@Bob more on SE killing off third party openid support twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/966276679458058240 ;p

Bob
1:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek blech

"in the past 6 months" might implicitly assume so?

1:46 AM
Surely either KVM or KVM could be called something else?

like KVM?

MHID
Multi Host Input Device
thumbsup

also, why are MHID over IP not a thing? ;p

That sounds like something HDMI could solve.
HMID over HDMI over IP.
This video seems to think that MHID KVM over IP is a thing...

Bob
@MichaelFrank ...yea, it is. I use it probably once a month
which is already far too often, mind

1:54 AM
My KVM over IP is more like KVM over cellphone, and usually involves calling my wife and asking her to push the little button on the front of the box.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tracking code works now, 'cept the package seems to be in limbo
@MichaelFrank that's too low bandwidth for me

Yea, security is good though. I normally have to answer a bunch of security questions like "How is your day going?" and "What do you want for dinner?"

2:06 AM
@MichaelFrank I rent from a homing company that doesn't provide any tech support (0x7x365) and does not provide love or even the most basic service, so if I need a box rebooted at home I have to go there and do it myself
miracle they manage to keep the lights on

Sounds like you need to think outside the box... Can they power cycle your whole apartment (?) from the outside?

lol
@MichaelFrank I've done that a few times

@JourneymanGeek wait... what?
To reboot a single machine?!

2:21 AM
no, ;p
Well (Our drier used to trip the whole apartment when it overheated)

Ahhh yep.

Eventually we stuck a breaker on that plug

Bob
3:13 AM
@bwDraco @JourneymanGeek Heard of the Kingston A400?

@Bob no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I might be looking at cheap SSDs again :P

ah ;p
might be popping out today
I could pick up the op5t.... ;p

Bob
3:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek not waiting for next gen? :P

ugh. Can't really trust the op3
(tho the bubblewrap case and extreme carefulness works
and not having a modern, reliable working phone is a pain

3:40 AM
@bwDraco After reading that LifeProTip I got distracted and continued reading more...
Some of the tips there are absolutely awful.

3:57 AM
Well, nothing new to me. Clock frequency is limited by the slowest pipeline stage.
35
A: Why are newer generations of processors faster at the same clock speed?

bwDracoDesigning a processor to deliver high performance is far more than just increasing the clock rate. There are numerous other ways to increase performance, enabled through Moore's law and instrumental to the design of modern processors. Clock rates can't increase indefinitely. At first glance, i...

All these games from 90s and 20s...
Time to get rid of them. Goodbye childhood.
I still have PlayStation 1 with its games. Wonder if there is anyone on eBay wanting it...

"20s"
dude.

you have 2020s games? dude, sell your copy of the production launch of Star Citizen for $1 billion US
then retire to an island

5:49 AM
...and it looks I will not be home until after 2 am.

Bob
6:15 AM
hi

6:29 AM
@Bob I want a Vega M GH (100W part) 15” laptop :D Fortunately my existing kit seems to be worth quite a lot per eBay
If the next MBP comes out and it doesn’t have a GH model I’ll be pretty disappointed and might just buy a HP or Dell one
My ideal system would be a 15” MBP with 32GB RAM, Vega M GH and 4TB SSD - could probably live on that for a long time

Bob
@allquixotic ...existing kit?

@allquixotic or razer. Cause they probably know what's what there ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "for a long time" and "razer" seem incompatible

@Bob Alienware 13 R3 with a 1060 (heavy brute) and 13” MBP with Touchbar and Iris graphics (i7-6567U)

@Bob I've been ok with mine!

Bob
6:37 AM
@allquixotic ah. so performance-wise it'd be a sidegrade, but you'd effectively get the perf in a lighter device?

And thinner; yes

Bob
hm
sounds good

I’m happy with the 1060’s perf for the foreseeable future

Bob
are they out yet?

Nope :( and the first ones to hit will have fewer CUs apparently

Bob
6:39 AM
oof

65W and 20 rather than 24

Bob
GL?

Yeah
I want GH unless it’s going to make it exactly as heavy and big as the Alienware 13 R3, in which case wtf is the point of making the chip

Bob
heh, I havne't bothered to upgrade my laptop with the Haswell quad and 860M

@allquixotic and by that point, nvidia is doing maxQ anyway so....

Bob
6:40 AM
not much laptop gaming these days anyway

@JourneymanGeek MaxQ is just less perf but lighter; it’s a tradeoff
Supposedly Vega M is an objective reduction in weight and size without harming perf relative to a 1060
Or 1050 in the case of GL

....
I think I thought you were talking about those intel/vega hybrid things for some reason

I was/am

Bob
@allquixotic I'm a bit disappointed they couldn't do that with nvidia though... would love to see a 1070 or better paired but I guess they can't fit it (power or physical size, idk)
given that the full-size pascals are more efficient than the full-size vegas
maybe vega scales down better?
since AMD does APUs anyway and Nvidia doesn't... (Tegra?)
also, weird how we seem to have stepped back into 2012

lol
@allquixotic that I thought you weren't means I am even more confused.
@Bob or they basically could/did licence the IP core in return for... something else
(money? More patent cross licencing?)
@Bob well, nvidia does do integrated SOCs - just that they seem focused on the high end tablet/car market

Bob
6:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek yea, Tegra :P cept I forget how they perform

@Bob also, not x86
unless they can do a qualcomm...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I meant in an intel x86 + nvidia gpu combo

Bob
but I suspect vega beats whatever nvidia does in tegra

probably

Bob
6:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek looks like the Tegra P1 might have a GPU on par with the GT 1030
which is ... sad
that said it's a 15W TDP part, soooo
I suppose in theory nvidia could do a pascal gpu in the ~50-75W TDP region that could be combined with an x86 core
but that'll probably be new territory for them
and might come out with 1050/1060-like perf (like the vega m) anyway
huh, the Switch hasn't even been out a full year yet

@Bob Nvidia will never do an EMIB until their mainstream chips are HBM because GDDR takes too much board space and power.
I don’t think Vega M would have been possible in an EMIB design without it being HBM
Too bad the CPU can’t use the HBM as L4 cache like the Iris Pro eDRAM solution - that’d be amazing even for (certain) CPU workloads

I passed but am imposter syndroming hard :p

oh that's normal
honestly don't worry about it

any bad place, isn't worth being at

Lol ya.

Tho you already know this ;D
Your experience of bad places, will be far more valuable than you'd ever believe.

BING

@cpx Excellent movie. I watched it a few months ago. I felt quite sad at the treatment by the government of poor Turing just because of his sexuality. The film is not entirely historically accurate, however, that is not unusual for screen plays of real events.
I love the movie @cpx
Also, @DavidPostill more than just a few months ago... chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=34344119#34344119 :P

yay my boiler has broken :(

@Burgi derp
:(
Low pressure, or actually broken?
My old one leaked water onto it's controlboard, that was 'awesome'
I replaced the control board myself after the plumber idenfied the fault, he wasn't happy about that but he got paid so meh

its got F1 flashing and i've just had an ice shower

model?

a white one?

Every other error I've seen on my boiler has been low pressure alarms
lol
you can do better than that. at least give me a manufacter

3:27 PM
its in my rental argeement that i don't attempt self-repair
ideal c24
my girlfriend is grumping because she can't have a shower

yeah if it's pressure tho it's normally just turning a tap
yup F1 is pressure.
On the boiler is there a pressure gauge?
If so, your pressure should likely be between 1 and 1.5 bar
ffs I can't type
Not 'exploded' like this one.

i don't have a pressure gauge

3:44 PM
D:
then I suggest you contact your landlord for a plumber
you don't want to try repressurising a system when you don't know what the pressure is.

@djsmiley2k you are 20 minutes late with that advice
already called them

Bob
yay, plumbing issues

do you think jay zed had plumbing issues in his song?

Journeyman GeekWhat we have here is a failure to communicate. There's a few issues in play here, many of which are well, not technical. @bertieb hah
its a badge I really wanted here. I have like, 7 of those on MSE

@djsmiley2k at least you're honest!

@allquixotic I try to be, with people I at least respect :D
The machines lightness was amazing, the way the metal edge cut into my wrists if i was typing on the built in keyboard? no so much
we had thunderbolt or lightnining connectors or something setup, so i could just plug a cable in and have 2 monitors

@djsmiley2k Thunderbolt or lightning? Sounds very very frighting

yeah, those machines were/are quite light considering what's under the hood

My problem has never really been with Apple products tho
it's with the company...

I have a 13" 2016 MBP with Touchbar, which is the same but Skylake instead of Broadwell, bit faster storage, way better touchpad, and a touchbar

I think they might as been as old as 2014?

@bertieb 7/10 ;p

8:23 PM
As far as the company, I'm not sure what specifically you're referring to, but generally speaking, most sufficiently large corporations are all equally bad. Especially Google, Microsoft, Intel, AMD, and Apple. The only decently-sized corporations in computing that I genuinely respect for their decisions are Red Hat and Joyent.

and Sun Microsystems pre-Oracle (RIP)

@allquixotic you're holding it wrong, you're using it wrong...

8:24 PM
go away Oracle

(there's only one company I hate even more ;p)

you're putting it on a table wrong.

@djsmiley2k that's just a Steve Jobsism; Apple is not the same company post-Steve. They've become much more pragmatic and they've realized that those kinds of patronizing "excuses" don't work. Besides that, I literally ignore the marketing entirely. I get all my Apple product news from third-parties. I have nothing good to say about Apple marketing, because I don't pay any attention to it.

You know about the Apple Pod leaving lovely watermarks on wooden tables?

Steve was good and bad. Good for creating categories of devices and spurring innovation across the industry. Bad for being too patronizing to customers and inflexible in giving customers choice.

8:27 PM
heh, fordism
but yeah
he was a dick, but the world loves a dick.

resists the urge to TWSS

lol

@djsmiley2k Certain Sonos speakers do the same thing. It's some weird, slow-acting, chemical reaction between the silicone and the wood or the polish on the wood. I don't think that excuses them from not testing this and using a different compound for the bottom of the speaker, but it's just a product flaw.

It's not a flaw, you're putting it on the table wrong

Apple will writhe and squirm to try not to be liable for damages for it, and they'll try to tell customers how to avoid it, etc. like every other company in deep shit
I haven't heard them literally say "you're putting it on the table wrong"

8:29 PM
lol no

ship it with a coaster? ;p

but it's the squirming
how about the 'whoops we gave your cloud account access away' D:
yes, can happen to any company
I guess i find it easier to be annoyed by them, as I don't care for their products.
No matter how much I felt disappointed in sony for messing up the psn credit card storage those years ago, I still ended up buying a PS4

Granted, Apple is not the best company when it comes to addressing flaws when they do happen. Waiting a long long time to have free repair programs for GPU problems on old Macbooks. Waiting a long long time to have a free repair program for the Touch IC disease in the iPhone 6 Plus.

because there's nothing else to fill that void for me.
oh yeah
remember popping open ipods?
and then the same thing happened with early iphones xD

But I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum: I greatly value Apple's products' features, and couldn't give two shits about the Playstation, so I'm happy to dump on Sony.

8:33 PM
nod.
I can get that ;D
Then again, wtf is with the xbox one

I see the computing devices market as if it were a StackExchange Q&A site: buildmeadevice.stackexchange.com
My Q: Give me a device that does _____
there are 13 answers, each with a couple upvotes, and several major flaws each, inaccuracies, problems, limitations
as well as a bunch of highly downvoted bullshit that's just knockoffs and fakes
I "accepted" Apple's answer not because I think it's the perfect answer, but because it's the best answer of the ones available for what I needed
so they get the green checkmark, a.k.a. my money

Isn't that hardwarerecs? :P

nod

@bertieb no :P I'm saying if hypothetically there were a SE site where the answer was to literally give you a physical device
"Here" hands you a device with a list of features would be the answer for each

I know, I know; facetious etc :P

8:36 PM
And once yuou're in the apple eco system, some of their stuff does work really nicely together.

@djsmiley2k the perennial ecosystem conundrum: looks bad from the outside, but feels damn good from the inside

wtf
where's my alt ending?!
For that discussion yesterday about saving every page you visit XD

@djsmiley2k neat

So... for those already playing the console version (@MichaelFrank, @djsmiley2k), any thoughts on load times?
At >155 GB with the high-res assets, I think I'm going to want to put it on the main NVMe SSD.

it's open world, you hardly notice em
it's just slow when re-loading because death or whatever

Fast travel load times are reported to be very long.
(Assassin's Creed Origins has pushed 40-50 MB/s disk streaming I/O, and I suspect FFXV will push even more, at which point my SATA SSD may actually be a bottleneck under certain conditions)
I might move some of my existing games onto the other SSD.
Probably not as hard as Star Citizen (@allquixotic, any info on how much I/O Star Citizen does?)
Is it compute-bound or I/O-bound?

9:42 PM
@bwDraco It's not as long as skyrim
also don't fast travel

@allquixotic My ex-flatmate claims to have had three Corsair PSUs fail in the space of two years

11:28 PM
Sounds like they need to get their power checked

If the game costs $40, there's room to raise the base price. There is no excuse for doing this.
Or is the game $40 precisely because dropping the base price and relying on microtransactions will increase profits?
Look, it's abundantly clear that $60 isn't enough. Heck, even $80 isn't enough given that an entire half of revenue at a couple of studios is from microtransactions.
But... will consumers pay $100, $120, or even $150 for a premium game if it meant eliminating microtransactions?

or just wait for it to go on sale

Bob
@bwDraco I don't know why you seem so eager to argue in favour of greedy publishers.

SO, here's the thing.

I wouldn't be surprised that given current and future production costs, even $200 would be needed to cover costs without microtransactions.

11:41 PM
How much extra work goes into adding a second save slot?

@JourneymanGeek I'm talking about the whole game's production costs.

Wait what! Since when is Konami still making games?!
Especially Metal Gear games

@bwDraco simple economics? I'm not paying 200 dollars for a game now if I can wait 6-8 months and get it for like, half the price. Or less.

At this point... the episodic model makes a lot more sense.

@djsmiley2k I agree. Or the components drawing from it. I also had someone who complained their motherboard+CPU failed at about the same rate as @FMLCat just said his flatmate's PSUs failed. Replaced their ratty PSU and the motherboards+CPUs stopped failing

11:45 PM
@bwDraco with sufficient content, sure
but that essentially would mean "60 dollar base game and DLCs"

Bob
@bwDraco I really have no idea where you get the idea that publishers are starving for cash.

@JourneymanGeek That's better than microtransactions if the DLCs are reasonably sized.

or "base game, and tons of cosmetics"

@djsmiley2k We had 3 other people in the flat with multiple PCs, nobody else had issues

Bob
And, really, if they are then that's more mismanagement than anything.
It's more a case of seeing what looks to be easy money and going for it to the detriment of the customer.

11:46 PM
To be fair the PSU only outright failed once. The other times were everything else blowing up in his PC which he blamed on the power supply

TBH if Konami is doing this then they're getting very desperate for cash. They can't really last much longer.
Businesses (in any industry) doing things like this and getting increasingly aggressive with getting every last dollar they can while minimizing losses, from autoplaying video ads to binding arbitration clauses in TOS agreements, shows that every dollar counts in today's economy.

which is not entirely a positive thing
greed isn't good
