@Burgi aussie rules. Aka full contact rugby...

i feel too wide awake to sleep :(
i'll go make tea and toast and see if things improve
there's a giant stack of tamper evident stickers on my desk

are people tampering with your desk?
I don't have a desk
I kinda am clearing out a desk full of junk and bunch of us are hotdesking
some of this shit is wierd

o.O
Pretty interesting breakdown of low-level changes and optimisations in newer CPU generations.
"the Skylake" reads so weirdly
@Bob for when you need to squeeze that last bit of performance out of your supercomputer cluster? ;)
Gosh. Now consumer routers have insanely large manuals.
@bwDraco Death to quick start manuals. LONG LIVE TOMES OF KNOWLEDGE!
00:51
Ordered a Nighthawk X4S a bit earlier today.
This is a huge step up from that E2500 we currently have.
We have just moved to a new house (I think it's okay to talk about it after the fact) and the ISP technician will be here tomorrow for installation.
Bob
Bob
@Aibobot Ha. It's just interesting to know how each CPU arch changes things, and the perf impacts they have.
We'll have to use the E2500 for the next couple of days but it can't support the upgraded (100 Mbps) connection we're getting.
Also, I fear that my current modem (Arris SURFboard SB6141) may not be able to get consistent 100 Mbps throughput due to it being an 8-channel model.
I don't want to have to go out and get an SB6190 (another $120).
(SB6190 is a 32-channel modem)
@bwDraco unless you link the actual address, its probably mostly fine
I've made it a policy to not disclose location information more fine-grained than the city I live in (New York City).
@Bob makes me miss the old ars technica cpu articles
01:01
100 Mbps is the maximum speed supported by Time Warner Cable/Spectrum on the SB6141.
lol. Ticket came in... for a detached ctrl key on a desktop keyboard
2
Least they still have it. Wouldn't want someone losing control
(I can hear the groans from here. Thank ya, thank ya, and remember to tip the waiter, not the cows)
Gosh. Tethering is a huge power drain for my phone.
sure it is
running wifi + near constant network connectivity + screen
I have no wireline Internet service right now and have to tether. I have more than enough data right now, though.
Sep 19 at 21:48, by bwDraco
(holds for any cellular device, though, as the Wi-Fi radio needs to run at full power continuously to maintain the hotspot)
I've done that
ran an office off a smartphone, actually ;p
01:07
I've used well under 1 GB of data despite mostly normal browsing, etc. on my laptop.
(that's about one full day's worth of browsing)
So, your thoughts on the router I've chosen?
hm. Its a flagship so it should be fine
and its not a dlink
I've wanted to set every dlink I've owned on fire
I feel like I 'outgrown' consumer gear tho
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Eh, depends on the phone.
When seeing this I kind of miss not going to Spiel2016.
01:17
Nexus 5X seems to be better than most when tethering.
@Hennes Not really into hobby gaming...
Mostly surprised by the gifp set haul. As far as I know these are just the new versions.
@Bob indeed
@Bob previous generations that had much bigger generational improvements would be more interesting
01:33
Hmm. Printing from tray 1 is much faster than printing from tray 2 on my HP Officejet Pro 8630.
Boy, this thing is fast.
I have not printed a job single-sided from tray 1 before and haven't seen the printer blaze through a big document like this.
80 pages of mixed text and graphics (even pages of the Nighthawk X4S manual; manual duplexing) in just over five minutes. Wow.
15 pages per minute. That's well into laser territory!
Getting ready to print the odd pages...
For big jobs, I duplex manually because the autoduplexer slows down printing a lot.
...and it misfed partway through the second job. I'll have to reprint a large subset of pages :\
Reprinting from page 143...
(at least that's only 18 pages)
Bob
Bob
01:53
Uhm.
The point of a searchable PDF manual is that you can, ah... search it.
I just want a hard copy for reference.
Thankfully, these sorts of print jobs are very, very rare.
I've run >100 page jobs before with generally no issues, but manually duplexing is decidedly less reliable because pages are more likely to stick as they are fed into the paper path.
Now I gotta straighten out all the pages into a neat stack...
160 pages of documentation. Wow.
What is more surprising about this is that the estimated ink levels have not dropped appreciably.
I'm also surprised about the print quality.
The printer is officially rated for 21 ppm black, 16.5 ppm color (per ISO/IEC 24734). That it managed to actually come anywhere near these rated speeds in a real-world print job is absolutely amazing.
02:11
heh. I'd actually throw manuals I need often into my kindle ;)
As of now, the printer has 1636 pages on it.
Bob
Bob
@Aibobot I did that with a full tablet.
Kindle isn't great for manuals, IMO
Screen too small, and it relies too much on reflowing designed for novels, not reference material.
I've tended to rely on Android tablets for quick on-the-field reading.
Bob
Bob
Heck, it doesn't work too well with anything technical, reference or not.
@bwDraco Eh, my larger (10"+) tablets are all Windows.
@Bob I like it for text ._.
02:16
I haven't owned a tablet this large.
Bob
Bob
PDF readers have gotten better in Android recently, but still feel lacking.
I just use the official Adobe Acrobat Reader app.
Bob
Bob
@Aibobot But most manuals have images and other formatting (indentation, spacing, etc.) that isn't text.
yeah
Clearly I hardly ever read manuals ;)

1 hour later…

AARGH! Another high-speed memory card standard!
XQD, CFast, and now CFexpress?

If i had a tree for every notebook full of paper i printed, that i never read much of afterwards, i would live in a forest.
04:24
I was trying to give away some furnature, lady e-mails me, with all kinda questions. how big is it, what color, can i see more pictures, will it fit in my van (the ad says bring a Truck). Its free, either get it or stuff-off. I told her it would have to come apart with tools, and it weighs and etc. Eventually she is asking ME to do the work, because she got a divorce, i am thinking well then you got a divoce a bit too soon didnt ya :-)
oh yea you didnt need that slimeball , his money (looking for free stuff) or even comprehend the efforts he had ever made, that grass is soo much greener, on the other side of the fence, until you have to pick up the dog poop.

@qasdfdsaq seems like neither the S7 nor the Xperia X P let you set up a hotspot on 5 GHz
which means no ac :\

One last thing before I go to bed (it's 1:21 am and we have a long road ahead of us as we unpack and reorganize stuff after moving):
Jul 9 at 15:55, by bwDraco
@Ramhound NVIDIA's consumer chips are tuned almost purely for geometry. AMD puts more compute resources on their GPUs but that seems to hurt efficiency.
Jul 9 at 15:57, by bwDraco
AMD consumer cards have always had more compute resources than NVIDIA consumer cards at the expensive of geometry performance and power efficiency.
Jul 9 at 15:58, by bwDraco
AMD cards usually have have more compute GFLOPS for similar geometry performance.
Jul 9 at 16:07, by bwDraco
Until games make wider use of vendor-neutral GPU compute functionality (and PhysX is not vendor-neutral), NVIDIA's GPUs will continue to have a real-world advantage over AMD.
Your thoughts on the direction GPUs are going as more and more compute workloads are becoming GPU-accelerated?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I had to make sure this wasn't our favourite travel.se asker :P money.stackexchange.com/questions/71777/…
@bwDraco it is kind of strange and not fully understood by everyone, how nvidea , the ones who used thier GPU to do physx, choose also to offload some "other" efforts to the CPU (not the gpu quite the opposite of what your saying). But who is analising all this completly , when it would be so important?
In the compares of the renders with or without physx, where is the analisis of how much cpu is being utalised? We know some games have CHoked horribly when physX was going to the gpu, because that was the fix. we know nvidea made some offhanded official statements about thier use of (and better optomisation of) the CPU.
when using an AMD card, the physX is generally done in the CPU , i have never even seen any option in nivideas "soft" version of physx that works fine when using a AMD card. especially when you have a few extra cores of CPU that are boored.
erf
I would kill for a decent, multicursor text editor
ooh
ST is not blocked <3
05:39
Take some differences in reviewers methods of "power consumption" that reveals different results. One reviewer will be reading the "card" power, one reviewer reading the whole computer power from the wall, and one (OCD) reviewer who actually has the PCI power disconnected and metered, which provides the most data, but (from what i saw) can create some flaws in the analisis (like the anlisis that AMD was using to much PCI which they may have never done).
Myself i dont believe yet that the Total information , is yet known, although i did get quite an eyefull on the Render picture differences. still very hard to see any difference between the 2 brands when playing.

@Aibobot vscode is my go-to now :P
@Aibobot what would the other curser be used for? could you use an Overlay Ruler instead ?
Not too sure why my upstream speeds are this poor...
The downstream speeds are fantastic, though.

@Psycogeek Usually so you can type the same thing in multiple places/lines at once, I think
oh cloning tool :-)
dude told me to watch a few YouTube videos , to learn how to lay this carpet. One thing you notice about ANY how-to video on youtube, you cant make a good how-to AND make a good video at the same time :-)
plus there is no One method for many youtubes, many people have many different ideas as to what will work. judging by the carpet they are butting up against (thier last job) some of them ended up showing more of the What Not To Do :-)
the worst install i saw so far, was the most pleasing video to watch, How-To-Girl :-) basically screwed the whole job up, while offering up proper advice in words, was not as capable of putting the UMPH into the work.
I suspect (once again) the person i should be learning How-To from, does not make YouTubes.
06:03
@Aibobot You realize that Notepad++ can do that? Try holding the Alt key as you select text.
Usual YouTube, Dis here is da Foist time I dun this, and so I figure i would make a video , so ya'll can see me do this while i be all fascinated with it.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Meanwhile you assume he has Notepad++
Once i really be knowing what to do, and how to do it all proper like, then i wont make a video, because I am boored with doing it.
Bob
Bob
I actually stopped using NP++ a while back myself.
It's... so-so as a basic editor, but the whole thing feels unpolished.
And it's not particularly keyboard-friendly.
@Bob so what do you use in place of NP++?
Bob
Bob
06:17
35 mins ago, by Bob
@Aibobot vscode is my go-to now :P
At work I still occasionally encounter files that NP++ handles better (generally, those that aren't really text files...)
But I almost always use VSCode first now, and it fits into my workflow better.
I don't think I've even installed NP++ at home this time (OS installed ~April)
what if you were not "coding" but instead batch making, manuel html and xml (type) editing, and other simple stuff , of the level i do?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek To some extent, it's personal preference. IMO VSCode syntax highlighting and completion (and assorted things like indentation/formatting) just work better :P
NP++ had some HTML/XML formatting plugins but last time I tried they were all buggy/unmaintained/dead.
@Psycogeek btw, batch, HTML and XML definitely fall under "code editor" to me.
NP++ is more jack of all trades, master of none
Oh wait NP++ did get XML Tools at some point and it does work

@Bob Yeah, funny enough I recognize it from having seen it on someone's Mac
Lol @ Hetzner. They ask you for your email and a password to register for their management portal when you order. Next day they email you a completely different username and a randomly generated password. For an empty account with no orders associated -_-
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq too lazy to try to find a mod. doesn't really matter anyway
@qasdfdsaq I'm still waiting for ovh.ie to validate my account
@Bob Erf
Somehow through all these "We will email you once your order is confirmed" "We will email you once your account is set up" and "We will email you once your server is ready" messages, they've neglected to email me to ask for payment :-/
@Bob Yeah, same for me so far. Though I'll have to get round to it one day if I ever want to test >200Mbps LTE-CA
Erf, new Galaxy Tab S Pro available with double the RAM, so Core M3 with 8GB and 256GB SSD... Still paltry and pathetic :-( But dat amoled display... :-(
@Bob Well major irony
Order a server with SYS, having been an existing SYS & OVH & Kimsufi customer for nearly 10 years - ask for prepayment, then ask for ID and copy of payment card. Separately, other SYS order taking over 9+ days with still no ETA
Order a server with Hetzner, first time new customer, no payment or ID checks required.
Yup, Hetzner set up my server and haven't even asked me to pay yet
Now if only it wasn't double the damn latency of OVH :-(
09:14
didn't OVH get hacked massively 2 weeks ago?
wow i knew this code was snakey but i never thought i'd be able to refactor it down to 6 lines...

I am newb and wanted to do similar but short video of myself when traveling. Would it be hard?
10:30
its nice to be doing actual coding for a change
instead of the normal server managing, minion managing, front end crap and general crap
@Burgi It won't feel so nice if you are still coding at midnight (16 hours coding is not nice). I remember a couple of 24 hour+ sessions in my 20's - was pretty useless afterwards ...
true
but don't spoil the current buzz with reality
@Burgi Well enjoy it while it lasts :)

@Burgi But... Wasn't the olympics nearly two months ago?
Why a parade now?
Did it took them two months to get back from Brazil?
we had to wait for the paralympics to finish
@Burgi Ah. So you are not actually working. You just can't drive home?

@ThatBrazilianGuy yes that
@Burgi Hire an Über Copter and bill your boss.

@DavidPostill i may as well do work
@Burgi !!no

@ThatBrazilianGuy Oh dear. Now I really want to go and visit BR again.
To be honest the "sexy ladies everywhere" stereotype annoys me to the point of being mildly offensive.
There's an interesting documentary on how the international cinema sees Brazil
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol. It was you who used it!
And it's always "an idyllic dreamland with exuberant nature and party all the time and erotism in the air and... blah blah"
@DavidPostill I get a free pass for complaining and stereotyping. ;p
It's like when you mock your brother all the time but the moment someone else badmouths them, they got in trouble ;p
...besides, I was referencing the stereotype and the way (some) foreigners see Brazil, rather than endorsing it
It's a lame excuse subtle difference.
