not sure if its spam or not, but is it just me, or is that website hideous superuser.com/a/747323/10165
@JourneymanGeek I would call it spam, the site is in its early stages, and it does seem to "answer the question" in this case, But it is just as much a "link only" answer untill the user describes how?
WHen checking out software Rec, i noticed that almost every conversation and every load of BS about quality of the answers etc. Seemed to leave out the ONE main and most nessisary item for keeping out spam, and lists, and other things they say they do not want there.
And it is one of the things that is presented in the SE stuff to provide. "The users own experience" with the software. Out of hours of reading, Guess which Meta contributor of all the bums there :-) Included , mentioned that important item?

I have a Lubuntu installation. Just now I went to run some apps and discovered that some programs, such as VLC, have no readable text; the fonts were replaced with symbols like diamonds and clovers. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thank goodness, I had enough rep. to vote... :D
@JourneymanGeek And, Congratulations! I knew you'd have nominated (when I saw the my voting invitation) :P
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut: If I hadn't nominated people would be bugging the mods until the next election ;p
> ...*my statistics are quite impressive*
^^^ Real charm... :D
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut: I probably have twice as many flags, quite a bit more rep....
;p
02:17
@JourneymanGeek Agreed... Looking forward to your moderation ;-)
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut: ;p
Someday, I should start participating in these sites (I shouldn't hug Physics alone) :D
... at least for T-SHIRTS!!! :D
(and stickers)
I'm looking forward to grinning maniacally like a muddy dog while sending spammers down to /dev/null
@JourneymanGeek Oh, look at that... poetic lines by a superuser induced by mod election...

its one of those tiny ones. I can get it running on a standard PSU for now, but I need to seriously consider moving it to a more standard case

2 hours later…
@JourneymanGeek not worth it
Yeah, I suppose ;p
@JourneymanGeek and I'm not certain he's trolling
06:12
new Firefox is.... ta da Chrome
@Sathya ....yep!

2 hours later…
08:31
does a hardisk partition always have to be physically contiguous?
Bob
Bob
@Sathya I'll see how long I can stay on 28 :P
@deostroll AFAIK, yes.
You can have logical volumes and filesystems spanning multiple partitions/disks, though.
For example, in Windows you can have a single NTFS filesystem sitting on a dynamic disk spanning multiple partitions.
@Sathya A nice indication as to how much UI conquers people's thoughts over otherwise functionality and core features. :p
Bob
Bob
@deostroll Functionality is useless without a usable UI.
I'm sure there's plenty of functionality available here:
A. I believe you replied to the wrong user.
Bob
Bob
08:47
@Thor Whoops.
@Bob B. A usable UI does not have to feature much. By the very definition of usable, the expectations are rather low.
Bob
Bob
@Thor Not really.
@Bob C. As much as the UI may not be user friendly, it can be very usable to someone who has the required experience and proficiency with said application.
Bob
Bob
Considering a browser is what most users will spend the vast majority of their time in, even the most minor issue can be extremely annoying.
Sure, but is it usable?
Bob
Bob
08:48
@Thor Remember: we are talking in the context of a web browser.
Regardless! I'm finding it difficult to see exactly what part of my initial statement you're trying to expand upon with your reply (to the other user). Are you implying that the UI in Firefox 28 is not usable altogther, or...?
Bob
Bob
That argument does not apply.
@Thor No, no it is not.
"usable" does not necessarily mean "not completely broken". Even the most minor issues can cause someone to look for alternatives when they use it so frequently.
I have a Lubuntu installation. Just now I went to run some apps and discovered that some programs, such as VLC, have no readable text; the fonts were replaced with symbols like diamonds and clovers. Any ideas how to fix this?
Bob
Bob
@Thor You imply that the UI is of no importance as long as "functionality and core features" are sufficient.
@Bob No, usable means "able or fit to be used".
Bob
Bob
08:51
@Thor Do you really have to argue this?
> Usability is the ease of use and learnability of a human-made object.
ease of use.
It's not black and white.
You're the one bringing up usability, I'm strictly refering to the black and white usage of "usable".
Bob
Bob
@Thor "usable" is not black and white.
Foo can be more "usable" than bar.
Where "usable" == "easier to use".
@Bob I would explicitly claim that UI is of minor importance provided it is not functionally broken.
Bob
Bob
@Thor I repeat: when you spend hours of your day using something, even the most minor issues can be too much.
@Bob If you want to argue that point, I would argue that it would depend on the context or comparison you're trying to make.
Bob
Bob
08:54
@Thor I was the one who said it needs "a usable UI". I believe I know what I meant to say, thank you very much.
@Bob well I wen't with a 80 gb partition at first. This is a primary one. Its where my windows installation files sit. So its a primary partition. I kind of want to expand it with easus partition software. What are my options?
@Bob Now now, it appears you've got some sand in your boxers. No need to feel offended by other people on the internet. It is also irrelevant what you knew you meant to say, considering it is not you who will interpret it.
Bob
Bob
@deostroll move the other partitions.
Do note that this is a risky operation, and you should probably take a backup first.
@Thor You assume I take offense.
@Bob Absolutely, at some level. Of course, I am free to be wrong! Preferably so.
Bob
Bob
@Thor Excuse me? You're the one saying it depends on the context or comparison I'm trying to make.
And my usage of the word is perfectly valid (see the quote above).
You can interpret it how you wish. I will tell you now that you interpreted it wrongly, as far as my original meaning goes, and I am attempting to correct that interpretation.
I don't care to argue over word usage. I have made it clear what I meant by that sentence, take it how you wish.
@allquixotic Space Citizen? Try this: i.imgur.com/0fa4NOy.jpg
(Apparently that's Unreal Engine 4)
09:03
@Bob The context of use covers more than your own intentions, as I (as you so clearly emphasise) stated depends on the interpretation as well. Anyhow, you make a valid point - there is no need to argue over word usage, as it is petty as well. Let's agree to disagree regarding your usage of usable - as I believe "a usable UI" isn't the same as "a sufficiently usable UI" or "a UI more usable than Chrome's" or... etc.
If you will, to maybe steer back on track, what I was really wondering about was this: were you implying that the new UI in Firefox is not sufficiently usable to let users use the core functionality available? (Does that sound okay? Clear)
Bob
Bob
@Thor I wasn't even talking about Firefox.
I was saying a UI is no less important than functionality in general.
@Bob Cool!
@Bob I think it's nuanced, and hard to find a sweet spot for it. Clearly though, as you point out, for a web browser it is incredibly important if you're seeking a big userbase.
Bob
Bob
@Thor Keep in mind that not every sentence should be read literally.
@Bob: that looks SMOKING hot with oneliner
09:28
@Sathya What version of Firefox are you running? I'm using Aurora (the pre-beta version of Firefox) and I absolutely love it.

@JourneymanGeek Hm?
What if a superhuman comes to earth. capable of making fire balls, he makes one blasts it in air. some lucky guy records it in his mobile. the superhuman goes. none believes him. is it possible to tell that the clip he recorded is real?
and not edited?
the clip looks exactly like a movie scene
Bob
Bob
@AwalGarg You're asking for an analysis of the veracity of a video recorded from a phone in a hypothetical and highly unlikely scenario...
Anyway, humans can make fireballs.
@Bob I said, let it be so. Then, is it possible?
@Bob superhumans, I say.

Fire breathing is the act of creating a plume of fire by breathing a stream of fuel over an open flame. It can be a dangerous activitiy but the proper technique and the correct fuel reduces the risk of injury. Performance Fire breathing is performed by both professionals and non-professionals. Professional fire breathers usually incorporate the fire performance skill within a show where other fire skills are performed. The element of danger in performing fire breathing and other fire skills enhances the entertainment spectacle for many audience members. Training The vast majori...
@JourneymanGeek oh. its looking really nice btw
@Bob yeah, thats what I said. Lets replace superhuman with a dinosaur. Now?
I mean, if someone catches some unusual activity in a clip, one thats impossible to believe, how would the owner of the clip prove that it is true?
given that, it never occurs again.
@JourneymanGeek onliner addon?
09:49
@AwalGarg Given that it never occurs again, the simplest answer is usually the correct one :-) it was all BS to begin with.
@Psycogeek whats BS?
stuff found on the ground in the bull pen after passing through the bull behind :-)
Often also seen in cults , politics, and conspiracy theories
@Leathe ^^^^^^
09:51
@Psycogeek What do you mean by the simplest answer is usually the correct one which correct one?
(you need to hit f10 to get the menu up, for opening shortcuts and the like)
hm. Imma check that out
@AwalGarg That is a saying, often things that are blown out of perportion, percieved by some nutcase, or portrayed on youtube, are answered by the most simple explainination, not the far fetched ones.
@JourneymanGeek I suppose Alt works as well?
yup
The older UI had the FF button which did much the same thing as the menu
09:55
@Psycogeek oh, I almost thought you were trying to give a nice answer...
sigh
#yindians.
Who told u,i copied the answer,i even not see the any answer,only give my answer till any answer mark helpful by asker ! OK? — SSAURABHH 1 min ago
@AwalGarg Lets say you saw a fire breathing dragon. and the question is was it Real, or was it fake? How likely is it to be real? how much fun would it be to be real? What is the simplest answer? Gee that a Fire breathing dragon has existed on the planet for 10,000 years and nobody else saw it but the entertainters.
@Psycogeek maybe it lives on some other planet unknown to man and came for an evening walk?
huh. this actually works pretty well with Tab Scope
OOps farudian slip, enterTainters :-)
@AwalGarg And that is the simplest answer? then that is likely to be the truth.
09:58
@Psycogeek so, you mean, there is actually no means (atleast no feasible one) to prove that the clip is real on logical basis, like technology, maths or something...
@AwalGarg: erm... at this point, you're really reaching
@JourneymanGeek reaching what?
A point of pointlessness perhaps ;p
and generally no, trust nothing you see.
sorry I am not verse with the common speech of english in us or uk :(
@AwalGarg None that i know of that could determine one set of pixels generated, from a set of pixels that were originally captured by light sencors in a cam? not anymore. Besides many of the greatest hoaxes in history were some of the lamest things done.
10:00
@Psycogeek example?

@JourneymanGeek Problem with the Hero pen :P
massive ink leak
maybe related to heat (trapped air + heat = expansion, + ink = lots of ink everywhere)
;p
I might have hinted at it being leaky in the past?
@AwalGarg Perpertual motion machines. They date Way way back, where a crappy wooden flywheel contraption was used much the same way as done today, to do what they have done now for (is it) 50+ years?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hmmmm :P
@Psycogeek I thought there would be ways how FBI verifies a video. And the limits to it. And what do they do if they get a clip which is out of common sense but comes out real in their test...
@Psycogeek the RP Feynman one, I know about it. Its good, :P
10:06
@AwalGarg Sure , and how much tv taught us that? I would suppose that an average person perpetuating a hoax would not be so elaborate as some CGI done for 1.2million for a movie. So a crappy photophop job, or adobee after effects whipped out to show some dude in a bigfoot suit , would be different?
@Psycogeek That assumption is certainly wrong. I have myself practiced AE for about 1.5 years. On a shitty ATI Rage XL 8mb chip, I have rendered perfect visuals very difficult to catch by real eye (ofcourse on low res because of the limit oh hardware)
@AwalGarg Sure and david copperfeild is great, do you think he dissapears things :-)
@Psycogeek and, CGI is not done for 1.2million for a scene of minimal length. Either, the movie is Avengers (Avatar would be too much)..
@Psycogeek of course not.
@AwalGarg Low-res then put it up on You-Tube by the time it gets through all that mess, who could tell anything :-) Persons might want to inspect the original, to veryify things.
@Psycogeek my institute has tight rules. and FBI would catch that I suspect. And there are tons of them on YT already:P
10:12
Just say it was recorded via these phones :-) not a one of them can make a descent picture.
@Psycogeek haha, yeah, we have to take that in account.
@AwalGarg The house owner here Clerks for some legal cases. Many times i get to hear bits and pieces of how a "computer is evidence" , I keep seeing that the opinion of that being solid evidence is ignoring a lot. But then again I think DNA opens up a larger ammount of abuse than fingerprints, via the "DNA Drop"
I still believe it would be harder to get your fingerprints on my crime scene than for us to get some of your hair and skin there.
Unless somone took your fingers with 'em :-)
All this new and high tech stuff is deemed to be more accurate, reliable and trustworthy. Like the dates on the files (oh nobody can change that:-). Such is the pixels of a picture or a moving pictures.
10:36
is there really no terminal server alternative for windows that can act as an rdp (remote desktop) host?
i mean for those windows versions that don't have the remote desktop server built in, like windows 7 home premium.
are these users totally out of luck? they can't replace the microsoft terminal server with an alternative software, and connect to it from another windows pc using remote desktop client (mstsc)?
@sammyg VNCs ? if you can move the mouse , type, see the picture , you can control anything without a terminal?
@Psycogeek no vnc
need to be able to run mstsc (microsoft terminal services client) on windows 7
and connect to another windows 7
remote desktop
@Psycogeek the problem is:
windows 7 home premium: connects to remote desktop host only
windows 7 ultimate: can connect to another RD host, as well as become an RD host for others to connect to
so the server component is missing in all versions of windows 7 and vista, below the professional edition
10:52
well a rdp server is on windows home premium since you can use it for remote assistance
but meh, there's decent alternatives to that
@JourneymanGeek you're right! screw them! :)
hehe
Yea i know about aspects of it not existing in home. I run only "pro" versions myself and still shut down MS remote , for being to well known. So I used 3rd party VNC even though i had it built in. Some people have said the 3rd party are better for some things?
(chrome remote is very nice, as is nomachine)
@Psycogeek ok, but third party? are there actually third party solutions that use RD/RDP that can act both as client and server?
@JourneymanGeek thanks! i will check those out.
@JourneymanGeek it's not for my personal needs, i'm just trying to figure out if there are third party RD/RDP solutions that can act as both server and client. i'm trying to provide some info to a user who's stuck with windows 7 home premium... poor guy :)
@sammyg ahh to reverse the control? or to have both acting both ways always?
11:01
i know that linux has RD/RDP clients... don't know about RDP servers though... but again, it's for linux... not for windows. there appear to be no alternatives for windows, except for upgrading to windows 7 pro.
@Psycogeek how do you manage to use vnc
haha
so painfully slow
@Sathya indeed
@Sathya Tight VNC, lotsa compression, buttons to chage when stuff was or not refreshed.
11:03
@Sathya: within a lan its usable
in a wan environment, I rather remove my own kidneys without anesthetic with a spoon

still not usable, at least to me
Bob
Bob
Which is pretty stupid.
@Bob: 8 inch disks... yeah you'd be ;p
Chrome's RD is pretty fast, was rather impressed it was as fast as mstsc
11:05
yup
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, I tool that as never seen any floppy.
nx is pretty scary fast too
only issue is pretty high processor use
@Sathya I do not know how MSes version is different (even), Didnt much think about it when every other 3rd party replacement for Ms programs worked so well. (with the still wonderfull kernal and bases system).
is chrome rd safe over wan?
I do not even use MSes file explorer GUI stuff much anymore. Q-Dir which runs quads of the explorer file interface , makes playing with 2 many windows , mich "better".

Q: New badge for answering popular question

Dave RookI know people up-vote for many reasons, but I think when the number of votes is high it represents a question which people are either experiencing (such as a technical issue) or wondered about (such as "why / how does that work"). Can we add a new badge (or a bounty score or similar) which is aw...

When thier (rather nice) video player started loading up with web and ads, there had to be a better way to do that. better faster smaller more control (as in manual control) Media player classic went in ages ago. MSes thing sits there faithfully providing backup program, and gets opened about 1 time a year.
There is always a Large learning curve to use 3rd party, but once that is done, there is often little reason to turn back.
New rule for the next election: Answers to the questionnaire have to be tweet-length!
Preferably yes/no/lol
11:34
lol
I'm personally not too comfy with the questionare format ;p
@OliverSalzburg lol
I see N00b spent a lot of effort to continue his work on kicking all the young blond females off the site :-) We certannly don't need any of those here.

superuser.com/questions/747498/… <---see stuff like this and know it is probably going to be closed. I wonder if it instead should be tossed in a blog? or is this just a copy paste anyways?
Google is getting desperate
I just got this notification:
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg I thought they were going to stop pushing G+ integration?
@Bob It's the first message of this kind that I got
"Someone just joined G+" OMGOMGOMG
12:45
@OliverSalzburg have you ever used genie backup? contacted them via e-mail?
i think it should not be possible to add people to your circles unless they say ok to that
i get added to circles by people i don't know
people who pretend to be someone famous
crazy people
i block them and report them
Bob
Bob
@sammyg I stay off G+.
@sammyg Never heard of it
@Bob me too
I have a G+ account but it's as disabled as it can possibly be while still existing.... a ton of things on Android are like "I refuse to work unless you have G+!"
13:11
@OliverSalzburg ok... so why would you want to say hello... that's odd
@OliverSalzburg i would report this user, or just ignore him
only two people have this user in their circles
it's probably some kind of scam
there is a backup program for windows called Genie Backup
the name of the company is Genie9, formerly "genie soft"
website: genie9.com
they do have a G+ account but that's not it
this is their G+ account: plus.google.com/u/0/+Genie9/posts
now there are other backup programs with the word "genie" in the title
but that account is just bogus
reported
and blocked..
I tend to use G+ >_>
I actually like it cause its less noisy than facebook
unfortunately google is too slow with processing these reports
@JourneymanGeek i can agree on that
i do have a g+ profile but i barely use it at all
@JourneymanGeek I'm with you @JourneymanGeek, FB is just idiots broadcasting stupid, G+ (my feed at least) is like a slightly eccentric news feed...
@Mokubai: worse. I have lots of family there
and old people
@Mokubai unfortunately, these idiots seem to have found their way to g+ as well
13:24
@JourneymanGeek I have family on FB too. Thank god they stay there... ;)
;p
(though I have one ex girlfriend of a cool person I know who's on a circle called "Spams too much")
after filling my entire feed in one day
@JourneymanGeek Yowza!
i read a blog post recently, and there was this guy who had problems with his internet connection, so he was without internet access for one day. he wrote that he had to spend the time with his family in the house... "wow, those are some really nice people" he said
@JourneymanGeek the ex girlfriend is your ex, or your cool acquaintance's ex?
yes
(the latter)
13:31
lol i'm glad you clarified; I hate it when the response of a "this or that?" question is "yes"
I get it that one of the two is the case, but you need to tell me which!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying "Yes" to that kind of question.
or woof
2
which is even more confusing if you don't speak dog ;p
@JourneymanGeek now woof I can accept
it forces people to parse their queries correctly
I wonder if anyone's having trouble with SE's openid...
I'm unable to login... O_O
^^^ haven't seen a link like that before...
13:35
@ThatBrazilianGuy wtf is going on with Sarava and your pro-corporation/govt "Internet Bill of Rights"?
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut check your password
yay, I got google now launcher working on my old phone
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut no https://openid.stackexchange.com/ is where you manage your SE open id
you usually access it from the main SE website
@sammyg I mean, I've used openid before... But, this time - I'm seeing a password request
13:38
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut it might have to do with your web browser
try restarting it
@sammyg: Ah... It says that I haven't registered my email yet! o_O
Are "my logins" different from this one?
could .... could? could? I'm struggling for words. I mean. is it remotely possible that AMD could have a better..... no. it's not possible. is it? IS IT??!
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut what site are you trying to log on to?
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut your login is your e-mail address and password you set up with SE open id
13:58
@Bob I guess the new AMD procs will briefly dominate the mobile space, until Intel releases 14nm later this year (unlike previous product launches, this Intel CPU launch will push mobile first, meaning that the desktop processors will be pushed back until after they're shipping their 14nm in tablets and small notebooks.)
I have no doubt that the 14nm based Intels will destroy AMD's latest effort to squeeze a bit more power out of the 28nm platform
