so this is the Mouse and Key sharing utility that works with windows and linux and mac, and changes control of the computers based on moving the curser to the other monitor that computer is using?
(or is it a program from scientology :-)
Its the former. its open source but they insist on a 'donation' now
so is there a client program and server kind? or the same program is run on each? Can you bounce from different systems? like control linux computer with windows mouse and key?
client and server is the same binary. you can use it cross platform (which is the main advantage it has over mouse without borders). You set one system as the 'server' and the rest as clients, add the clients to the server and drag the screens around to set the geometry.

well that finishes the ability for this chip Intel Pentium haswell g3258 originally a 3.2 got it to 4.3 fully stable, with a 4.3cache too. all from a $59 chip. it is still 1/4the the total computing power (in some benchmark) of my 4770k overclocked. If i figure that 1/2 of that is due to 4cores instead of 2, i figure for single threaded operations it is 1/2 speed now.
(the GPU on it still sucks)
the chip is not "unlocked" which i was wondering about when it was claimed to be the lowest price overclockable chip (1150). So it had to be done with a board that allows changing of the "Strap" (125) and adjusting the Bclck (the base frequency for the whole board).
04:15
I put it back to stock, and it runs 23Gflop things (20 when the memory was also stock) and gets to 31+ Gflops when overcloced to it's max.
(in comparison , on a best overclock for a 4770k you can get 120Gflops)

I come across questions like this

Q: How important for speed is the length of the phone cable between the wall and the modem?

Andrew SwiftI have an inconveniently-placed phone jack in my office, so I am running a 10m phone cable from the wall jack to the modem, which is on my desk. Consequently, I have a very short ethernet cable between the modem and the computer. I know that within reason, the length of the ethernet cable does n...

Q: What exactly is the "Shellshock" vulnerability?

FLGMwtConcerning the Shellshock bug (aka "bash bug", CVE-2014-6271), can someone explain how this vulnerability works? Based on the test given in some posts (below), it looks like some type of injection using environment variables, but what exactly is occurring/not occurring to keep this from happening...

shellshock is "just another hole" with just another cute name for it. Most of these things are like America, a whole continent existed, and someone finnaly sees it , and thinks they get to name it :-)
Columbus discovered america, In the opinion of those who had not yet seen one of the larger of the land masses on the whole planet.
Such is holes, the discovery of which is like an ant on a sieve. Ant says "found one"
98% of people are "good" 89% of criminals are stupid, chances of holes being abused by criminals Before they are known entities is therfore low.
and again (like the last few security news items) the "bug" has existed since 1992 according to the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellshock_(software_bug)
"" appreciate the effort made in patch bash43-026, but this patch doesn't even BEGIN to solve the underlying shellshock problem. This patch just continues the "whack-a-mole" job of fixing parsing errors that began with the first patch.""

Took me ages to get Hyper-V Server working on my old laptop
1
A: "RPC server unavailable" trying to access Hyper-V server from Hyper-V Manager on Windows 8.1 client

DragonLordRunning HVRemote helped to elucidate the cause, and it turns out the firewall on the client was misconfigured. The Dragon is protected by Norton Internet Security. While I had a firewall rule explicitly granting access to the server, it was placed at the bottom of the list of rules, so it did no...

This was my first taste of running Windows Server, and it sure was enlightening
It also brough to my attention a feature I never realized I had access to (especially since my main laptop runs Windows 8.1 Pro): Remote Desktop
...and I never knew Microsoft had an official Remote Desktop app for Android
I was stunned when I saw my Windows desktop on my Nexus 7
...and here I am, connected to the Dragon and chatting in a desktop Firefox window on my tablet
Iirc they acquired it
@JourneymanGeek huh?
It used to be a third party product they bought over. I'd check but I'm on my phone
08:28
@JourneymanGeek Even the Windows 8.1 touch functionality is fully supported
It lags a bit (blame it on the slow processor of the 2012 Nexus 7), but it surely works

Q: How do I Insert date of this coming Saturday in Word?

MetzedIs there a way in Word that I can insert the date of the coming Saturday in the format 'Saturday 4th October 2014'? This needs to update every time I print the document, so whenever I print the document it will give me the date of the coming Saturday, including this that Saturday is today. Thanks.

Gezus just freaking type it in already :-)
"I would like to save 40seconds of my time, how could i spend $100 and 4.5 hours to do that"
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Not if you have to do it every time for the next year.
Something automated is not going to be forgotten, either.
true, but often i finnaly get an automation all learned up and working perfect, then it is obsoleted
there still exist the hopefullness in the process though, it is much funner to work towards the goal of having it magic. Some day the freaking laundry is going to do itself.
Bob
Bob
Let's see... 30 seconds weekly, you can afford to spend two hours automating it to have amortised identical cost over five years.
That's ignoring the whole 'won't forget' part.
@Psycogeek And there's that :P

Some of the worst tasks in the wolrd have been replaced by a machine. A person who would swear that "now it can do $500 of work for $10" it isnt one year later that the same job only pays $5 , because the machine does it.

With respect to Remote Desktop on the Dragon, I've set up the firewall to block any incoming RDP connections outside of 192.168.0.0/16
if i have to enter in one more licence or activation code i am going to gladly accept having a bar code tattoed across my forehead.

@JourneymanGeek is it? I am using Corel paint shop now, and i figured eventually i would Learn how to use it, instead it is like speaking a different language. I am still very very slow interfacing with it, things still feel hard to find. There is nothing that is "better" or worse about either for photo editing, I am just locked out to my initial learning.
It would be cool to go back to photoshop, which i dropped due to A) CS is a pigpile of slop B) photoshop would get unactivated, and it took hours to get going again C) Corel does the same things cheaper, and USED TO be a more intuitive program (not any more).
Basically it was eol and they released a VERY old version with activation turned off. It leaked since they stuck it somewhere without authentication
Its not free in a legal sense..
well i got some licence that will cover it :-)
i have spent hours on the phone with adobee , had licence just that i accidentally broke the activations, all that changing the computer around, and truning shit off.
today i broke (broke meaning the shit dont work) Xp hash again, freaking great way to treat the only paying customers, i would have saved days over years if i just applied the crack.
oh well all the donations i made to "freeware" because of very valuable ones, they all became obsolete too :-( Guess 2-5$ just doesnt buy a beer anymore.
But they are covered, they just toss in some Malware or advertising now and it pays for everything (bla)
"" I really didn't think you would stoop so low as to blackmailing your customers to pay to remove the ads.

Is this really the way you want to treat your customers?""
Welcome to your future, next time you will be happy to pay a good full One Time price for stuff.
Did they ever work out that Pay-As-You-Go Hardware model yet? where you get one core of an intel processor and pay $100 and they unlock the second one for you?
They could do that with the Sound too. "stereo option available through one time payment"
Hard Drives that only allow 1T IO until you pay another $50 , to have another 1T
Consumer computers with built in Credit card slots, LCD ad displays and hourly rental fees
All maners of evil could be done, if they just were more creative in thier greed.
Somone has actually done a "free phone calls" model, where in the middle of your phone conversation an audio advertisment is played back to you and the party your calling.

but if you combine all the answers it's all there

@allquixotic Certainly long though :P
@allquixotic one good answer and the rest discarded would be better, still i learned something.
@Bob yeah, but it's like having http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux[0] through Linux[17] and each of them contains its own small inaccuracies, half-truths, glaring omissions and reiterations of the previous ones
if you're a genius you can read them all and come up with a complete picture by putting together the jigsaw puzzle
I get kinda annoyed that the SE platform doesn't really allow that kind of answer congealing
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Eh. The general method is a CW answer that merges existing points.
But you probably wouldn't get much exposure.
11:34
the exposure is already there, since the question took off like wildfire
I suppose a mod could make it CW, but that removes the rep incentive, which I think is about as stupid as if Wikipedia deleted the entire user namespace
if anything CWs should involve special exceptions that give you (small amounts of) rep for making significant edits to CW answers

expect FF 32.0.3
actually, 32.0.3 is already out
I have not even attempted that. I have asked for a VM o run at home. (basic idea: start the VM, VPN in and just run all work stuff from that).

Q: Burnt SATA Drive

luvieereBy stupid curiosity, I've connected the FDD power cable to the jumper pins of a SATA drive, and powered on the system. The SATA drives controller is now burned out. Can it be replaced, and still be able to read the disc?

Why would anyone ever try this. ever ?
Bob
Bob
13:15
@Hennes How?
A floppy drive power connector is male, IIRC.
SATA power connectors on the drives are also male.
Has the "graphs" tag been deprecated?
By "charts"?
@Bob FDD power is sort of female (IIRC it was a cable with four holen). The option jumpers on the drive are def. male though.
Bob
Bob
@Hennes I haven't seen a SATA drive with option jumpers.
Not that I recall anyway.

@JourneymanGeek is that OK?

13:45
@Bob There are drives with jumpers to force SATA- 1.5GB/sec rather than SATA 3.0GB/sec. (For broken chipsets/controllers). As well as options to limit disk size to 2TiB.
Possibly more. Delayed startup would be nice, but I mostly see that on SCSI or SAS drives and not on consumer SATA.
14:00
@Hennes True, and true. But what's "delayed startup" and what's it good for?
Delayed startup means that the drive will not spin up as soon as it receives power.
Instread it will wait. Typically a few seconds, or a few seconds times an ID.
E.g. Take a computer with 15 SCSI drives.
If I power them up all at once they will use max power all at once (e.g. 15x25 Watt)
If I staggered spin-up them them drive 0 may power up immediately. 5 seconds later drive 1 start its spin-up. 10 seconds later drive 2, etc etc
Typically you either have:
0) Power up as soon as possible (no delay)
1a) Wait some time
1b) Wait some time based on other jumpers (e.g. on the SCSI id)
2) Do not spin up until you get a start command (e.g. from a host adaptor or RAID card)
@Hennes Thanks for sharing! I can see how that would be useful.
It is not something which is useful for typical 1 drive consumer desktop/laptops :)
That's probably used in big server environments. But on consumer disk drives, I have not seen such options.
@Hennes Exactly! ;P
The Dell R300 I got a few years ago had 160GB SATA drives with 4 jumpers.
My WD2002FAEX (2TB drive) also has 8 jumpers.
the 4TB seagate desktop drive only has 4 pins (2 jumpers worth)

I am not sure how for force a connector in them though. Assuming I still have a FDD connector.
hmm, wait. I do have one. It is in my i7 desktop, next to a 1.44MB drive.
Which is unused since ...ehm... ever ?
14:13
@allquixotic: yeah
@Hennes That's too much information! :) Your point is?...
I have one usb floppy drive, in case
I used to have two but I gutted it, chopped it up a bit, and put my display controller inside it ;p
I have a few of those FAEX series drives from WD. I'm pretty sure they use SATA connection. As for the jumper pins, I think they all came without the actual "jumper" you put on there. So you have to buy those separately. Using common jumpers from old PATA disks won't go in there sometimes on SATA disks, the spacing around the jumper pins is too tight.
@JourneymanGeek I have two old 3½ and one 5¼ floppy drive, all for internal installation. :)
I'm surprised there are still USB based floppy drives available on the market.

Movies , if you get a chance to watch "Space Station 76" just don't , it is barely a sci-fi it claims comedy where there is like 2 skits total, and it drags on like watching paint dry. the script was recycled out of a trash can, and while soap opera-ish it is worse than one. Pros: 70s music is ok, the extra sleep you get will have you refreshed.
