operator firmware, no VoLTE. Probably lack of support on my SIM. Oddly enough, the full operator firmware lacks the built-in operator IMS settings present on the unbranded firmware...
Dafuq
So my O2 firmware hides the WiFi and 4G calling options when using an O2 SIM card but shows them when using a Vodafone SIM card. facepalm
I mean there's crapshoot, and then there's what the genuine fuck.

Lol
No working with my Vodafone sim and Vodafone firmware either, but the probably because it thought it would be smart to default to the Vodafone D2 Germany CSC
Fuck you Samsung

Bob
@RegularGDPR o_O

Funny enough the thing that most made me notice was the fact it said "LTE" next to the signal bars instead of 4G
On the plus side, with the UK firmware it does just work seamlessly! Woohoo just made my first 4G to 4G HD Voice over LTE call!
On the downside, there's no indicator or toggle for it
And also the Vodafone firmware is bloated and laggy as hell

Bob
4:00 AM
@RegularGDPR \o/
I've never used VoLTE and probably never will

@Bob Lol
I'm more surprised cross-network HD calling is working now, they made a big fuss about when they launched it, but it was same-operator only and everybody whinged.
Tbh the only reason I want VoLTE working is because a) O2 withdrew the app-based UMA, and b) The 2G/3G reselection around here is so abysmal that I generally lock my phone to 4G only unless I need to make a call
Also somewhat surprised VoLTE <=> VoLTE worked seamlessly, as it used to not work for incoming calls

Bob
@RegularGDPR I don't plan to buy carrier phones, and hacking non-carrier into working is looking like a huge pain. Probably doable on the S7 but I can't even get the unbranded XSA firmware on this S9.
I suppose in theory AU stock would work but $$$ and no dual-SIM.
Heck. I'd be happy to pay the $$$ if I could get a local model with dual-SIM.
Even the Note8 was only single-SIM.

@Bob It's beginning to work on non-carrier phones aside from iPhones - the latest Sony XZ1 series supports VoLTE on non-carrier versions, but only on certain carriers. All UK carriers claim to be "working on" enabling it on non-carrier-handsets.
Basically the current giant fustercluck will end someday. Ideally with Google implementing a robust, built-in VoLTE layer in Android instead of each manufacturer implementing their own.
OhooohooOOOhh. Vodafone's VoLTE works when the phone is locked to 4G only. (EE, the network who had the first and most widely available VoLTE in this country, barrs VoLTE when in LTE only mode. So I have use a hack that puts the phone in 3G/4G mode, but then disable the 3G2100 band)
Right, so after fucking about with that for the last few hours I'm gonna restore my old firmware and data with TWRP and go to sleep

5:00 AM
Man I love TWRP. 4 minutes and it's restored everything, except my phone's ability to actually phone. Quick reflash of the modem sorted that, but I did have to get back out of bed to do it.
Bleh, Samsung used to be so open. Heck, that's how the Galaxy series got popular in the first place.

Bob
5:21 AM
@RegularGDPR To be fair, they still do have unlockable bootloaders without having to register for shit or buying a special European model.
*looks at LG and Xiaomi*

5:38 AM

3:18 PM
@Burgi Well there's a forking surprise
Grr what's with all the ridiculous "This product contains nicotine" warning labels on products that contain no nicotine whatsoever, but instead just block out important parts of the product label so I can't read what it actually does contain

lol

peel it off?
google?

I wouldn't be trusting any product which claims to contain niccotine and infact doesn't.

@JourneymanGeek It's excessively sticky. And the problem is trying to figure out if it's the gunoe
gimped EU version or the regular non-EU version, which is often mis-publicised on the product listing
Every e-cigarette product I've come across says it. At least some have the vaguely sane enhancement of saying "This product contains nicotine*

* When used with nicotine containing e-liquids"

Thats like saying 'This car contains petrol*

*When you put petrol in it"
or the best one
"This cat contains unlimited amounts of explosive anger*

*If you rub his tummy"

Meanwhile a literal empty tank I bought which you could put whatever you want in, has two labels, front and back, saying unconditionally this product definitely contains nicotine.

@Bob mod's descresion

No it contains steel, air, glass, and plastic.

that's actually a clever part of the COC 2.0

I could put petrol in it, yet it contains nicotine which is addictive but no petroleum which is highly flammable

Bob
3:39 PM
@RegularGDPR What if they rinsed it with nicotine before selling it?

It's like having a warning on all computers stuck with glue to the middle of the display saying "Warning this product contains computer games, which are a highly addictive substance"

Bob
Anyway it's pretty standard for warning labels for the intended contents.
e.g. if you go buy an empty petrol container it'll likely have flammable liquid warnings on it

@Bob That's on the petrol container though, not the box it came in.

Bob
@RegularGDPR Oh, the box. Yea that's dumb.

@RegularGDPR That's kind of true thanks to Windows 10 though :p

3:40 PM
@BenN Have you never played Solitaire?

Oh I forgot about those, heh
But Solitaire never thrust itself to the top of my Start menu

Bob
Actually. I miss WIn7 Minesweeper and Solitaire :P

If you bought a box of pint glasses you wouldn't expect a label over the description saying "This product contains alcohol which is a highly addictive substance"*

* This warning applies when this product is used with alcohol containing liquids

Bob
@BenN OTOH it was far more addictive than Candy Crush will ever be. Bleargh.

The irony is, Amazon has a policy of banning all nicotine containing products.
Amazon do not sell and do not allow the sale of any e-liquids containing nicotine, or e-cigarette kits that come with nicotine containing liquids or refills.

Bob
3:43 PM
@bertieb s/am not sure/I'm *sure*/

It's fine for me cause there's a shop around the corner that sells a weeks' worth of concentrated nicotine liquid for £1.99
@Bob Then they should have a small allergy warning sticker saying "Produced in a factory that processes nicotine. Cannot guarantee will be free of all traces of nicotine"

Bob
Apparently nicotine liquid is rather illegal in AU
*shrug* <== non-smoker

<== also non-smoker
@Bob All nicotine containing liquids, or just concentrated nicotine on its own?#

Bob
@RegularGDPR It's complicated.

@Bob Erf. That's painfully retarded
(Unless smoking itself is equally regulated, which I suspect it's not)
US regulation is basically non-existent, EU legislation came in as a knee-jerk child-protection measure only, but is otherwise unregulated (and untaxed). Ultimately it's true that long-term scientific information on the health effects of vaping are unclear, but it's undeniably a heck of a lot less harmful than inhaling burning smoke and tar.

3:53 PM
@RegularGDPR :O
you can't use that word!

@allquixotic Why, because retarded government decision makers may be offended? Or the public may realise they are retarded and replace them?#

Bob
@RegularGDPR It more or less is.

@Bob As in it's illegal to smoke, import, or buy cigarettes unless under prescription?

Bob
@RegularGDPR Smoking/vaping are equally fine (we don't talk about QLD.). Importing is (probably) similarly restricted. Buying is where it's different, I suppose - it's much easier to buy cigarettes locally.

3:56 PM
@RegularGDPR no, because Be Nice

@allquixotic Be nice got removed. It's now be "kind".

Bob
You can import cigarettes, just ... have fun paying the import duty.

@allquixotic That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

And I would say "retarded" is being generous and kind.
@Bob Yeah, well that's completely different imo. Cigarettes and e-cigarettes are equally restricted to over 18's here, but neither is classified as a poison that is illegal to sell.
@allquixotic It got unstarred :-/

@RegularGDPR True, I think cigarettes have a special exemption for nicotine.

See! No "Be nice" anymore!

Bob
Reasons for the current state (and why it's remaining) are listed there.

It's mostly detailed explanations on how to be helpful to other site members, but no explicit demand to be nice to retards in general society at large.

That's pretty much what the EU did, except with a 1.8% limit

I'm tempted though. Looks decent. aliexpress.com/store/product/…

paste <(seq 3) <(seq 3 2 8) | tail -1 | awk '{print $1+$2}' | cut -c1 Can someone please explain what's happening here? thanks

@sP_ Its a convoluted way to print a one, that's for sure
@sP_ basically seq 3 generates 1,2,3 in separate lines, seq 3 2 8 generates 3,5,7 (Create a sequence from 3 - 8 adding 2 each time)
paste combines these two files vertically so that you have
1       3
2       5
3       7
tail -1 grabs the last line of this output -> 3 7
the awk line adds the two columns (3+7) = 10
And the cut -c1 retrieves the first "column" in the file (in this case 1 from 10)

@AmithKK Thank you so much. After playing around with it I was able to deduce what's happening till the awk part but wasn't sure what's happening at cut. Thanks, again! :)

@sP_ :)
