1:14 AM
Mornin

Bob
1:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek morning
(and it actually is morning for once! :P)
(if only by half an hour)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek take a look at the Lamy picture above :P
still looks 'bluer' to me :\
hrm. I made a big mistake with the rosewater
the smell is giving me a headache now
and it was 5% alcohol...
when i get home, I think I might flush this and remix some proper mauve (1/3 blue 2/3 red?)

@Bob: where?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhh.. I pinged you a bunch of times last night (sorry :P)

lol
for some wierd reason I can't find them, stupid thing just says 3 new replies

Bob
1:36 AM
the other pings were just below that

ahh yes

Bob
I should get a better camera for this. and lighting. that's important too.
my scanner sucks...

I'm just using my point and shoot, and natural light
mainly cause I'm lazy ;p

3 hours later…

Q: Is the Atlantic network cable a bandwidth bottleneck between Europe and NA

kbaI was reading about transatlantic telecommunications cables and it struck me that the only active cable connected to Denmark (where I'm from) from the US was the TAT-14. The TAT-14 cable being the fastest and newest (from 2000), it seems to be carrying most of all communication across the Atla...

I am tempted to answer: No, the NSA checkpoints are the slowest part.

4:40 AM
@Hennes You know how Amazon Glacier is a good archive solution - easy to backup to, but slow to retrieve
I was thinking we could use NSA servers as as similar solution
Just put "bomb" and "president" in your daily internet communications, and NSA will store all of your data for free

5:03 AM
Heh

retrival would be a PITA tho
you'd have to make a FOIA request they would turn down ;p

@JourneymanGeek I dunno, with people like Snowden and Manning around, it seems pretty trivial to get data out of the NSA these days

Bob
5:53 AM
oh fml
I just realised one of my courses next semester does PHP.
Kill me now...

@Bob Are you in your final year of college

Bob
@Gowtham no

Bob
6:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Note for future experimentation: rosewater is bloody useless
makes the pen smell like crap, and only lasts a few hours on paper anyway

Bob
7:23 AM
on the plus side, the smiggle pens actually write really well now :D
nib is rather delicate, though
bends easily

7:35 AM
is it the ink? ;p

@Boris_yo No, they can't check it, and they won't. They will wait until a representative of the copyright owner contacts them and requests removal of files.
For example a DMCA takedown notice.
There are whole companies dedicated to finding illegally uploaded content on file sharing websites, offering content owners the service to write takedown notices for them.
Other sites such as YouTube do fingerprinting checks to see if you uploaded something that was previously removed.

Bob
7:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have no clue :P
might try cracking open a couple of the cartridges and sticking the ink in a converter
I think it's the converter
@slhck Too bad those are so often abused.

@Bob: I used a syringe to do what with my plats ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but I have like 50mL of black food dye, 60mL of black printer ink, 90mL of black printer ink (different source), 50mL of black Quink, 50 Poky black short international cartridges and half a dozen Smiggle cartridges (came with the pens)... not sure if it's worth the trouble of opening a cart when I have so much 'ink' just lying around
incidentally, printer ink tends to be reasonably waterproof. hrm.

Bob
ya, this'll last several llifetimes :P

@Bob: I poured out a 'brush pen ink' cart into a storage bottle so I could try HOD on the pen ;p

Bob
8:00 AM
if I can find a good container, I'd send you a couple of random mixes just for fun :P

probably will end up dumping it into a vpen ;p
Kinda annoying how ALL my pens don't use standard cartridges ;p

Bob
lol
Smiggle ones are surprisingly decent

couldn't find them at the one I tried ;p

Bob
8:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek :\

lol
there's another one nearby

Bob
..
why are there so many Smiggle shops in Singapore?

ironically I was at the place with the fancy pen shop, the bookstore with the rhodia/clarefontaines and the bigass daiso more this month for work

Bob
and it always feels so awkward walking into one

@Bob: more like singapore is SMALL
awkward?
horrifying

Bob
8:17 AM
the feeling of I really shouldn't be here
@JourneymanGeek it's always the bookstores..
(incidentally, Dymocks had the third best selection of FP inks I saw, after that shitty specialty store and that stationery store)

@Bob: the best hardware store I know of is in the same area ;p

@Oliver Salzburg how is "Is there an XPS viewer for linux?" "not constructive"? — C.W.Holeman II 4 hours ago
Brilliant move, @OliverSalzburg :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek normally wouldn't catch me dead buying anything in a Smiggle store...

@slhck It's what I always do. Switch around the close reason until they are silenced!

@OliverSalzburg Did you see the pending edit?

8:20 AM
@slhck Roughly 20 seconds ago, yes

I mean, nice intentions and all, but if it weren't so plain obvious that there's no research effort…

taken care of ;p
also
SO user ;p

Bob
@slhck Remember, SE links rise very quickly on Google.

@Bob: I have a small niece!

Bob
Often, research is coming here.
And generally there are very few questions that are really too basic.

8:21 AM
least thats my excuse.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek your anti-rainbow shield? :P

@Bob SE != Wikipedia List of XYZ software

@slhck I'll let it sort itself out. If the edit is approved and the thing goes through the reopen queue, fine

Bob
@slhck ya, but that question is easily changed to a how can I

8:22 AM
SE ?

@Bob Yes, but then it still wouldn't show any research effort whatsoever.

stackexchange

Bob
@OliverSalzburg wait, I thought mod-closed couldn't be normally reopened

@Bob They can, like any other

yup, thanks.

8:23 AM
Also note 'the SE trilogy of SU, SF and SO' ;p

I would have replied to the comment and explained to him how the question is NC, but I was on my mobile and his name was too hard to type. So I opted for reopen/reclose
@Bob Even better! :D

The edit looks good, but would the minimal requirements part of the question still be relevant?

@JourneymanGeek That's the problem… even if it's in the question, nobody cares about that in the answers.
Which makes the question NC
> I think you should get Okular since it's the best XPS viewer for Linux

Bob
@slhck Huh. New change, or was it always like that?

If you get this answer you've asked the wrong question.
@Bob It's always been like that AFAIK

8:25 AM
hmm

So either we start more aggressively deleting these kinds of bad answers, or we forbid the questions. The latter was more easy to accomplish—it sort of came naturally.

Bob
@slhck Ah, apparently it was deletion I was thinking of.

@Bob Yeah, that is still not possible.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I enjoy myself far to much squirting ink around with a syringe -_-

looool

Bob
8:28 AM
Refilling is fun

I still have no problems with specific requests as long as it's apparent that there's no open-ended list of answers. I don't care about the wording in that case.

Bob
(trying to use it all up is, uh, less fun)

Bobtopus

Feels like chemestry lab ^^

@Bob Reminds me of my first refilled laser toner… what a mess that was.

Bob
8:29 AM
@slhck you can refill toner? O.O

Since that day, every page I print has black stripes on it.
@Bob Sure you can.

I need to check which of my G2s need replacement

Bob
I really don't see that going well.

@slhck: one of my printers did that, grease leak somewhere

Bob
Also, spills. That stuff gets stuck everywhere. And makes vacuum cleaners explode.

8:29 AM
@Bob As you can imagine the toner goes everywhere but in the cartridge.

@Bob: some laser printers just take a big jar of toner

Bob
@slhck Sounds like a damaged drum?
@JourneymanGeek Oh, separated toner and drum? I guess.

@Bob Possibly, but I don't need the printer anymore really. No university lectures or slides to print out :P

Bob
xD

How come i don't get a badge for deleting my own answer ? ^^

8:31 AM
That's how I enforced my paperless office. Didn't want to carry the damn printer three flights of stairs.
@Kwaio Only if it's scored -3 or lower

Bob
@slhck not sure if I'll ever get that badge :(

lol
I came close once or twice

@Bob Oh, we can easily make you get one.

Bob
uhh.. I'd rather get that naturally, thank you very much :P

haha

Bob
8:35 AM
trying ot reintroduce paper here
want an excuse to use my pens :P

Bob
even at uni >95% of my notes are electronic

@Bob Pens? What is that?
needs to look up Wikipedia

@Bob: I think I have a few too many at this point ;p
And I wierdly prefer to take notes on paper

Honestly the only time I use pens is to make a signature :/

Bob
8:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek eh, I type far faster than I write
and my signature (and handwriting in general) sucks

@Bob: I tend to use wierd layouts, colours and sketeches ;p
not counting the fist sized wooden ball, thats nearly all the contents of my pencil case ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 5 smiggle, one vpen and one safari so far
nice start to a collection :P
eh, G2s. overpriced things.

lol
@Bob: pretty fond of them, they're pretty smooth

Bob
bleargh
take longer to dry than FP ink

not likely to get any more tho ;p
@Bob: significantly better than ballpoints IMO
and they're about 2 dollars each, not too bad

Bob
8:39 AM
tbh I still like my Bics

and other than that franken pen, they last ok

Bob
the Atlantis is honestly the smoothest ballpoint I've ever used, and pretty comparable to the G2

not seen bics here at all
and probably switching over to the lamy for 'mundane' stuff ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek $4.56 ea here

o0
bloody hell

Bob
8:40 AM
$46.30 for a pack of 12

Isn't bic an european brand ? Wouldn't be surprised if that didn't cross the ocean easily...

I hope they supply lube too, cause thats SERIOUSLY overpriced

Bob
@Kwaio I'm in Australia.
Bics galore :P
@JourneymanGeek office almost exclusively use them. last time I did the stationery order... ouch

@Bob: I pay about 2.15 for them
RRP

Bob
ya, that's not too bad
for one G2 i can get four Bic Atlantises

8:42 AM
granted I think I can get red leafs here for 45 cents

Bob
(and my first one still hasn't run dry after a year, including exams)

If I do another order at goulet (not sure if there's anything I want there), might pick up one of the noodler roller balls ;p

but slightly doubtful, I only have a term of school left
@MichaelTanner: warning, DO NOT TAUNT THE HAPPY FUN BALL

@jou
fu .. sorry..

8:44 AM
lol
yeah, it works.

@JourneymanGeek o.O ^^

but i have a question regarding some bash scripting
i think its better to talk here instead of posting a question

lol
depends - asking questions is good too
Sometimes even if you find an answer here.

At least here you don't have to redact a full-length answer. Go ahead, i'mbored ^^

8:48 AM
ok ok here:
i would like to have some keyboard shortcut which pastes a specific content to the active window.. especially in chromium (textarea)
something like text blocks
but i dont know exactly how to proceed if it really works with a bash script

If you wish to enable this behaviour on all X-based software this is a bit broader than bash scripting

yeah i thought so
first it is necessary just for the browsers textarea.. but i don't want to use extensions

there's some tools that might do that.

Which desktop environnement are you using ? (Gnome, kda, xfce, etc)

wouldn't be an extention

8:50 AM
unity
(dont judge me, i like unity xD)
i already thought about using a python script or something like that

I also belive the best way to go is through small programs like that
Oh man how frustrating it is to not be able to comment questions...

9:06 AM
:/
what do you mean with frustrating, @Kwaio?

@Kwaio You can't t comment questions? Are there requirements for this?

50 rep, yes.
Which I haven't in any SE subsite.
Most of the times, i have ideas about how to help diagnose a problem, potential solutions, but not enough to deserve being written in an answer
And all i can do is wait to have grinded enough reputation to be able to comment questions/answers.

Yesterday downloaded Animatrix. 1.4GB took less than 30 minutes with 1.2MBps. That's pretty good for me with 12MBps connection.

@Boris_yo yes, you must have a minimum of reputation
@Boris_yo i have 1 gb/s ^^
1GBps

@MichaelTanner I'm seeing 1gbps connections popping up all around me but I'm stuck with ADSL both at home and at work :/

9:12 AM
We are not enven close to see that here.
Only lucky/rich people in big-enough buildings are provided fiber channel, and still have to share 100-400Mbps
(here = france)

the city of stockholm built a pretty solid fiber infrastructure
and then let ISPs sell the services
more cities should follow their example.. swedishwire.com/politics/…
european governments love spending anyways, so why not spend it on something useful :p

@MichaelTanner What? You have Google fiber?

lots of places have reasonably priced, insanely fast internet

@flote Wud up?

Imma export myself in sweden or something like that.

9:27 AM
@Boris_yo work work :)
setting up a zentyal server for firewalling and captive portal etc.

@Boris_yo No, not Google Fiber.. I am sitting in the Switzerland and we have 1GBps in our office. We are our own ISP.

@MichaelTanner did you hear from NSA?

@Boris_yo At home I have 150 MBps
@flote Not yet ^^

@MichaelTanner You work at ISP?

@flote I had never heard about this distrib, it looks promising !

9:30 AM
@Boris_yo No, just Hosting/Server company.

our building has 200/200 fiber drawn in to it, but the house owner and tenants can't agree who should pay the cabling out to all the apartments, so it's just sitting there

@MichaelTanner And what's upload?

@Kwaio yeah, I just recently stumbled upon it. haven't really tried it much yet, but it does indeed

@Boris_yo Home: 10MBps Office: 1GBps.. We have symmetric fiber.

@MichaelTanner I guess that's seconds to publish YouTube video in 1080p?

9:32 AM
@Boris_yo yes almost.

Was funny breaking speedtest.net record @work when i was working at that big hosting company

Bob
@flote they're trying to do that with the NBN here
rollout started a couple years ago
good chance it'll never finish :P

Weird thing about chat: when I have it opened in private tab on Android tablet, it does not get push notifications and I have to refresh chat. Seems like to do with permissions?

@bob here = england?

Bob
@flote Australia

9:38 AM
@Bob yeah, just googled it. I've read about that on slashdot. a lot of ground to cover :s
are they focussing on the major cities first?

Ours is in place ;p
but we're tiny

Here, there's coverage all around the city, but they're not cabling building of less than 12 flats... which must be around 80% of them

Bob
@flote some
but we have a lot of urban sprawl
they actually tried to get a lot of the regional areas up first
cause net was really crappy there

@Bob: what they did here was lay the backbone, subsidised early adoptors....

Bob
@Bob they're ripping out the copper here

9:49 AM
I think it was free for us, 200 dollars for detached and semi detached properties

this fundraiser isn't going too well indiegogo.com/projects/celeum

@flote Not enough word of mouth?

aren't they really overpriced? you get a lot of raspberry pis for the price of one of those

@flote Ouch

Bob
@flote It's far more powerful than a RPi
a 'lot of' RPis aren't useful in all situations

10:02 AM
@Bob yeah, I get the 'PC' variant, but for e.g. the cloud version, I think a bunch of PIs would be a lot cheaper/flop
it's still really cheap for a nice TV-connected open source home/media server
but it's nice to see all these ARM mini devices
I think the domain server uses zentyal

I wonder what you get for the price premium

@JourneymanGeek haha, preinstallation for $120
it looks to be running pretty smoothly youtube.com/watch?v=O3v0ydCG2yU#at=43

10:23 AM
its a pretty darned powerful device

the ARM builds aren't available at the dreamstudio site (the celeum ubuntu based 'PC' OS)

This is on a site meta, so downvotes don't mean much more than a metaphorical cone of shame. I do hope you keep calm and post on the correct site in future. There are checks and balances to handle people acting like idiots and bulk downvoting, thankfully — Journeyman Geek 15 secs ago
;p

can't find the zentyal ARM build either, for the domain server. isn't it a GPL violation to sell these devices without providing the source?
I guess he hasn't started selling them yet tho..

or gotten them working ;p

10:40 AM
@ЯрославРахматуллин hi

I'm suddenly annoyed by all tmux and screen questions. I don't get it. Why would anyone split their terminal into three or more parts?

@ЯрославРахматуллин Привет

@ЯрославРахматуллин Watched The Matrix?

Why do you ask?
oh the screen thing?

10:56 AM
@ЯрославРахматуллин Yes, I am seeking some explanations. If you understand movie fully of course...

It's not about splitting only
The fact that you cna keep several terminals open even if you disconnect from the machine is quite handy

its a way to multitask without X

you can also have several sessions and without splitting anything

it also alows you to keep scripts running without nohup
And to use less SSH tunnels if you need several shells in a remote server

But I see people doing that

11:06 AM
why not?
Its no different from having multiple windows
and you can disconnect and reconnect the entire session

Well, in all honesty I'd be confused.
I'll usually just screen -dR another session instead of splitting

Splitting can be intresting in a purpose of monitoring. showinf graphs, last logs, etc
But for interactive working, several windows are better imho.

I think it comes down to differnt workflows ;)
I prefer one application a monitor

11:15 AM
You're right though, J Geek

you'd be surprised how impressed people are at text mode apps...
or IRC
Considering I use a gui client, with a reasonably non hackerish font

lol
hexchat. I like having tabs to switch between the multiple servers/channels I am on ;)

Bob
last time I dabbled with IRC, I was using the Firefox extension
Huh. It's still there

@JourneymanGeek Seems pretty nice, i'll try it @ home

11:30 AM
@Kwaio: I'm dyslexic so I've been pretty much experimenting with fonts every chance I get to make things more readable ;p

droid sans mono is not worse than dejavu mono and supports Chinese glyphs. score

I find source code pro SLIGHTLY easier on the eyes tho

I'm a fan of terminus, but it's good to change from time to time

On a slightly diffrent topic, has any of you ever tried ergonomic/vertical mice ?

I used a MS trackball for several years. does that count? shareware-beach.com/photos/J1282752.jpg
What would be really awesome is a mouse with both a small thumb trackball and the usual optical scanner at the bottom.

11:41 AM
My girlfriend has joint disease and she is starting to have pain after a day of working with a regular mouse
Trying to find the most suitable device for her is not that easy

@Kwaio: oddly enough, can't think of anyone who has
some people with trackballs
@Kwaio: superuser.com/questions/30769/… Ivo's post there looks good

Like they say, the best is to give them a try
Just found out zenlap, a specialized website offer 60 days full refund with incl. shipping

11:57 AM
yeah
XD
Almost tempted to suggest a leap ;p

?

basically a motion controller ;p
I'd wait for reviews tho

A word was missing for my understanding ^^
I haven't done deep study of her disease, but it seems she better avoid large gestures, or repeted gestures.

the fruit merchant outside the office was playing with his phantom quadcopter with camera and VR display. awesome

Bob
12:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek can you suggest a new colour or mix? :P

12:34 PM
woot ! 50rep on SU
Can finally comment questions... now to grind in SF

Q: Can't detect my external drive

CreatorI have a Buffalo Ministation HD-PCU2 external 500 GB HDD. It's formatted in ex-fat, since I need to use it on my Mac and my PC both. One day I accidentally unplugged it without properly ejecting it from my office pc. And then it started giving me weird issues. In start it sometimes couldn't get d...

Any help?

@Bob: what do you have on hand? ;p
@Creator: I don't have much experience with exfat, but if there's a linux driver give that a shot
I often find that alternate drivers work when the stock ones don't
