Ok, so on SU mobile you have to touch the comment to get the uptick to show. No other site makes you do that AFAIK.

@Mazura ?

SU always seems like it's got some different stuff going on. It looks way different from other sites on mobile, where they all look about the same on a desktop.
@allquixotic I'm leaning towards by-design, why i dunno
Maybe they were tried of some dude upvoting every comment, or it was a bot. But if it was a bot I'd expect it to be system wide.

Bob
aww... was 30 off a repcap
and 13 mins too late :P

@Mazura I don't see any difference on Android :)

Bob
@Mazura SU and SF look identical
SO is the only odd one out
PCCG also looks identical

12:15 AM
Look at puzzling and then look at an SU page. SU is like way zoomed out.

Bob
Works on my machine

"works" or shows uptickers w/o having to touch them?

@Bob He's talking iOS app

Bob
@DavidPostill app or browser?
eh, if it's got anything to do with Safari, I'll blame Safari
Safari can go die
3

yea, Safari
Oh well, w/e. Time to go use my computer, superly. ;)

Bob
12:19 AM
Size looks fine to me
cbf logging in to check the comment upvote buttons
@Mazura It's not. Take some screenshots, open a bug question on Meta Stack Exchange
huh, cool, that link works now o.O

the exit poll suggests the tories won't get a majority
SNP have lost 1 seat so far..

12:55 AM
@JoeStavitsky It appears that an HTML(?) escape sequence got into your string. Replace &#039 with ' and it'll work (cc @Burgi)
Just got back from being out of town for a day, hence the late reply

i thought about saying your name 3 times to conjour you up but i wasn't sure what other beasties would be listening...
;P

Bob
@Burgi floof

Also huh, there's a bunch of politics on the starboard, did stuff happen today?

the UK had an election (result due at about 9am BST)
also the FBI guy threw trump under the bus

Ah yes, the Comey stuff. I was making waffles in a hotel while it was on the TV
I am not very good at waffle making

1:02 AM
apparently he had notes detailing his conversation with trump dating back to his first introduction to him with obama
hotels aren't great waffle making areas
why are you in a hotel?
why aren't you raiding the mini bar?

1. I'm not in a hotel currently, but I stayed overnight; it was a long drive

Bob
@Burgi $$$$$
I think that's enough digits

2. I can't legally drink

why aren't you chatting up chicks in the residents bar?
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE
NEWS FLASH! @BenN WAS HAVING A DIRTY MID-WEEK HOOKUP!!! MORE AT 10

Actually I didn't notice a bar of any kind at the place

1:04 AM
uh huh
more seriously, how long was the drive? you are upstate NY right?

Western Illinois
Just 3 hours, but had to get up early enough that driving the day of would have been unpleasant

nods
why is america so strict on drinking?
you have stuff backwards

> This was because of a campaign by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in the 1980s after a series of high-profile deaths of children caused by drunk drivers. They pressured lawmakers to step up police enforcement of drunk driving laws and raise the drinking age. Congress passed a law saying that federal highway funding would only be available to states with a drinking age of 21, so naturally all the states who were still at 18 (most of them at the time), raised theirs.

you can drive at 16 (when your hormones are in charge) and only drink at 21 (when the rest of the world has got bored with vomming in the bathroom)
they didn't think to increase the driving age or toughen the education?

Activist groups tend to get really locked into a means and then start missing the end

Bob
1:11 AM
@Burgi "toughen the education"? wait a minute, this is the US we're talking about here!
Severely lacking driver's ed and all.

shurg

Bob
(Though I hear it's state-dependent)

i heard that aussie driving is pretty bad as well

Bob
I'd not be entirely surprised.
Though it's more common to see people complaining that the rules (and tests) are too strict.

i used to work with an australian lady and her daughter had learnt to drive here but was visiting australia and was terrified on the roads
we have the safest roads in europe and they are planning on making the driving test stricter
you have to do a video course were you have to click the mouse when you see the hazard (you can't click constantly or click too early)

Bob
1:16 AM
Used to be required for P1 => P2 but now they've shifted it to L => P1

then there is a theory test of 80 questions

Bob
well, they're planning to in Nov this year
> What is the HPT?

The HPT is a computer-based touch screen test that measures your ability to recognise potentially dangerous situations on the road and respond appropriately.

thats it!

Bob
> The test uses film clips of real traffic situations. In each clip, you’ll be asked to respond by touching the screen, for example when you would slow down, overtake, or turn at an intersection.

There are 15 film clips in the test.

sounds about right

Bob
1:17 AM
Yea that's part of the testing here
DKT is what you need to get the L in the first place: rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/driver/tests/…
45 questions
an actual driving test with at ester for L => P1

and the practical recommends a minimum of 20 hours of lessons

Bob
@Burgi yea uh... we're required to drive 120 hours first (if under 25)
logbook and all

but in theory you can take your test after 1 hour of tution

Bob
I think 10h of professional lessons are recommended, and there's a 3-for-1 -- 1h of professional instruction = 3h of 'driving' in the logbook
and there's another bonus of like 20h for a 3h safe driving course
oh, it's also a min of 20h of night driving in that 120 total
@Burgi And there's another test to go from P2 => full: rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/driver/tests/…

they have an additional course which you can take after you've passed to get you used to motorways and adverse conditions but it is optional

Bob
1:21 AM
> The DQT is a touch screen, computer-based test. Its aim is to confirm that P2 drivers have sufficient knowledge and hazard perception skills, to ‘graduate’ to the full NSW driver licence.

There are two parts to the test:

Part 1 is a knowledge test that assesses your knowledge of road safety issues
Part 2 is a hazard perception test that assess your ability to recognise hazards and respond appropriately. It is based on the driving simulations that lead to the five most common crash types for new full licence holders in NSW.
> The DQT is therefore a bit like an advanced version of the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT), that you passed to get your learner licence, combined with the Hazard Perception Test (HPT), that you passed to get your P2 licence.

The DQT is however more challenging.
So, yea. The testing and requirements are pretty intense. min 1yr on L, 18 months on P1, 6 months on P2.
Now, I don't know if that actually makes for safer driving. But it's a lot of testing.

so can you remain on a P2 license forever?

Bob
@Burgi if you fail to pass the tests!
but there's restrictions on each provisional licence class such that no one really wants to stay on them

does it impose restrictions on you?
ah ok

Bob
max 90km/h for P1, 100km/h for P2
L used to be max 80 but now 90
some other things like 0 BAC limit
I think P1 can't carry more than 1 <25 passenger after dark
oh, and L can't drive without a supervising driver

in the UK provisional license holders can only drive while supervised by someone over 21 who has held a full license for 3 years and aren't allowed on motorways
oh and you can't tow anything and the vehicle must be under 3.5 tonnes

Bob
1:25 AM
@Burgi Yea, that's L here
except there's no restriction on "motorways" (wtf is a motorway)
but it's not recommended cause of the speed limit. 80's far too slow. even 90 is pretty slow.

3 lane highway with a max speed of 70 mph
its like an autobahn or american interstate
an intercity "fast" road route

Bob
@Burgi yea, similar here

iirc 70mph is roughly 120kph?

Bob
@Burgi that's the big freeways here yea
no technical restriction but really not recommended
then again the state I live in (NSW) has more restrictions than the others
Vic doesn't have a speed limit on provisional I think

btw in the UK on the motorway if you are sat at 70 you are either old, foregin or there is a police car nearby

Bob
1:28 AM
@Burgi yea uh. We actually follow speed limits here.

pfffft

Bob
Not everyone, of course. But most do.
And our speed limits are low.
It's annoying.

really?

Bob
I mean the limits are low*
having everyone actually agree to follow the same-ish speeds is nice :P

i had the impression you aussies were speed demons

Bob
1:30 AM
...not in my experience

you have the holden VXR...

Bob
@Burgi no towing for L, P1 can tow up to 250kg.

and the maloo pickup...

Bob
GVM is a class C restirction

the only restrictions in UK are on vehicle gross weight
motorcycles have different restrictions
when i was learning you could ride a 50cc bike after 2 hours of lessons
but you were restricted to "normal" roads and the bike had to be physically restricted to 35MPH
either electronically or mechanically
i think it has been increased to 75cc and 50mph now

Bob
1:34 AM
not sure about motorbike restrictions here but yea they're a different class
class C is up to 4.5t GVW

i can drive a vehicle up to 3.5 gross tonnes
in reality that is a standard commerical van

Bob
ya

or a something like a range rover towing a caravan

2:01 AM
nn

2:13 AM
facedesk
Work just sent me a form for being late for work. I forgot to tap in....
maaaaaan
Dystopian

Bob
2:30 AM
ow

@JourneymanGeek What's "tap in"?

Bob
@ThatREDACTEDGuy clock in
time tracking
stuff

@JourneymanGeek In that case just fill the form as "reason for being late: I wasn't, forgot to clock in, as witnessed by A, B, C and confirmed by BOSS".

3:03 AM
@BenN. here?

@ThatREDACTEDGuy apparently not
just for their records

Bob
so, uh
lxd installs a minimal debian
like, really minimal. ridiculously minimal.
it doesn't have man
D:<
oh yea

Hello!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I sorted the ip issue ... by ordering a new one, which worked. Meanwhile, they're still trying to figure out what to do with that support ticket that's apparently been sitting with their network guy (I swear it's a single person) for two days and counting with no news.
I've even said I don't care about a refund. I just want the thing either fixed or ongoing renew (of the broken IP address, not the server) cancelled.
But, nope, they're waiting to hear back from network.

The lenovo update utility appears to be trying to fetch information from a nonexistent domain facepalm

Bob
3:15 AM
(I even suggested trying a different IP address yesterday... would've made the damn thing shorter. But nope gotta wait to hear back from the aether)

Also, interestingly, when I ping google.com, it shows the ipv6 address, I distinctly remember it always showing ipv4 previously.
9 hours ago, by jokerdino
you would still be getting browser updates and other critical fixes
(I think I starred this by mistake while half-asleep. Sorry)

3:43 AM
@jokerdino 14.04.2 can be upgraded to 16 if I'm running liveboot?

4:01 AM
0_0
Chances are you don't have the space to. And you'd need to reboot, so you'd wipe any changes made...

@JourneymanGeek Persistence?

that could work but you'd essentially be storing a iso of the older version for no real reason, and running everything off the read/write storage....

@JourneymanGeek huh. Just asking because I cannot currently download the latest ISO

Bob
@Rahul2001 Depends at what time the persistent layer is mounted. It'll not go smoothly.
For one, you'll be running the old kernel unless you do a kexec on boot.
You'll also probably be running the old init
iirc 14 used upstart vs 16 using systemd
they do not mesh

4:15 AM
@Bob Hm, I'll just locate a cyber cafe to download the iso from then...

Bob
your initrd will likely be outdated too
they're fixable problems, mind, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth

@Bob Yes, got it, thanks :)

Bob
@Rahul2001 why can't you download it directly?
I mean, if it's a size issue, the upgrade isn't much smaller than a minimal iso

@Bob I'm travelling and am on a slow metered connection. I'm getting 8 KB/s on wget, chrome fails, and 12KiB/s on deluge

Bob
@Rahul2001 uhhhhh... I don't think apt upgrade would work there either -_-
or it'd still be terribly slow

4:18 AM
@Bob I would upgrade once I got home, use 14.0 for now

Bob
@Rahul2001 couldn't you download the ISO at home then?

But nevermind that, I'll locate a cyber cafe

Bob
it's basically s/upgrade/download/ :P
@Rahul2001 Any particular reason you want 16 right now?

@Bob I kinda need it right now, have the 14.0 ISO lying around, and don't want to re-install everything on 16

Bob
@Rahul2001 I mean, what did you need it for?
There might be other ways

4:20 AM
@Bob Eh, some scripting for a project that seems overly complicated on Windows with batch
Also, I've been meaning to learn bash properly for years

Bob
@Rahul2001 WSL?
@Rahul2001 Also, if you want, I can give you SSH access to a Ubuntu <version of your choice> server

@Bob Hm... perhaps

Bob
Though if you're on such a poor connection maybe mosh would be better

@Bob Thanks, but I need to run this stuff on my own PC for now :)
Also, yeah, poor connection

Bob
@Rahul2001 eh, lemme know if you ever want it

@JoeStavitsky It appears that an HTML(?) escape sequence got into your string. Replace &#039 with ' and it'll work (cc @Burgi)
I'm going to zzz now, please post on the main site if you have further questions :)

2 hours later…
6:29 AM
morning

7:18 AM
@Rahul2001 I don't think so..
At that point, you might as well make 16.04 live boot.

Bob
@jokerdino You kinda-sorta can. Linux is flexible like that. I mean, at the very least, you can do it by 'booting' into a different root, treating the original live as if it were an initrd.
But, yea. Can doesn't mean you should. And you'd need a similar download anyway :P

is it even worth it lol

Bob
@jokerdino only for curiosity :P

fair enough haha

Bob
actually I did something similar on a vps before, where it was worth it
granted, the original root was writable, I only kexec'd the kernel
\o/ got my public 'dropbox' up :P

7:24 AM
what crap can I upload?

Bob
and yes everyone has up/download permissions and it's all public. please don't chuck anything illegal up there, and don't expect files to stay forever, but use it if you feel like it *shrug*
I mostly did it so I could have an easy way to transfer files between not-trustworthy servers :P
proper user accounts too but the public one was just to experiment

bookmarked for later

Bob
lol
it's not much use to anyone with actual dropbox/onedrive/etc accounts
I just cbf'd typing my actual password in some places

cbf? lol

Bob
@Avery did you run a url shortener?

7:39 AM
morning

Bob
'lo

'hi

'no

@Bob amusingly I could have used that a few hours ago ;p

7:57 AM
@Bob OMG! its full of fox porn!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm? o.O

your floofy fox

8:15 AM
oh god!
have you seen the corbyn high five fail?

Oh look! @Burgi is attempting to get starred again! Hah! Loser!

wail The USB3 pins in this new and expensive flash drive are bent, that's why it isn't getting detected :(

i might have to flag my own image, its too cringey to keep watching

So when you enter information into a PDF in Chrome and then you print it, it prints the PDF, without your information in it
Awesome

8:29 AM
@OliverSalzburg haha

8:42 AM
Hm, I'm fixing a USB drive with my sister's hairclip. My life...

@Burgi dammit, I got baited, this folder is empty, I am somewhat disapointed

@Burgi lol
@Rahul2001 how new?

@satibel lmao
@djsmiley2k 2 weeks. The one I was talking about that day? And you said it might be drivers?

oh that weird one :(

This also explains why it only malfunctions in the USB 3 port

9:04 AM
@Bob why?

@Rahul2001 it's got 2 seperate ports
?

Reporter: Why does the earth go around the sun?

Trump: Wow - great question, great question. It's... certainly something that is important to a lot of people - especially the American people. Very important. I would say maybe it's almost as important as bringing back jobs - good American jobs - to this great, great nation. And you know, it's not an easy thing to do - Obama spent 8 years giving away our jobs in coal and things to China, and now look where we are! Now the Chinese are laughing at us - they are, believe me. But I have a plan to bring back every job that Obama stole from you;
@djsmiley2k The USB 3 pins are bent

@Rahul2001 I thought usb3 was back compatible
but I've not looked at an actual pin layout

@djsmiley2k It should be, idk what's up

@Rahul2001 that's how I write my answers to questions I have no clue about.

9:07 AM
'....strong and stable....'
yeah that worked xD

it was working until the terror attacks

:D
thanks terrorism!

@jokerdino lol

@jokerdino Are you also a politician?

Bob
@Avery wondering what you used

9:23 AM
@Bob own terrible ~3 year old script

yall make me sad
if ur using a url shortern for something just like chat then fine
if something is related but disabled, should it be in the tags

@djsmiley2k Says the guy who is shortening words

@OliverSalzburg lol
tis chat.

i found out last night that the 3310 isn't the best selling phone of all time

@Burgi Which one is?

9:30 AM
the 1100

Nokia 1100?
ewww that thing

Bob
@Avery ah.

yeah, it sold better in north america and africa

Bob
@djsmiley2k sad why?

@Burgi Was about to say was it India or somewhere
@Bob link shortners make archiving things hard work

9:33 AM
apparently the 3310 had terrible sales in US

Bob
@djsmiley2k meh, they're easier to remember and type

its not even in the top 10
This is a list of best-selling mobile phones. == Top-selling mobile phones == == Annual best-selling handsets == Note: The years represent when the phones were released into the market, not the number sold in that particular year. The number sold represents how many units were sold throughout its whole lifetime. The first cell phone was produced by Motorola. Since then there have been produced around 17.37 billion mobile phones. === 1992 === Motorola Personal Phone, 8 million sold Nokia 101.5 million sold === 1996 === Motorola StarTAC, 60 million sold Nokia 1610, ? sold100 million ...

Bob
@Burgi probably cause the US had their CDMA

yeah i think it was the weird network thing
i had a RAZR v3

@Bob it's OS but it's prob better to write your own
@Burgi yeah, but it was and still is huge in EU and mea
I had a 1110 and a 6600
6600 was huge. Like, huge,

9:48 AM
not in the UK, the blackberry and iphone were released at the same time

Bob
@Avery was debating between DIY and finding a good one :P

@djsmiley2k wannabe

you should have an ironic hipster URL shortener with a super long domain name like:
thisismyironicurlshortener.org.uk

@Burgi bonus points for getting curl in the name ;p

9:57 AM
heh!

url lengthener yep

ucishortenerlongenerfefe.org.uk
