People speaking about drinking tap water as if it's normal sounds so otherwordly to me

Q: How can I avoid ordering multiple bottles of water at a restaurant?

CornstalksI have a couple esophageal conditions that result in a high probability of a food bolus impaction when eating (a food bolus impaction is when food gets stuck in the esophagus). There are a few precautions I take when eating to reduce the risk of food getting stuck in my esophagus, one of them bei...

Bob
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I prefer tap water :P
Boiled water is ... flat

tap water here is 99% lime here

@Avery lol
New York City's tap water is generally considered to be every bit as good as spring water, if not better.

12:57 AM
IoT security issues. Again.

Tap water is 99% coliforms here

Yay. I found the other end of the cable in the classroom that is driving me mad.

Bob
1:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek is it plugged into a toaster?

Oddly no. Same switch as everything

Bob
1:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek you should plug it into a toaster
it can only help

2:20 AM
Lol

2:34 AM
I think I fixed it by swapping ports. Sad part is I never noted down what port it was before

@BenN Don't you know the S in IoT stands for Security?!

Bob
2:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek What kind of switch?
Maybe a funny VLAN config?

.... regular dumb switch

Bob
... o.O

I think they seperated out the subnets at the firewall, so could be some oddness there
oh believe me, I considered that ;p
..... now that I fixed it. I WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT IT WAS :(
this is like having a nemesis in shadow of mordor who just won't die. then suddenly gets eaten by a garg

1 hour later…
4:13 AM
According to the cable company reps who keep calling me, it's because I haven't upgraded to the XTREME GIGABAND PANAMAX FLAVOR-BLASTED PRO PACKAGE WITH HBO, which is only $5 more per month for the first 6 months and five billion dollars per month after that.

@XKCD lel

lol
ironically, its both for the same reason

5:09 AM
I'm having that happen
for ~3 years now
spend ~15gb on cellular per month.

5:29 AM
Hello!

5:41 AM
heh. My manager is trying to reinstall 2003 on a server for reasons. Its sata and that old rustbucket/OS wouldn't detect it and we have no floppy drives...
I was "Its like XP right? Go into bios, and change that and that and..."
boom. It installs. We'll probably regret it later but, I look smart ;)

@XKCD the alt text is amazing

lol
tbh, since I'm making ethernet cables at work... I have no excuse not to cable up my apartment, other than PAF ;p
also, I got leave for my birthday. No pay leave ;p
since I'm on probation and this place kinda sucks

Bob
@JourneymanGeek whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy‌yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
oh well, it'll probably be cryptowared within the week
silver linings...

cause management won't fund a new AD server

Bob
@JourneymanGeek got yourself a tester yet? :P

5:53 AM
and shug his problem, not mine

Bob
@JourneymanGeek AD. server. on server 2003

@Bob work has a pair now

Bob
why not run NT4 while you're at it?

@Bob "We'll probably regret it later"
I PERSONALLY think its a terrible idea
and isn't likely to get anywhere
HOWEVER, considering my current plans and work scope. Meh.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek this is where you probably wanna CYA
document the potential issues, especially security-wise
though idk how receptive your boss will be to it

6:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek "I'm not payed enough to deal with that shit\"
tbf 2003 is a really good os, if it was still receiving security patches, it wouldn't be a big deal.

@Bob I am literally literally not touching it
lol
he tried 2008 I think
won't run on the rustbucket

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...if it's SATA...

I think my computer teacher will go crazy if she sees me using Windows on these PCs, they're supposed to be running Ubuntu. She doesn't know about WindowsToGo.

Bob
@satibel noooooooooooooope
doesn't even support NLA

@Bob has sata, pata and SCSI...

Bob
6:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek I meant, it belongs in the 2008 era

6:31 AM
probably... wait, that's 10 years ago? I'm old '-'

6:42 AM
@Bob could be early sata
Quite a lot of XP/Vista era XP machines had em

7:08 AM
@Bob IIRC one of our file servers for a shared network drive at work is based on server 2003, and their "backup" plan is fairly dodgy too
I think their backups are incremental tape that's done fairly irregularly (weekly?) and not ever tested to be sure that it works
although the rest of the enterprise is on Server 2012 (or R2)

Huh, this is interesting... microcorruption.com/login
(cc @bob)

Bob
@allquixotic ... "shared network drive" => SMBv1?
WELP.
@Rahul2001 o.O
remind me tomorrow :P
@Rahul2001 I wonder if it'll involve ROP :D

7:43 AM
How do you empty freaking credit balance in Google Voice?
I want to charge account with US dollars but I have to empty EURO credits first.
Yes!
Did it.

God, this teacher is berserk

morning

@Burgi 'lo

I launched Steam and started watching a trailer...
Either my CPU is done, or my cooler isn't doing anything at all.

ugh. People are talking about my namesake. SO CONFUSING!

@JourneymanGeek wait... namesake?

there's another guy with the same name here ;p

lol
I totally know what that's like

8:10 AM
Woohoo discuss.jsonapi.org/badges/44/… \o/ So proud :')

@BenN Ideally,you should have an authority which checks and certifies devices, and only those are approved for sale to the public.
Or at the very least, even if nothing can be done about the sales of the products, users should be made aware of the consequences of using non-certified devices.
Manufacturers can send their devices over with a small fee to get them tested, and developers can volunteered/be hired as required.
Perhaps major corporations would even encourage their employees to do testing.

Bob
@MichaelFrank how's your thermal paste?

@Rahul2001 problem isn't with initial secureification, its about keeping stuff up to date

@JourneymanGeek hm. Well, both, really

@MichaelFrank or your temp probe is crazy.

8:13 AM
TBH, if carefully designed, it is possible to create future-proof systems
I mean, making sure that products don't ship with vulnerabilities solves a (major) part of the problem

@Bob It was pretty dodgy tbh.... I reapplied it and the temps got better, but it's still cranking near 100 degrees under any small amount of load.
I'm wondering if the pump is gone and the water is just sorta passively cooling.

shameless plug:

Q: Why do Vipers use skids instead of wheels?

BurgiWhy do the Vipers in BattleStar Galactica use skids as landing gear instead of wheels? Did they use the skids when landing at airfields back in the colonies? I'm mostly interested in in-universe explanations but I would also be very interested in why the prop designers didn't go for wheels.

Bob
@MichaelFrank oh, water? you should be able to hear the pump. does it have enough water? it evaporates through the pipes over time

@Burgi Because they're landing in zero G and wheels wouldn't do anything?

Bob
Your analogy of his analogy is worse than the original analogy... On another topic, suggesting that Leibniz's law has anything to do with this is a major strawman, because it suggests that Pascal's argument applies exclusively to one fully specified definition of "god", yet that is evidently untrue. — Veedrac 6 hours ago

8:16 AM
@MichaelFrank but its not zero G

@Bob This is supposed to be a near-zero evap model. Corsair H80

Bob
when you have too many analogies
@MichaelFrank how old is it?
@Burgi if it's VTOL...

@Bob Not sure actually, atleast 3-4?
@Burgi They're landing on a spaceship... It's zero-G until they reach the airlock.
But a surface landing would obviously need to be VTOL like Bob suggested.

@Bob good point. we never see them taking off except from a launch tube

@Burgi The Raptor has skids as well, and we know they can VTOL.

8:20 AM
fair point

@Bob I think the pump must be dead... I might go dig out the stock cooler and see if I can stabilize the system. :|

@Rahul2001 that's why eal exists, but you might as well rob a bank with a suit and tie to buy a certified one.

@MichaelFrank the landing pods have artificial gravity

@satibel yeah well, which is why I'm thinking of a volunteer-based one

Bob
ugh
I have to edit (fix the grammar of) a 60 page doc
27k words o.O

8:22 AM
hm, do vipers do VTOL?

@JourneymanGeek i didn't think so

@Bob I used to have a software tool for that
@Burgi in outer space you could do with rail based launches and vectoring for slowing down and stopping

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?

I think I used to use bullfighter. Writely probably is the modern equivilent

@Bob shift f7 in MS Word iirc

Bob
8:26 AM
@Burgi not just grammar. word choice etc

ah

Bob
basically, make it flow in English

print it out and go somewhere quiet

Bob
@JourneymanGeek bullfighter looks... surprisingly relevant o.o
@Burgi can't track changes on paper :P
or not as easily anyway

8:29 AM
aaaand I threw away the stock cooler when we moved.
Dammit.

yes it will take a little longer but you won't get distracted with interwebs and you'll save your eyes

Bob
@Burgi small as my handwriting is, that's not gonna fit
I'll stick with the word processor :P

increase the linespacing before printing

The old way of compression, using smaller characters

Bob
also saves the trouble of typing it back in

8:41 AM
shrug

@Burgi I'd close it as too broad...

he is asking for a service/product though..?
and piracy

Well, metapiracy anyway

Hi

user226528
I hope everyone's alright today and nobody has been summoned by his workplace's human resources department.

Bob
@FleetCommand Did something happen?

user226528
@Bob Some stupid person who thought herself very smart pulled a verbal joke in my vicinity. I got called too.

Bob
o.o

Jokes are no laughing matter!
2

user226528
10:58 AM
You can say that again. This one very embarrassing.

anyone know why AWS would set my instance limit to 0 as soon as I stop my running instance?

@Orou have you run out of credit?
@FleetCommand can you fill us in on the "joke"?

user226528
@Burgi I can, if I wanted to torment you. Reading stupid things is a torture, you know.

@FleetCommand everyone loves a good car crash

have you met our customer service department? it can't be any worse than the crap they invent

user226528
11:05 AM
Alright.

@Burgi it's on the company card so I sure hope not!

user226528
We had a number of foreign guests and they were sitting in our guesthouse around the famous round table. We were debating. A translator was hired.

user226528
You know, to translate their language to English and back.

@Orou i suggest you check the billing, its almost always the cause of craziness

@FleetCommand ok, this is getting interesting...

user226528
11:08 AM
One of my colleges walks up to me and pretends to be talking to me, while pulling the listening and understanding test from the Big Bang Theory.

user226528
Immediately, four reveal themselves as knowing English.

@Burgi can't see anything unusual in billing... guess I'll just have to wait to hear back from customer support
guess I won't be doing any work on that server today >.>

@FleetCommand i don't know that test....

@OliverSalzburg it's a well known fact, that jokes are right wing propaganda

user226528
@Burgi You would say something shocking in a language that the third-party listeners claim don't know it. Their sudden shock would reveal whether they really know the language or not.

user226528
11:10 AM
In this case, she said something shocking in English.

and those guests complained?

user226528
Needless to say, nobody found it amusing.

what did she say?

Bob
@FleetCommand Knowing some words != being able to conduct a business conversation in the language.
And where you really don't want misunderstandings... yea, a good translator helps.
But some people don't get that :\

@tereško Convervatives have no sense of humour. Clearly it is left wing propaganda.

user226528
11:12 AM
@Burgi (Sigh!) Isn't it obvious already? The only shocking thing from TV. She said: "My shift's over and I am sick and tired or work. Let's do something fun. Let's have c****s."

Bob
Like... ok, you've now 'revealed' them. Now what?

not sure how that would not be shocking

Bob
@FleetCommand o.O I have no idea what "c****s" is supposed to mean

@Bob coitus

Bob
Oh.
So... fun HR meeting then?

user226528
11:14 AM
And when they registered shock, she pointed fingers and greeted them in English, as in "Ha! Busted!"

Bob
-_-

@FleetCommand did you immediate bundle her into the stationary cupboard and fulfil her request?

heh, how old is your co-worker? Mid Teens?
...
@Burgi now now
Tradition says its a broom closet.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek No. That's the tragedy.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek The former Iranian supreme leader once said "two things is colder than Ice [=very lame]: A child who acts like an elderly and an elderly who behaves like a child."

user226528
11:19 AM
Or wait... maybe that was the Saudi king who said that. Hmm... Unlikely. What do Saudi people know about ice?

thats racist! ;)

user226528
@Burgi It's regional linguistic observation. Arab's don't have ice metaphors.

user226528
Also, I didn't imply that they are superior or inferior because of not knowing about ice. So, no, it is not racist.

@JourneymanGeek are you saying that "everything is offensive" is actually a long running joke?

@tereško maybe.

11:25 AM
@FleetCommand take the bad joke at its face value and move on...

anyone wanna help me debug why i cant get my keyboard to work even in the bios?

user226528
@Burgi I have no idea how would that be.

@Petah it appears to be working fine...

no im typing this by bashing my head against the wall

i see

Bob
11:28 AM
@Petah does it work when connected to a different machine?

yea

wired or wireless?

ive tried 3 different keyboards too, all wired

USB or PS2?

usb only, there is no ps2 port
tried all the usb ports
mouse led lights up when plugged in, but keyboard wont do anything including things like capslock lights etc

Bob
@Petah do the other keyboards work?

does the mouse actually work?

no it didnt

USB ports are dead

:(

11:36 AM
@Petah using a USB hub?

nope

@Petah yeah. USB ports are probably dead
Perhaps due to power surge

12:18 PM
@FleetCommand So why did you get HRed? Surely they are not holding you responsible for what your coworker did?

i was wondering that

user226528
@DavidPostill When I was called in, they didn't know your second sentence as fact.

user226528
And I didn't talk a lot there. Her pride of her joke/test did everything for me.

user226528
By the time the session was ended, perhaps, they were wondering what I was doing there.

thats the best thing to do when HR is involved
do you think she'll get fired?

user226528
12:24 PM
I think not. Getting fired here only occurs when the damage done can be undone by the absence of the person... or when firing the person can definitely eliminate a risk that cannot be otherwise mitigated.

but if she offended important customers....

user226528
...she would definitely get fired then.

they must have been offended for HR to have got involved

user226528
Speaking from my experience here, that's not what has happened. In all they likelihood our foreign guests didn't come around to think the conversation was entirely for their benefit.

user226528
And, our equivalent of HR would get involved any time and anywhere the word c****s is so openly used.

user226528
12:30 PM
Damage prevention, instead of punishment, is part of their work.

was there damage to prevent?
or were the HR offended on behalf of the guests?

i think you should buy her a drink and ask her if she is still interested in doing the activity with you

user226528
@Burgi You are assuming that drinks are permitted in our country AND workplace, that I am not committed to someone else, and that I am in the least interested in the said activity, and more importantly, she might have meant what she said.

user226528
I tell you, the last one is not the case. As for the rest, I neither confirm nor deny.

12:33 PM
@FleetCommand i meant after work, obviously and you jumped to the conclusion that i meant alcohol. coffee is still a drink...

If someone invited me for a drink and then served me coffee, that would be the end of our relationship

@FleetCommand you seem to have given and ordinarily large amount of time to come up with that list of assumptions

user226528
@tereško ROFL! My dear colleague, I signed a contract covering all these. I tell you, the contract was far more comprehensive.

your HR has too much time

user226528
Do you know of an HR that does not?

12:44 PM
you are a slippery character @FleetCommand

user226528
I have a copy of Nero 2017 refusing to uninstall

@FleetCommand Have you tried Nero General CleanTool?

user226528
My first Google hits too.

@Burgi a cake?!

its for a shock campaign apparanetly

2:39 PM
Better than sex cake, also known as Is It Really Better Than Sex? Cake, Better than Robert Redford cake, or even Better than Best Cake is a cake consisting of a chocolate cake mix, of the maker's choosing, a moist center, and whipped cream covering the exterior. Some versions of the recipe are very similar to an upside-down cake. The cake's origins are unknown and recipes exist from the 1980s, but the recipe received a surge in popularity after Paula Deen featured the dessert on her series Paula's Home Cooking. The cake's moist center is typically created by inserting a fork into the cake several...

How much is the fine?
Also hmmm
Someone in china claiming large scale quantum comm
interesting, but.... not sure it's as secure as they claim lol
You have a bit, you don't know it's value. It's used in a computation, therefore it's value was decided. You read it, this finalises the value. Surely you can just re-do the encryption to put it back into the 1/0? state again?
or this 'you can't read it without changing it', that's not true either
reading it simply sets the value
but..... the 'end' user will then read it, and expect the value to be set. There's no way to decide if it's set, before reading it.... is there?

4:19 PM
Reading collapses the qubits into a classical state, destroying any entanglement

ok
can you test for the entanglement some how?
without destorying the data

I'm afraid I don't know much about quantum stuff, but I do know that everything is undoable except for collapse

> Instantaneous communication by means of quantum entanglement is actually impossible because neither side can manipulate the state of the entangled particles, they can only measure it (see No-communication theorem). This fact means that if you measure one particle you cannot infer anything meaningful about the observers measuring the other particle, except you know what state they will measure, or have already measured.
you don't even know if they've measured it
time to go to physics!

Bob
4:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek can you actually use onboard at the same time as discrete?

@BenN and suddenly it's just dawned on me
And this shows why simplifications of things can make things tricky.
Think not of a box containing a cat being dead or alive, but simply a box containing an animal
The 'start point' are constantly changing the animal, bear, cat, dog, elephant, etc
As they change it their end, it is also changed in the box, whereever the box is.
Once however the box is opened, the animal sticks. It is no longer entangled with the one at the 'start point' and so no longer changes.
Now, swap animal for one time encryption key

I wasn't aware that my PC could be at risk of getting malware while powered down
must be the new-fangled NSA stuff
(also. Defender has become as resource-intensive as the crap it replaced. I really should just disable it properly sometime)

@Bob I hear the NSA did something to some drives' firmware, so it's possible

@BenN Also those random cosmic flares could technically cause malware? :D

Oh man, that would be an amazing way to hack a system: directed radiation to flip the right bits to make a virus
It would also require a ridiculous amount of precision and luck, but maybe one day
Ah, here's the article I was thinking of
