I'm wondering about flagging the general case - someone posts "I have problem mit foobar.dll", A: "go to dlls-r-us.com";; this particular one was theme-related, where modifying/ResourceHackering a dll might be a valid solution

A: Remove command bar/folder band in Windows 8 explorer

cccahere it is: http://bit.ly/1NL4wd4 i've made a small change to it, it's based on the drakulaboy's dll which i found here: http://www.eightforums.com/customization/47663-windows-8-1-shellstyle-dll-auto-hide-command-bar.html just go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes(your theme folder)(aero is defau...

(Unrelatedly, can someone please inform my fingers that they should be hitting Copy instead of Paste when I want to duplicate something)
ahh, I hate those ;p
@bertieb I have a hammer... ;p
@JourneymanGeek Ah, the old negative reinforcement :D
Oh, for that, I have the rolled up newspaper
Arf!
Ah yes, that is just a gussied up link-only answer as you rightly point out
I got a bit caught-up hung up on the dll replacement bit to notice
and hm.
Annoying side effect of switching to velcro based cable ties (which I strongly recommend) is I have a fairly large bundle of recycled cable ties I have little use for ;p
00:10
Use them in that overhead control panel thing you said you definitely had the time and skills to make
:P
(I also wish I had those things to make that thing)
He said specifically
(store I go to uses them for theft prevention but they usually slip off. Its a nice meditative thing to undo them if you're REALLY bored, and need something mindless to do ;p)
Oh! You could use them to subdue civilians if you're trying to stay quiet during a heist
Or maybe I should take a break from Payday 2
lol
I'm playing shadow of mordor. Just finished picking up all the collectables for the second act ;p
00:29
good lord journeyman
I just made 12 pictures..
and 10 minutes...
<sigh>
I am nore sure eleventity trillion votes...woudl be worth but what the heck
I've head SoM is actually Not Bad™, is it worth a [Steam Sale] look?
@Ramhound: More importantly, you're not not the guy who told someone to RTFM. You Wrote the fine manual ;)
made two errors in my pictures....my editor quit because I couldn't pay him, it will have to do.
http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/men-claim-to-find-mystery-nazi-train-loaded-with-gold-and-treasure-in-poland-1.2525206 "Men claim to find mystery Nazi train loaded with gold and treasure in Poland" Geraldo
Rivera is headed over there now for the grand opening. :-)
If you do not know why that was supposed to be funny youtube.com/watch?v=P84OKTUx6LY this covers it.
00:53
44 minutes...later...
*c rys *
@Ramhound: excellent!
(Upvoted!)
If that doesn't answer the question, or at least be the manual, then I don't know what else to tell him :$
I am tempted to tell him to RTMICFM ( read the manual I created foolish mortal ) but instead will reward myself with curry and Killjoys
More useful than a comment tho!
Earned!
(I hope killjoys gets renewed. I love that show too much)
00:56
I suppose. Although I did link him to the solution also :$
SyFy has this weird habit of getting rid of good Science fiction shows and putting on well anything except science fiction or D grade movies.
@Ramhound: scifi's been having ...phases
I can't believe an actor god paid to "act" as he was falling to the earth in a shark from outer space.
also, killjoys are canadaian
which means the show is cheap to make.
Upset they killed of Heaven....Stargate Universe...Stargate SG1.....Continiume, Lost Girl....Stargate Atlantis....Eureka....
I could go on
00:58
Ooh Warehouse 13.
expanse has a decent chance of surviving, but its a bit of a halo series
and Haven not heaven.
warehouse 13 died of old age at the right time ;p
I don't disagree
but i loved that show.
SG1, well, had a good natural run. In fact, the fact it was long running prolly doomed atlantis and universe
00:59
good finalle unlike... well every other scifi show.
There's a bit of a unwritten rule..
basically 4-5 seasons is the 'maximum' length of a series before they run out of ideas.
Universe cliffhanger...Atlantis....Cliffhanger...Eureka ( closed the loop mehhe. )
B5 was written as a 5 season arc (which got squished to 4)
I hate those.
Fox is worse tho.
Babylon 5 ;p
01:00
oh nm
(Terminator TSCC? Single season, HUGE cliffhanger)
Continuum is ending with a half season
(love the show)
Granted Continuum isn't SiFy's choice
nor is Lost Girl but they could pick it up
They did that with the Warewolf/Ghost/Vampire but ended up not doing all the seasons
Oh, the british version was better, but it had some issues near the end.
(they should NOT have moved the setting from bristol)
wouldn't have made much sense. I liked the retcon with the vampire, for instance Humans is less interesting ( still love it ) because of its setting
It should be based in Redmond, Washington, and there should be Microsoft signs..
Humans was going to be a Microsoft tv Studio project, they eventually changed their plans, but still are involved in it
man i really need to replace this elite kyeboard but microsoft's newest model is smaller...
I have huge hands <sad face>
anyone have a good keyboard recomendation for sombody with large hands?
Suppose I should measure this keyboard, new one, might not be that small :$
01:32
@HackToHell forum.thewindowsclub.com/technology-news/… out of shear lazyness? or intended trickery. When seeing errors like "something happened" i would have to go with shear lazyness :-)
I don't disagree but lets be honest
Windows has NEVER really had descriptive BSOD error messages to begin with.
and I can from a business point of view actually justify the reason they lumped stuff into a "Something happened" error anyways. It basically comes down to the fact, in 2 years time, it won't matter if they have reached their goal of 400-500 million machines running Windows 10
Because the rest of the machines after 2 years will likely never be upgraded to Windows 10 and thus literally "something happened" errors messages won't even be seen.
So why spent hundreds of man hours to create more descriptive error messages when they won't be seen past 2-3 year mark.
You literally need a decoder ring to decode most windows errors messages anyways :$
and there are crasy people out there who can decode every bit of it. usually it doesnt help though because the Butterfies :-) something was flapping over there, and had little to do with the 3 hour analisis.
01:48
Yes; Of course; Anyways i am sure those "something happened" errors generate an error log
What has worked though is when everyone who got the same basic number showing in the error, had the same specific problems, so one could test for those things.
It is probably just a lot of work to put off on the 2 programmers left at MS who really understand the system , which has nothing to do with the multiple teams of html and xml and net writers and grafic designers. Hard enough to decode what they have done, let alone put human words on what goes wrong with it . :-)
I think we are up to like 21,000 layoffs in the place, which also included buying nokia then dissolving it into oblivion (in my words)
I am not sure if my $100 donation for thier last upgrade is going to fix anything.
02:07
@Ramhound mechanical keyboards!
I have a Razer blackwidow, which is a chunky beast.

1 hour later…
03:09
Can I delete the C:\Windows\winsxs folder?
@PaulVargas well it is pretty hard to do, but you could try :-) you would just destroy the whole system, because that is (basically) where it all resides.
Er. No.
In fact, if you ask that question about any folder, the answer is "No " ;P
03:30
Why would you delete it? WinSxS exists so you can repair your installation if it doesn't exist, any system corruption, is unrecoverable.
03:46
Official Microsoft TechNet article on cleaning up WinSxS.

Bob
04:45
...note to self: read whole context before replying
(Saw you were talking about Babylon. Didn't see above)
@Ramhound any system corruption Ha! When?
^^^ Because the size of that folder.
@PaulVargas: the point I was trying to make is if you don't know what you're doing you may break something
@JourneymanGeek OK. Thanks!
05:23
@PaulVargas that all looks normal. there are things that you can clean, or that will automatically clean when using the windows standard cleanmgr.exe thing. and newly updated things will eventually show up in the cleaner too, as time passes for them, under the assumption that they are there to stay (not needing uninstall).
05:47
eh. Today's a good day for spam flags.
Assuming I don't smell out the processed meat product that you shouldn't ever feed your dogs first.
06:00
is anyone going to the humans on a chip conference ? eventbrite.com/e/…
the idea being testing crasy new drugs on animals is not to effective when they are not human. Instead create a contained and contrived human biological setup in the lab using parts and pieces of what would be real human parts. . . and that (of course) would be just like a real human :-)
Bob
Bob
@PaulVargas Keep in mind that the sxs folder's size is misreported due to its use of hard links.
A large portion of that is already accounted for in the size of other folders.
06:19
^^^ Do you think that the size in that window is misreported? -- Yup, I have the spanish version of Win7. :D
most of that is probably real. as the whole system and updates and a few other things are stored all there. from there things are "projected" out in hard links to form what looks to us like the whole system. So one could also say what they see in the rest of the system is also real, but it links to the same file items , it is using the same file items.
The problem with mis-reporting, is they arranged the system to work this way (as far back as updates to XP) and they made no provision in the rest of the system to show it different in size stuff, based on hard link repetition. So both items presented , both are real, hard linked to a single chunk of data on the disk.
Most of the size stuff in the system, will still count that data on the disk Hard linked twice (at least) 2 times too. That which resided in the Wsxs (or better words "Component Store") and that which is plastered all over the disk in many folders.

@ssnobody I've installed jpm. Now what to do? (I am running GNU/Linux)
Anybody can help me ( I am following :)
3
A: How do I use Google data compression proxy on Firefox?

ssnobodyUsing the Google Chrome Data Compression Proxy on non-Chrome browsers involves two steps. Set your HTTP proxy to proxy.googlezip.net and port 80. For each of your requests, calculate and inject a Chrome-Proxy header into your request. The Chrome-Proxy header should contain the following strin...

What I've done?
1.sudo apt-get install nodejs npm (succeed)
2.npm install jpm (succeed)
jpm directory found at $HOME/node_modules/jpm
Need help step 3 onwards (as provided at there).
Currently facing:
$ jpm init
bash: jpm: command not found
$ ~/node_modules/jpm/bin/jpm init
/usr/bin/env: node: No such file or directory
hm
IIRC some ubuntu versions fire up node as nodejs
there's a package that fixes that
Do you mind reinstalling node from a third party repo?
I believe nodesource is the one I use github.com/nodesource/distributions
@Pandya ^
07:02
hm. Are you on debian or ubuntu?
ahh trisquel
Yeah, plausible its the same issue as with ubuntu
try er...
which node and which nodejs
@JourneymanGeek done.
@JourneymanGeek thanks, Now it seems working:
$ ~/node_modules/jpm/bin/jpm init
title: (My Jetpack Addon)
@JourneymanGeek But let me know what to do for "Create/Change to new directory for extension" as suggested in it? @ssnobody
07:25
that I'm not sure what he means
I do believe it MAY mean create a directory and run those commands so everything is contained in there
No problem I've created xyz directory and running jpm init
Answering prompts as defaults (suggested in bracket) but I didn't understand : He said "leave entry point set to index.js"
title: (My Jetpack Addon) My Jetpack Addon
name: (xyz) xyz
version: (0.0.1) 0.0.1
description: (A basic add-on) A basic add-on
entry point: (index.js)
that looks about right?
should I continue by ans-ing index.js?
I have no idea
try it. See if it breaks, try to fix it if it does ;p
finally I've set jpm init successfully
@ssnobody "Add extension code below to index.js" Done.
@ssnobody
$ ../bin/jpm run
JPM [info] Starting jpm run on My Jetpack Addon

07:42
which firefox
OH
which iceweasel
then add a -b path/to/iceweasel after the jpm run
...
actually I am running icecat
...
Same idea.
grumble grumble
Ideological correctness makes it hard for me to keep track of these things ;p
@JourneymanGeek thanks done, working!
lol
Do you understand what you just did, and why stuff broke? ;p
(that's more important ;p)
1) node on older versions of ubuntu and trisquel suck.
2) Debian's firefox forks are confusing as hell
3) which is awesome ;p
Oh!
@ssnobody what correction I've to made to fix this?
07:49
er...
@JourneymanGeek what?
No idea
At this point you need someone who actually groks FF extensions ;p
ok. I think I've to wait until @ssnobody available.
@JourneymanGeek I've post comment may he will help.
also, there's no point in @tting someone in chat unless you know they've been here recently
@JourneymanGeek ok. Thanks a lot for co-operating and helping.
currently I am leaving.. good-bye

@Psycogeek Using powerbank for charging mobile devices? Xiaomi 10,000mAh or Anker 10,000mAh?
i have a zebora, plus about 6 others, and my own propriatary solar charger. The solar on them is 80% useless , but given enough time and a full on apacalypse i could watch a movie :-)
Because the wortheless solar pannels added to them add little to the cost, it is there. The biggest problems with any of this stuff are 1) the capacity is a lie. 2) the output might not be as high as it lists 3) the drivers/curcuit stuff could up and croak. And all that came way more often with cheap china junk. vrses more expencive china junk :-)
Buying them is like buying rechargable batteries, only 2 people out of 50 even seem to know what is going on , or what is inside. so reading through the reviews, try and find the geek who knows what should and shouldnt be, and easily ignore those for whom everything is a wonderment 5 minute christmas gift. and then you will probably know more before purchacing.
Other conciderations, but not nessisarily flaws. some people want it to charge at the same time is is charging something else, so your basically charging it and the device at the same time. chained. some of them will do that, some will not.
I have had many of the cheaper smaller china ones apart, i can tell you for positive that NONE of the cheap ones ever had the stated capacity of battery inside. A 2000 with a 1500 , a 2600 with a 2000 and a 3600 with a 2400. That is what was listed on the battery itself inside :-) then testing the battery it did not reach that even this lower actual capacity ever either.
11:12
If you want to be a lot more sure about the batteries, and have the batteries be replaceable, because "they will die" one of them that holds , but does not come with 4 X 18650s would allow you to test the batts, and replace them in 2 years.
._.
Also works as a portable firestarter?
things like this, although that has to be the crappiest piece of junk done that way i have seen to date. Connectors should have springs
heh. Personally? Just get a xiaomi. They're actually pretty well made.
there is only 1 style of xiaomi on amazon that even rates. why they clone the clones :-) it is like why they clone ultrafire batteries , when it is the worst battery out there.
here is a more correct version of a replaceable battery style amazon.com/Aurabuy-External-Battery-Charger-Display/dp/…
stuff like that is more useful if you also have flashlights already using 18650s and some great batts for them, like LG or some panasonics.
@Psycogeek: I got mine direct. Which is kinda amusing since a lot of neat stuff isn't available here yet lo
11:37
Direct (anything) is good, that is one sure way to get not only real, but fresher items. when the batts do not last forever, and also have to be maintainted properly, a shelfed item might be dying before you even get it.
I have made a 4XAA version, used with eneloops, wired up Raw. It worked great, but only for the ~1700ma that it could ever put out to charge something.
@Psycogeek Direct as "private import" i.e. personal use?
And should it be 2 charging ports or 1? Pros and cons?
11:53
@Boris_yo 2 so when you toast the one because of the crappy underrated components used, you still got one left :-)
You never really even know with this stuff if there even is 2 curcuits, or just 2 ports.
@Boris_yo mi.com/en/store if i did it right, Direct, and even cheaper than they are selling them for Whhhhaaa ? but i would still recomend say the 16 if you really want 10 :-)
There are your standard conversion losses anyways, anytime you have to "boost" from the li-ion voltage to the 5V usb, then in ya device they buck back to charging the li-ion. so it would be totally par to have 30% loss in all that.
@Psycogeek Disadvantage is that you take responsibility for your own import. If there's no safety compliance then the risk is yours. On the other hand buying from retailer who gets it from wholesale importer is safer due to import guidelines and laws imposed.
I feel safer buying charger made in China for more expensive price knowing it passed US CBP requirements and country import regulations than ordering from china store personally.
I came here to not ask questions and drink coffee. And I'm all out of coffee. So I guess I'll go make some.
If you have the usual phone, and just need it to run all day, then anything that has 1.5X the battery in your phone would be enough. if you got a power sucking tablet , then start with a 45,000 :-)
Getting house burned is worst case scenario that can happen with personal imports.
@Boris_yo That's why I pack all my electronics in a case of powdered asbestos
No fires for me!
12:02
@bertieb sounds healthy!
@bertieb Asbestos = cancer
@Boris_yo That's not logically correct! it's causation not equality.
@Boris_yo I was joking :P But actually, depends on the asbestos; and if you leave it well alone it's usually fine.
Asbestos => cancer
@Boris_yo why would you think they can burn your house down amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RH5U9X6TTUKVH/… never happens.
12:05
My garage roof is asbestified and I don't have cancer yet!
bertieb nods proudly
Back to cylindrical li-ion cells, properly made 18650s will disconnect , when the gas raises up in them. Cool china ones have the fireworks though :-)
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo I'd go for the Xiaomi. Because it's actually far more available than the Anker one :P
(Anker stopped shipping to Aus a while back)
For Xiaomi... get direct if you can. Otherwise, iBuyGou is a legitimate reseller AFAIK.
We also have a couple local resellers here I trust, but they don't ship overseas for obvious reasons.
Or maybe they do but you don't want to pay that.
> The ground prong on my backpack vacuum came off and stuck inside a wall outlet.
O_O
@bertieb as far as you know. STAY AWAY FROM CALIFORNIA.
My first powerbank was recalled for having a tendancy to catch on fire. The replacement kinda annoyed me, so I gave it to my dad.
12:18
Parracide :-O
naw, that dosen't catch fire
it was just... ugly as sin
It fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on its way out
Original was matte blue. Replacement was badly done shiny chrome plastic with randomly changing red/green/blue LEDs which made the actual power level lights impossible to read
I luv some of the power level meters in the flashlights. when it blinks 16 times then stops and blinks 14 times, then 2 times, it means the battery is at 4.37 volts
lol
I want 4 lights. With the current level blinking
which the mi powerbank does well
12:33
So... I found a 2009 MacBook in the trash a few days ago. I have no idea if it works or not, because I havent gotten hold of a charger to test it with yet.
What should I do with it?
Bonus points awarded for suggestions that have absolutely nothing to do with actually booting, running software or other normal uses for a Mac.
Bob
Bob
@Kristian defenestration
I would like it to have a longer lasting effect than that. Also, wouldn't I technically need to boot windows for that?
I am more thinking along the lines of:
- cutting it in half and mounting on a wall as a shelf
- 'hey guys, look at my new Apple-branded chopping board'
- mounting trucks and using as a skateboard
Does anyone use X11 forwarding in ubuntu
Gnome is slowwww(on a LAN)

Aug 16 at 22:13, by bertieb
So I'm using the laptop as a back cushion
@HackToHell I've used the similar-but-different xpra, which is described as screen for X
(so to answer your actual question, no)
@Psycogeek It helped!
Both my back and the laptop, funnily enough
@HackToHell xpra is generally 'fast enough' for my purposes, but I don't use it that often or for anything complex
@Kristian: Could use it to cut a cake.... oh wait ;p
I'd see if it works first tho, just to be sure
@HackToHell: meh, nomachine!
@bertieb okay lemme check that out
@JourneymanGeek Will try that too :D
@JourneymanGeek is it private and secure ?
@HackToHell: Everything is SSH tunneled ;p
Oh so it doesn't home to nomachins's servers ?
13:13
Nope
yay then
Actually the package has both the server and the client
Downloading the client :D
its vnc-like tho
there's no option for ... er... single window forwarding
its bloody fast and adjusts to connection speeds well tho
13:30
okay, trying it

Q: How to restore system from windows.old manually after Windows10 upgrade

user75875I just upgraded a brand new T100 chi with 32 Gb of disk to Windows 10. The option to restore Windows 8 is not proposed though Windows.old is present. How can I do so manually ?

First you quit depending on Microsoft , obviously that didnt work, or you wouldnt be headed back. Then you freaking do your own backup !!!
Ahh it is not how many times people need to be told that, it is just telling all 350million of them once :-)
How about Top tech news story of the week, with links to reddit , tweeted and with its own facebook page. Like all the Lame ass stuff that didnt matter :-)
Cool headline like "Fix all your windows Woes with just ONE simple program" "any one, any freaking backup program that you can find that doesnt require windows to work"
How about we have Taylor Swift write a new song. "My nonMSexual backup" she could show one nipple during the perrformance and the whole world will know.
15:39
That's Taylor Swift?!
How would i know?
That's not what I was expecting
I'm not sure what I was expecting
But... it wasn't that
I wanted to check and did a search-by-image on G
It's normally pretty good, but here... not so much
16:07
@Psycogeek There would not be less risk if that was Xiaomi?
@bertieb Which reminds me...
@Boris_yo not that i know of. any one of them, any iphone, any tesla, any boeing jet (oh wait they arent doing that anymore) could have a battery problem. Bad curcuits can also create them.
Cylindrical cells can have 2 additional physical safety features that bagged cells do not have. Anode disconnect , and PTC (positive temperature coefficient) or generally called a thermister. But cheap china cells without this stuff are more dangerous than bagged because of the tight containment and metal fragging.
16:55
@Pandya jpm defines a minimum supported version of firefox / iceweasel in the package.json that is created by it's `jpm init. Currently, my package.json shows: "firefox": ">=38.0a1" but it appears you are using firefox / iceweasel 31.2.0. Lower the required version number in package.json to something below 31.2.0 (30.0 for example) , then, repackage it via jpm xpi and reinstall, or launch it via jpm run again.
@Pandya I know you are currently past this step, but I wanted to clarify that "Create/Change to new directory for extension" meant, jpm init will be creating a bunch of files in whatever folder you are in when you run jpm init, so let's create a new clean directory that will be used for building this extension and change into that new directory. I'll make sure to clarify this and the possible difference of nodejs vs. node binary names differing between distributions.

Is there any way to view the model of the a Windows Lenovo machine? Through the machine that is, and not by looking at. say, a label on the machine, as it has fallen off.
@Psycogeek Tell me how Chinese are not threat to innovation like iBlazr? Counterfeits are reported - amazon.com/Original-Android-devices-digital-Concepter/dp/…
user136984
Is there information about this in the Control Centre?
20:48
@Boris_yo But china makes everything now :-) so arent they just cloning themselves anymore :-)
@ParanoidPanda msinfo32.exe (system information) will show you enough stuff to make your eyes bleed. Control Panel\System and Security\System will show you general system info.
21:11
superuser.com/a/961264/98855 Now i know why I dont bother to talk about that . It is like trying to write a "How to Jump off the roof of your house while on a skateboard, and land safely in your pool" The end message still is Are You NUTS, yea.
