@Bob lol
On one hand, I want to spread the word, but on the other hand, I don't want survey results to be thrown off by a biased audience.
Some bias is inevitable but I'm hoping to get an idea on where the gaming community stands on this controversial topic.
The AAA market is stagnating while the indie scene has seen tremendous growth in recent years.

1:11 AM
@bwDraco more that the basic tools that you need to make a game are cheaper, as is dev hardware and communication tools
You can set up a studio across dozens of locations with minimal cost

It's the labor behind the content that's expensive.

hah
Having worked in a studio? Chaps are not paid enough for the work they do.

@JourneymanGeek Yup. I hear people say that a lot.

And there's a very different... wassname...

When content quality standards are lower, you can make a game very cheaply these days, thanks to cheap and readily accessible development tools. That's why the indie segment is flourishing.

1:13 AM
Its not about content quality
indie games are about gameplay

Exactly.

AAA games are almost cinematic.

^ This.

and a unfinished AAA game is a disaster - think Arkham Knight.
an unfinished indie game is... early release.

If you think I should link to the Twitter poll anyway, let me know.

1:15 AM
There's exceptions of course
eh, do it

Would you be willing to pay $80 instead of $60 for a #videogame if it meant avoiding #microtransactions (MTX) and #lootboxes? #monetization

@bwDraco you kinda do it with deluxe editions.
ODDLY, I'm happier paying for season passes than microtransactions and a dozen small cosmetic features
with AOM, I bought an agent pack but not say, skin packs.
So, PERSONALLY, I wouldn't spend money on microtransactions, lootboxes and "cheaty" things
I'd spend money on content
(yes, it is more nuanced than your poll ;p)

The Twitter Polls feature isn't as feature-rich as I'd like it to be. This is the first time I've used it.
If you can, spread the word, avoiding bias where possible - I'd really like to see the community at large weigh in.
In a world where consumer spending power is limited and AAA video games are costing more than ever to make, how do you make enough money to break even, let alone turn a profit? Video game monetization is a Hard Problem™.

Three years a Super User:
It's been a great three years :)

\o/
@BenN were you anywhere before on the network?

On Stack Overflow a tiny bit, but I really got into SE because of SU
TBH one of the main reasons I started getting involved in SU was that I was looking for more review queues to work :D
Haven't been doing supermuch reviewing lately, though; college takes a lot of time

> I was looking for more review queues to work
0_0
whyyyyyy?

Not sure; when I gained the review privilege on SO I would religiously do my 20 Triage every day
It was really fun for some reason

ahh
oddly I consider review audits a turnoff

2:07 AM
The poorly selected ones are kinda lame, yeah

I basically do audits cause the number bothers me (which amusingly enough went away) and for badges (and I have all the easy ones)

Hello!

user226528
Hi

user226528
> We discovered serious weaknesses in WPA2, a protocol that secures all modern protected Wi-Fi networks. An attacker within range of a victim can exploit these weaknesses using key reinstallation attacks (KRACKs). Concretely, attackers can use this novel attack technique to read information that was previously assumed to be safely encrypted. This can be abused to steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, chat messages, emails, photos, and so on.

user226528
Not if they are sent over HTTPS

6:22 AM
All official 14.1 builds built after this tweet have been patched for KRACK.
LineageOS has patched it out - will be taking the updates as soon as they come out.

Bob
*turns on VPN*
I should probably put the wireless network at home on a separate VLAN too
though apparently patching the AP is enough... but I don't really want to deal with a ddwrt update :\
then again, home is probably safe
@allquixotic You'll prolly see patches "in a few weeks" => apple.stackexchange.com/questions/302360/…
and I'm expecting it to be in the Nov patch level for Android... dammit gonna have to flash again

@Bob Already using SSH tunneling on the main laptop - might not do this everywhere.

Bob
6:39 AM
@bwDraco eh, I do that at work, but it's generally not great so I'm not gonna do it elsewhere
SOCKS doesn't really work with UDP
and AFAICT it doesn't cope too well with multiple streams/connections

Ya. It's generally only used as a stopgap.
All of my active devices are configured to allow for SOCKS through one of my servers but I don't like using it.

Bob
I have a VPN client on my phone, though that was mostly for public wifi
meh
most sites I visit run through HTTPS anyway
this is more likely to be used as part of a targeted attack, not general public scanning

morning

also someone needs to be near enough to do it

8:51 AM
fracking IT company killed off all my tabs :(

9:28 AM
Anyone know where to find krack-all-zero-tk.py i need it to know if my 802.1X is affected by this

Someone somewhere does.

did you google it?

user226528
10:00 AM
@Burgi How is that even possible?

@djsmiley2k yea can't find it anywhere i will assume my WPA2-EAP network is affected

it's a client side bug
so if you have an effected client, you are effected.

user226528
@Neil Did you say WPA2-EAP? Can EAP be affected?

user226528
I don't think so.

@FleetCommand says it right here. blog.mojonetworks.com/wpa2-vulnerability

10:08 AM
@FleetCommand i had two browser windows open, they closed the one with all my tabs in it and reopened the single tab window multiple times, annihilating the previous session cache

@FleetCommand and on their site krackattacks.com

@Burgi autoreopening tabs != bookmarks

Bob
@djsmiley2k It's a standards bug. If you have a standards-compliant client, you are affected.

also, history?

Bob
Also, I've seen some people say that patching just the AP end is enough to prevent exploitation. Not sure how true it is.

user226528
10:11 AM
@Neil Yeah. That's where I read about it. But I don't find a mention of EAP there. Searching gives no results

@JourneymanGeek history is intact but i can't remember all 900 tabs

user226528
@Burgi Nine hundred tabs?! I don't remember what was the last I opened nine.

@FleetCommand n00b ;)

@FleetCommand people are weird
they think it helps them some how

Bob
10:13 AM
I should probably close some

I got 5 tabs plus 6 pinned
then another window with 3

user226528
Yeah. I don't pin tabs anymore. Bookmarking them is fine. But back when I did pin tabs, I put it up to 13 tabs open max.

i pin stuff I keep open, like this chat
gmail, hackaday,slashdot,bbc,el reg.

user226528
I mean i don't put my eggs in a basket that a power outage can tip over.

oh nothing in my browser is that important

Bob
10:16 AM
robust session restore :)

@FleetCommand do you have an electric egg holder?

user226528
Well, in my browser, there are a lot of important things.

browsers are the wild west of computing
I don't trust em as far as I could throw em

user226528
@Burgi Of course I do. What kind rock do you think I am from?

o.O
lol :)

10:17 AM
what is a electric egg holder?!
:D

user226528
You cook eggs and then put there until you want to eat it, so that is not cold and not smelly.

user226528
Cooked eggs tend to get smelly.

o_O
Well this got weird fast.

user226528
LOL. I am pulling your leg. ;)

user226528
Someone, please, ask about electric leg puller!

user226528
10:19 AM
ROFL!

Bob
urk, I need a haircut

user226528
Also, cooked eggs are actually called "coddled eggs".

@FleetCommand Dear Fleet Command, are you ready to hear the word of our Lord and Savior, the Eletric Leg Puller?

user226528
Say one more creepy thing like that and I will put an ignore flag on you.

10:25 AM
"One more creepy thing like that"

user226528
LOL

lol why is one of the flags for cisco's NTP 'insane'

user226528
10:48 AM
It is the digital equivalent of a booby trap

AND IF THIS JUST KEEPS GOING THIS WAY I MIGHT, BREAK SOMETHING TONIGHT.

Any one know what windows update patches the krack exploit need an update file for windows 7

user226528
11:03 AM
@Neil I posted a link to a The Verge article above. I think it mentioned the patch name.

@FleetCommand can you relink it

@FleetCommand ghess this must be it stays nothing about a wifi vulnerability being fixed in it

11:22 AM

user226528
12:25 PM
What? How is that even possible?

@FleetCommand ?

user226528
Didn't YOU generate the webtier?

yes
and the hostname given on the package is the same as the machine it's generated for
the install is failing with the fact that the IP it resolves to...... is an ip
:/
or something about it not being equal to local host.

If you hang out on Meta Stack Overflow, you may have noticed news from time to time about A/B tests of various features here at Stack Overflow. We use A/B testing to compare a new version to a baseline for a design, a machine learning model, or practically any feature of what we do here at Stack Overflow; these tests are part of our decision-making process. Which version of a button, predictive model, or ad is better? We don’t have to guess blindly, but instead we can use tests as part of our decision-making toolkit. …

Q: Cant find Thinkpad x230 keyboard layout

mrpinkI bought the used x230, for cheap in Austria. After peeling of the keyboard stickers that came with the laptop, what I thought was a Swiss keyboard turned out to be something else I cannot find. It matches neither the French nor Belgian layouts too. Anybody with insight into the same?

boy that's weird

/me cries
a fun load of keyboard layouts

yep, none of those match

weird

1:59 PM
I always make my prefix to be this color in my linux
Then I can find my input in the black command window

@FleetCommand we hacked it \o/
we had to add a entry to hosts file, using the fqdn :/

But can we make a same color in my Powershell?

@yode i'd ask on main site, it's a good question

Oh, where is the link?
I have not searched it just..

2:03 PM
Sorry my English, I thought you have asked..
Ok, wait a monent

Q: How to colorize the Powershell prefix

yodeI always make my prefix to be this color in my linux Then I can find my input in the black command window. But can we make a same color in my Powershell?

summoning @BenN ^
or should it be david, gah i forget

no, BenN is Mr. PowerShell

Bob
@allquixotic the N stands for PowerShell

2:19 PM
I have no one question about PowerShell stuck he untill now..
My English too bad, too lack of book to learn PowerShell in our country now still
Hard to read your those English

@allquixotic Your answer is possibly wrong BTW ;p

A: How to colorize the Powershell prefix

Bob PowerShell prompts What you want to do is customise the prompt. The default prompt in PowerShell 3.0 and newer is: function prompt { "PS $($executionContext.SessionState.Path.CurrentLocation)$('>' * ($nestedPromptLevel + 1)) " } Colour escape sequences Now, Windows 10 supports...

sorry @BenN :P

@JourneymanGeek I'm sorry, but I downvoted your answer. I disagree. The "QWERTZ" is accurate, yes, but all the other special keys on the keyboard are in the wrong place or don't even exist in the German QWERTZ keyboard layouts (and the other QWERTZ based layouts; I already looked at them all) compared to the original screenshot.
It's like someone took a standard French AZERTY keyboard and moved the letters to be in the QWERTZ layout.

Bob
hm... only ~8 hours till UTC midnight
*prays for HNQ* :P

2:52 PM
Basically the keys (the actual symbols on each key) are 100% from the French AZERTY layout but the A-Z keys (as well as some of the punctuation) are arranged like the German QWERTZ layout. When he rearranged the keycaps to the AZERTY layout, it's literally the standard French keyboard.

OK this is fucked up
the American healthcare system is collapsing under its own weight

cept the indenting was so extreme.... and it had a stupid Facebook like 'single column layout' so within 2 quotes you couldn't read the text anymore.

this year our company's healthcare offerings are TWICE the cost of last year's

We're getting free flu jabs \o/ (I don't want it)

at a doubling year/year rate, healthcare will cost 100% of my salary in 3 years

@allquixotic move to canada

4:05 PM
@djsmiley2k as someone who's overweight (but not choosing to be, of course) I find that extremely offensive and ignorant of the actual issues at hand; I'd recommend you watch this video starting at 38:42 (linked as such here) about the current healthcare crisis in the US and specifically about a recent executive order.
2
that said I'll disengage from this conversation to prevent it from becoming a flame war; but boy did that make me want to throw things

@allquixotic if you are referring to ACA, then that's how it wold seem to be intended
I think the plan was "ok, lets make it crash and then we will be able to actually make a good version"

@djsmiley2k That's not nice.

I have heard for few years now, that it would implode in 2018
:40598866 you mean the "fat acceptance" crazies?

hello everyone!

It's under control.

4:09 PM
so what's the story with 1800 tabs?

why not 1800 tabs?

it kills the ram
and swap file

maybe in chrome

@Hakase link?

4:16 PM
hmm ... @Bob is doing the internet wrong

idk maybe he's the only one doing it right

@tereško disagree

if you do research, lots of tabs is the expected result

its only chrome users that freak out with more than 3 tabs

sure, when it is 50-80, but not "almost 2000"

4:18 PM
i had 800 before the IT company killed my tab session this morning

maybe it was a wild outbreak of popup scam site forkbomb

... reminds me of highschool pranks

:P

ye we didn't have computers in school powerful enough to tell if it was a prank or just normal operating mode

bullshit
I was doing shit like that on i486

4:21 PM
there is apparently a very bad combination of hardware and windows xp
there was like 256mb ram and some refurbished no-name hard drive in each box
8-9 minutes booting time
and then it heats up for another 15 minutes when opening ms word

sounds like your school was lacking anyone who actually could install OS

i never had that issue with XP

it was weird going from a pentium 2 with win98 to that in school and feeling it was overall slower

@Burgi If they did it to me, there would be new openings in the IT team due to sand and unforeseen events.

the computers were bought in bulk, from a lowest bidder, and you can imagine where they came from

4:23 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy i am devastated

@Burgi I have a backup file of my Firefox tabs. BECAUSE MAH TABS!!!
@Burgi If you use the tabgroups addon, you can recover them. That's what I did once.

@ThatBrazilianGuy it was too late, they had refreshed the session about 5 times before i got my PC back

Oh, the memories.
I mean, I have memories of something similar. I just don't know where from or how, because I blocked it.

@ThatBrazilianGuy i might set that up

4:27 PM
@Burgi Unfortunately, the addon author abandoned the extension because "legacy addons bla blah blah"

4:44 PM
sorry you took it personally @allquixotic it wasn't meant to be so
i'm overweight too.

It's okay, but it's important to realize that obesity is widespread in the US and using this sort of language can very easily be read as offensive.

people need to grow thicker skin
something something and you all have guns o_O

lol
As much as I don't like flagging stuff, this one crossed the line when allq said it strongly offended him.

don't flag stuff because it offends someone else...
that's...... a silly path to walk down

I actually did feel a bit offended myself.
I first thought it was funny, then realized that it was insulting.

4:49 PM
i still think it was funny :/
Maybe it's a brit thing

Just be careful about what you say in the future. I have nothing against you.

meh
i don't get it
so i'll continue to be me :/

For the same reason @Avery insists on being referred to as female. We do not insult LGBT or other minorities here. We respect their wishes.
Alright then, got stuff to do.

So what do we refer to overweight people as? :/

@tereško body positivity is not craziness.

4:54 PM
rofl

there's a line
if you're healthy, then it's all good
I'm about 80% healthy

lol

@djsmiley2k I have to agree with that. I purposefully didn't flag it because I didn't think it deserved any sort of moderator handling, primarily because I don't think you intended to offend me. I took intent into account when deciding not to flag.

@allquixotic Move to Brazil and get free health care with just a few months of waiting time! \o/

@ThatBrazilianGuy that's not much longer than the 4 weeks (in excruciating pain and taking terrible drugs that barely took the edge off of it) that my mom had to wait to get life-saving neck surgery
The problem we're seeing here is that the "same" health services -- exact same procedures, same diagnosis, same tests, same quality of care -- is increasing in cost exponentially from the source of whoever sets the prices for the care.
So of course insurance premiums will balloon, because when you make a claim on your insurance and ask the insurance provider to pay, they have to pay ballooning costs.

5:05 PM
@allquixotic Yeah. Well. Months is just for a regular visit to the doctor. For surgery it could be even more or even a few years.

Combine that with stagnating wages and basically, everyone will be reserving half of their yearly income (or more) for healthcare in just a few short years, and living in hovels to compensate; or else they simply won't have healthcare and declare bankruptcy if they ever need serious treatment

> simply won't have healthcare
My current "strategy".
To be honest, years ago the private health sector was expensive but with much, much better quality.
Shiny new clinic rooms, almost no waiting time, you felt the difference. Nowadays it's more or less the same level of service.

What I don't understand is why are the same procedures increasing in cost in the US at about 10 times faster than the rate of inflation? Who or what is responsible? Where is the money going?
If it cost (to throw out a number) $3000 for gall bladder surgery in 2005, why would it now cost $15000 when per inflation it should only be about $3500? Who's keeping the remaining $11500?

Not that everything is falling apart. In fact, there is a good variation in the state of public health that I have experienced.

Is the surgery better? No. Are the doctors nicer? No. Is your chance of survival better No.
@ThatBrazilianGuy blah

5:13 PM
...speaking of the public sector falling apart: my mouse broke. I went to get a new one. "We have none".
You can buy generic, good-enough-for-general-use mice FOR TWO DOLLARS!

lol
my keyboard broke last night

So I have a mouse that clicks, but doesn't drag =/

MouseKeys?

!!google MouseKeys
Oh. API blocked. Right.

so about a 10% error rate, not bad :P
what's that, 1 sigma?

Surface book 2 is out -- apparently it's the thinnest GTX 1060 out there, which is nice, and tempting, but mehhh

@allquixotic Yup, I saw that. Surprise announcement, too.

not that I can afford to buy anything over the next year with my healthcare costs skyrocketing

:(
Damn Trump.
Oct 13 at 17:40, by bwDraco
I'm getting sick and tired of President Trump trying to strong-arm Congress into doing his bidding.

@Avery what a marketing-friendly name for people who are campaigning to prevent doctors from saying, that obesity cases heart problems and other complications

5:47 PM
@tereško oh it's great to get people to hate who they are and how they look, that surely doesn't cause complications.
And thing is...
Think for yourself, not for others.
If someone is happier looking the way they are but looking that way will cause complications to them, and if they're aware of the complications but don't mind them, then just... stop.

HAMMERTIME!

Stop thinking about that person.

that's not how it works - if there are crazy people petitioning governments and medical institutions, I am thinking for myself
if you weight 200kg, then it is a problem
and no amount of "beautiful at any size" will change it
and it is not just problem for the obese person, but for everyone else, who is paying in the shared health insurance pool

@tereško you might not enjoy that person's look, but they might, and their opinion matters more in that case.
Stop trying to help people who don't want (or maybe even need) to be helped.

I don't give a fuck about what they think
what I do care is that I (just like many others) am paying fore their bypass surgery
