Speaking of aux power cables, CPU power is 8+4-pin on this motherboard; documentation states that the 4-pin is optional but the 8-pin connector must be attached.

How hard did you find it to attach the CPU power cables?

For me, it took a significant amount of dexterity to fully seat the connectors because they're located on the top left of the Crosshair VI Extreme motherboard and per best cable management practice, they had to be run through the back of the case behind the board.

There was a bit of slack left in the cable so it's definitely not taut but it felt like it was.

...so, there's a bit of a concern that came up while installing the screw pegs into the backplate:

Somehow, I put in one of the four in reverse and partially damaged the screw threads. There were not stripped, only bent, and I backed out before any metal had actually separated from either part (less than halfway). However, I'm concerned this might impact the long-term integrity of the backplate or pegs.

What are the chances the threads will fail completely during normal use, transportation, or maintenance (including the occasional removal of the waterblock)?

I doubt failure would occur during the intended service of Astaroth (the amount of force needed to completely break the entire thread is quite high, well beyond what is needed to secure the waterblock) but I'm not entirely sure. Your thoughts?

I backed out and installed it correctly without much fuss.

Note that the backplate is made of stronger metal, and the threads on the backplate side are coarser so it probably suffered less damage than the standoff threads.

if the track of the thread is deformed it's more likely to prevent the thread being able to rotate and lock it in place

Now, the backplate is made of metal that isn't as malleable (apparently cast iron) as the standoff metal, so I seriously doubt the backplate thread suffered any significant damage. The standoff threads probably yielded a bit.

There was no abnormal friction or resistance when the standoff was properly installed into that thread.

The standoff piece is trivial to replace (it's part of an inexpensive retention kit), but not the backplate (would probably need to call ASUS to order a replacement part).

I doubt the backplate suffered any real damage.

Besides, it's designed to withstand much heavier tower coolers. A CLLC waterblock is nothing compared to that.

So... I was doing some FurMark testing a bit earlier and the VRM read some 89° C at peak. This was on the graphics card's secondary (slave) BIOS with the power target set at the maximum 127% (~355 W) – is this cause for concern?

Intel's also got more experience integrating giant high bandwidth cache on-die (eDRAM) and frankly after they cut ties with Nvidia there was only one other way they were going to get competitive on-chip graphics
