@allquixotic: eh. If you stood in the next SR elections, I'd probably give you a hearty endorsement. ;p
They do elect mods once we're out of beta IIRC

@JourneymanGeek Popped by to see who won... congrats on becoming a moderator, although i'm sure i am the billionth person to say so :p
Although I'm not sure how i feel about a dog running things around here ;)

@SimonSheehan: Thats speciesist. ;p
(and thanks)

then again im terribly inactive so my opinion may not count :P

What

oh, it makes sense if he has 32gb a processor

hmm that is true

so when he removes the processors, he has to remove the ram as well

Its the CD drive part he tossed in :p

1:23 AM
and honestly, people who run old servers at home shouldn't worry too much about power use
you might as well run a desktop

I used my messed up toshiba laptop as a server for a while haha

lol. I use a little atom box with a worn out fan

poor little atom

@SimonSheehan I have a 95 degrees Fahrenheit hard disk with 62 inches per cubic volt-meter of disk bandwidth

@allquixotic 95 degrees :O
Mine never goes over 24

1:28 AM
the main problem I have with it is that the psi per second is too low

@allquixotic: you need to replace your flux compressor bearings.

are you speaking in farenheit or Celsius?

@SimonSheehan: worth the 200 dollars I paid for it.
(though, I'll probably never buy a mini itx case ever again)
2
@SimonSheehan: Rankine naturally.

ITX.. mini, blah

oh the boards are fine in many cases
I just like the room, and not using those tiny non ATX power supplies
(PSU failed. I have no spares. Moved the board into a big old matx case with a standard PSU
complete overkill ;p
and installed a PCI gig-e card...

1:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek thanks, I'll try that next time I resilicate the telematics to meet minimum ferromanganite sublimation tolerances

which I can't use at full speed cause I'm processor limited ;p
(which is probably why the first gen atoms did only fast ethernet)

funny how we consider "fast ethernet" to be quite slow now

@allquixotic: at this point of time, I think gig-e is the only thing worth bothering with ;p

yeah, but I remember dreaming of having a 10 Mbps connection -- I couldn't even conceive of maxing out a fast ethernet adapter
now my LTE can regularly exceed fast ethernet speeds

Its reasonably futureproof (there's no major changes in base T physical networking for home use), its reliable (as far as the cables go), and its fairly low cost
Granted, I also use homeplug, but thats because I live in a apartment designed in the 70s ;p

@HackToHell Nope.

sorta quit it long time back

Oh, why ?

I'm not too good at it, didn't play for about month and half when I was shifting and the people who were playing with me were playing 3-4 games /day. Fell behind and then they started griefing me over being a feeder n00b etc
fuck that, I have my office, don't want to start playing and get griefed

Too bad, it's a great game ;p

anyway if I have to play it decently, it'll require a huge time sink & that's something which I don't have

@Sathya Yeah, the learning curve is too damn steep
I have put some 500 hours into it and I'm still no good ._.

I'd rather play D3 and kill some monsters

BunniFaccieThis issue doesn't pertain to any code exactly. I think my installation (python 3.3.5) became corrupted somehow. We really need a way to reach out and slap people through their monitors.
@alKid Firstly, questions relating to software development tools (including IDEs) are on-topic on SO as per your help docs. Secondly, please don't encourage cross-posting - migration exists for a reason (however, in this case, the question should not be migrated except maybe if the OP requests it - since it's acceptable on SO anyway). — Bob 59 secs ago

Question. Laptop keyboards and functions like keyboard backlight, dependent on BIOS and motherboard?

7:06 AM
independent

So if I replace a laptop keyboard with a keyboard from a newer model, with keyboard backlight, it should work on the hardware side?
The connectors are the same, and every other function works
If you are certain, you can answer the question superuser.com/questions/751085/… and I'll vote.

7:22 AM
@Expotr I'm not very certain, I"ll let @JourneymanGeek comment but it should work.

.... I SEEM to remember someone on chat tried it
or was that my cousin

@Sathya Thanks. I appreciate that. I've been waiting a long time for an answer.

@Expotr: if the connectors are the same, and there's software support for the backlight, it might
however laptops are non standard enough that its a crapshoot

Yeah. The model I stole it from is a predecessor to mine, and everything else has worked fine. So I'm hoping they're the same and it's simply a matter of driver support.

is there a way to bring up the "Advanced Boot Options" menu on windows 7 when you use grub2 bootloader?

@JourneymanGeek Could be your cycle

Thats girl dogs.

8:51 AM
There are a lot of blue names in this room
Kinda unsettling

9:04 AM
;p

how do you start windows in safe mode if you have grub2 as bootloader?
no advanced boot option
is there a way to initiate safe mode from within normal windows mode?
in this regard, windows 8 is nice, just shutdown /r /o and you can do it

Interesting question. Put it on the site if it isn't on it yet ;D

@OliverSalzburg it's on: superuser.com/questions/752841/…
and it's not just safe mode, from the advanced boot options menu you can enter command prompt, do system restore, etc.

Sweet, I got apiary.io working with our application

@OliverSalzburg looks nice

@Sathya It is. You document your API with Markdown and they provide a transparent HTTP proxy to route all your API requests through
Then you can work off of the recorded data and put it as examples in the docs
Took me a while to get basic CORS working with our app though

 + The UML diagram was very complex, with an extensive number of +
 + dependencies. Furthermore, there is a large amount of redundancy in +
 + the code (Room's being referenced in multiple locations). In +
 + essence, your design marks are quite low due to your high marks in +
 + the auto-marking. In a design course good design is more important +
 + than results!
God fucking damn it.
Doesn't help that the specs were vague as all hell.
I guess they wanted to mimic real-world.
With something that would never be used real-world, of course.

1:37 PM
@Bob I hate when you get graded down for choosing to interpret vague specs in a particular way
if the specs are vague, anything that could be logically interpreted from the specs should be acceptable
it's "you get what you ask for, not what you are imagining in your opaque brain"

Bob
@allquixotic At least real-world you get a complaint and you can change it...

yeah
I mean, shit, software development is about change
there are sparingly few projects where you start off at the beginning with planning, and follow the waterfall model verbatim, meeting exact deadlines, and never having to go back and change anything or release patches or any of that

Bob
@allquixotic I tried to cover every single case. Turns out that overcomplicated it by a lot -_-
Sure, it's a design course, but no one gives two shits about your design if it doesn't bloody work.

even for things that can't be changed easily after they're delivered to the customer, like ICs and non-programmable embedded hardware, they have many rounds of internal development where they do a release, get feedback, then come back and fix shit

Bob
@allquixotic You normally have UAT, etc., to make sure it's actually right
Or perfect specs.

@JourneymanGeek hehe. reminds me of
> draw me like one of your french girls

@Bob ^^ great overview (though I didn't learn much, I already knew that ;p)
Vendor A = Nvidia
Vendor B = AMD
Vendor C driver #1 = Intel driver on Mesa
Vendor C driver #2 = Intel driver on Windows
John Carmack commenting on that guy's blog = awesome :D
> Just wait until you meet Vendor D, E and F in the mobile space.

There's a Cat In The Hat joke here somewhere...
hmm. D = Qualcomm Adreno (basically a 10 year old kid that shares a common great-grandfather with AMD Radeon but is otherwise completely different)
E = Imagination PowerVR (relatively good performance, but very proprietary like Nvidia)
F = ARM Mali (worst performance, but there are open source drivers available)

Bob
@allquixotic hehe
> when you hit a bug in this driver it tends to just fall flat on its face and either crash the GPU
hm. TDR?
hehe
> it more or less works as long as you don't understand or care what "FPS" means

2:30 PM
@Bob are you asking what a TDR is?

Bob
@allquixotic ya

submit command to GPU -> GPU has a stroke -> no response from GPU, hmm, GPU must be dead -> tell the PCIe bus to hard reset the GPU -> reinitialize the GPU -> keep on trucking
works most of the time, unless the reason the GPU had a stroke has something to do with CPU-side kernel data structure corruption or similar (in which case you get a BSOD instead)

Bob
@allquixotic Oh, I knew what the thing is, just didn't remember the name/recognise the initialism
google was being useless too

@Bob AMD's most recent card "generation" looked like a desperation attempt to catch up to Nvidia: they drove up their clock rates by a lot, but the built-in cooling hardware can't handle the thermals it produces at max clock rate, so the power management stack clocks it down to run basically at HD7970 speeds anyway.
I'm really disappointed at how they designed that card: "oh look, way faster than your HD7970! ... until you run it a while, then it gets hot and slows down to almost HD7970 speeds."
tempting me to go Nvidia :/ which I haven't done since the early 2000s

Bob
@allquixotic Huh, I thought they were pulling ahead with all the mining/gpgpu perf
also see quite a few more games optimise for amd now

2:45 PM
@Bob yeah, but oddly enough, Nvidia is winning on game perf, and that's what matters more to me :/

Bob
@allquixotic didn't nvidia do better with float perf? I forgot

although I'm pretty sure the folks at Cloud Imperium Games have developers from AMD helping them; they were giving away built systems with the latest Radeons a few months ago for some contest, and I was watching one of their videos and they showed this programmer's rig in their office and he had dual Radeons
so as far as Star Citizen perf (which is really the only major upcoming game that I worry about my current rig being able to run it at great FPS and high detail) I should probably stay with AMD

@JourneymanGeek: you look darn pale there buddy.

Bob
@allquixotic but maybe not if you don't want dual GPUs :P

@Bob honestly, if Star Citizen runs exceptionally well on dual Radeons and for some reason runs significantly worse on only a single one, I might buy a second HD7970 (likely not nearly as expensive as when I first got mine) and CrossFire them.
again, that's purely speculative; if the benefits aren't there, I won't do it, but I'll be looking for benchmarks
as far as the GPU architecture and fab size, there is zero motivation for me to upgrade to the latest gen, so if it's just raw horsepower I need, and the renderer is multi-threaded and CF/SLI-capable, upping to dual GPU by adding one to what I have could work fine

Bob
2:51 PM
@allquixotic It'd be kinda funny if nvidia still turns out to beat them

and I have a ridiculous PSU, so that isn't even a concern for me
Corsair 1200W
the GCN 1.1 iteration only marginally improved video encoding perf and crap like that

@jokerdino naw, thats closer to the natural colour

Bob
@allquixotic Do you think Intel might let other manufacturers use its fabs at some point?

the HD7970 is still a very viable card, and it even will support DX12 once the driver support is there

looks VERY different based on lighting
@Bob: not terribly likely
thats one of the major edges they have over everyone else

2:54 PM
@Bob that would be a dream come true, except that the software used for describing the fab process is likely totally different between TSMC and Intel, so it'd require a "rewrite" of the "blueprint" of the GPUs to manufacture them on Intel fabs.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ya, but they might let others use the 22nm.

I did read that TSMC can support Silicon-on-Insulator and bulk CMOS equally well with virtually no changes to their fab design; but that just means they have flexible, configurable equipment that can just be "told" to do one or the other quite easily

Bob
Would be a nice cash cow, and would also make others more dependent on them.

@JourneymanGeek you are phoney. Real JMG doesn't reply directly to chat messages.

@jokerdino: does too!

2:56 PM
as for Intel, they only use Bulk CMOS for their CPU fabs at current fab nodes (such as 22 nm)
so I'm not sure if Intel's 22 nm bulk CMOS node could even support Nvidia's SoI chips

(ironically, I do when I am on my phone, since its easier for me to do it there)

(assuming the compatibility with the specs was worked out somehow)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wut

@JourneymanGeek oh okay.

@Bob if Intel did open their foundries for commercial production of non-Intel chips, AMD would be able to go straight in while Nvidia would require significant rework on one or both sides. Here's why: either (a) Intel would have to re-engineer their fab to also support SoI (unlikely) or (b) Nvidia would have to redesign their hardware layer to use bulk CMOS instead of SoI (equally unlikely, as it would be a huge change)

3:00 PM
@Bob: I'm using ChatSEy on my phone

for AMD it would be a software specification format compatibility issue, and little more. the actual chip design (on a physical layer) of an AMD GPU should be able to be fabricated quite easily using existing Intel fabs

@JourneymanGeek You reply directly on phone? Is that actually possible on the mobile version?

@jokerdino: basically bunch of javascript hacks bundled into a client for android
let me switch over to my PC and grab the stackapps link ;p

@jokerdino kinda
you can do it with the :<messageid> syntax
but no way to easily add it on the mobile site
@OliverSalzburg's reply helper script works though
I use it in a small chat window at work

@Bob I know about that but JMG saying it is easier in phone got me scratching my head

Bob
3:04 PM
@jokerdino I definitely wouldn't say easier
shift+:, up with Oliver's script

@Bob I have that installed too
forgot about it ;p

@Bob problem is, Intel could unwittingly let AMD back into the CPU business if they did that -- remember, AMD doesn't just make dedicated GPUs; they also make AMD Fusion cores. AMD would insist on letting them make those on the same process, which Intel would object to because they don't want AMD making good CPUs again, so the deal would collapse and it would never go anywhere. That's probably close to what actually happened at some point :P

@allquixotic: true. Since chances are via is... gone as far as x86 goes
however if they decide ARM is a bigger threat...

> Intel acquires AMD
!!maybe

3:19 PM
@allquixotic: kinda hope not
Also, Anti-trust
a weak but vaguely viable competitor is probably the best thing intel can have

@ThatBrazilianGuy sounds like "strike" is more common than actually doing work in Brazil...

@allquixotic Don't forget the holidays!
And nearly no actual work is done before the Carnaval period. The de facto year only starts in March.
And this year we have the World Cup in June, so one month less.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I can't believe you guys have a dedicated Sex day!

We like it so much, we have 52 of them every year!

@allquixotic What, your weeks have only six days? do you skip Fridays entirely?

@ThatBrazilianGuy what does Friday have to do with that?

OIC
that's boring; I thought you had an official sex day
"sexto" is 6th in Spanish too
I last found that funny in about 11th grade Spanish class

When I was a kid I always wondered why so many fairs all week around and where did they happen (Segunda-feira, terça-feira, quarta-feira, etc etc... "Feira" = fair).

What if it's a card reader?

@ThatBrazilianGuy please insert a disk into card reader??

What if it's a really small disk?

@ThatBrazilianGuy please insert a disk into a really small disk??
:)

No, duh. "Please insert a card reader into a very small disk"!

4:47 PM
or how about "please insert a really small card reader into a very big disk"?
"Removable Disk" is not a device type, it's a label given to any removable disk drive without a label
my point is that they should have used something more generic, go by the device type, rather than a label... i mean the label is not always descriptive, like "WEL312" doesn't say much about what or which device that is
in the example above it's a usb flash drive, so there's really no disk to be inserted into it, unless they expect me to unsolder and resolder the NAND
it's just that i'm having problem with that one, that's why it's spitting out a stupid error like that, needs to be formatted
