today we (read: me) added webm, webp and weba support to the image host we're working on (elixi.re)

this stuff was about that too, and now we're patching in ClamAV support

Unfortunately, resizing partitions is an inherently risky operation. If you happen to have a backup, you're best off restoring to it (if not, make a backup as soon as you get this working again!). If the partition is still generally readable when mounted elsewhere and only not bootable, you might have some luck doing an in-place upgrade of Windows to the same version via bootable drive — that should fix any corrupted OS files. But I'd recommend taking a backup before doing anything else, in case you cause further damage. — Bob 1 hour ago

That's a bit of an exaggeration imo... Resizing a partition using official Microsoft tools isn't inherently any more risky than creating, mounting, chkdsk'ing or defragging it. Using third party tools and pre-boot stuff however...

Heck I'd say it's no more risky than hibernation

@Bob: I have never had a case of data loss or corruption due to a partition resizing operation. I do it all the time.

(mainly because I'm tend to overprovision SSDs or short-stroke hard drives by partitioning it to no more than what I expect to use, resizing as needed)

@FMLCat They were doing a shrink that required file moves.

I did mention in the other chatroom that the MS built-in tools are generally safest, but not very flexible.

@JoeyLópez the only realiable way is within Windows, which only lets you shrink down as far as the last written block (usually halfway on a new partition, could be later if the drive was used for a while)

It does actually allow (and automatically do) moving of files and thus shrinking beyond "used" blocks, by utilising windows' built in defragger

@Bob nope, been there as long as the shrink feature has existed. It effectively calls the stock windows defragger in "consolidate free space" mode in order to shrink.

I believe system restore blobs and the hibernation file also lock/block resizing merely by existing even when not actively in use

I've broken/corrupted/lost and recovered more data, partitions, and storage arrays than you can shake a fox's tail at... Yet never had the slightest hint of a problem using Windows' built in resizer.
