@SimonSheehan Thanks! MS Flight is free overall, you have to buy additional stuff, like planes, etc
but good to know, so I can have it on the Steam Platform

2:53 AM
eh
@OliverSalzburg: I believe he got himself banned from SF before

3:17 AM
Hmm, impressive. File copying continues after putting my laptop to sleep and waking it again... :)

@TomWijsman Win 8 or 7?

Windows 8, I've been moving / deleting tons of data over the last hours because my disk were near full again.
Moving my games to my SSD because I go to a LAN party tomorrow... :)
With a Gaming.SE T-shirt under a Super User sweater.
Hmm, changing page file settings doesn't seem to ask for a reboot in Windows 8.
Guess it removes the file upon the next reboot, because now I have like 16 GB page file which is kinda overkill.
Just because I set the SSD to None and the HDD to System Managed...
Eh well, time to call it a day. See you tomorrow.

@studiohack oh okay, cool, didn't know that! I dunno if I'll play it really.

4:18 AM
Hey all. I've got somewhat of a generic question. End goal is to do something along the lines of Network/Systems Administration, though most of the places I see want minimum of 3-5 years experience or specialized experience. Any advice on how to gain it if I can't seem to find a job to get it? Seems to be a deadly circle.

4:30 AM
@TomWijsman NICE!
@JosephGreenbaum ask in the server fault chat room

 The Comms Room

ServerFault's lobby
IT professionals and such, more of them there ^---

1 hour later…
5:51 AM
Well guys, I'm not gonna be in here too much... Just had an operation done, and I'm off work till Monday or Tuesday

@Luke what kinda operation?

6:17 AM
ping super users.
any idea what anti virus software does Cisco NAC agent recognizes?

6:37 AM
@jokerdino no clue.

oh well
so far, i have ruled out avast and avira from the list.
trying out mcafee now, let's hope this one works out well.

7:23 AM
Updating to the last version seems to allow you to support more,
it might also be the wrong document that I linked because I don't know if this is the exact right product.
Supports both virus scanners that you mentioned...

thanks for your help
but when i have avast and avira, the agent doesn't even recognize them as anti-virus

@jokerdino: Is the agent up-to-date then?

argg, not right now.
i am having a really slow connection that makes it hard to update
is it possible to look into an older version's AV definition?

I see, but I guess that's the step needed to make it work.

is it possible to remove every trace of all the antivirus i have installed so far?
i have a feeling that the remnants are preventing me from installing mcafee.

7:38 AM
@jokerdino: Moment, making URL smaller because with all the search parameters it add it's too long to paste here.
@jokerdino: bitly.com/HPiyt5
There it lists some. If you don't trust me you can see the expanded URL with: bitly.com/HPiyt5+

it is still loading... :/
i might try cisco security agent. is it still supported?
mind you, my network is too slow the previous link hasn't been loaded yet.
i can't even google about cisco security agent.

This is a link to 45, problem is that that page is way too long for you I think.
It still shows Avast and Avira and all that.
Also lists AVG, perhaps try that one?

i'll try that one then.
you have any idea about clearing out the previous installs?

7:53 AM
Not really, just using the software thing of the control panel?
Perhaps products like Revo Uninstaller and similar ones could help clean things left behind.

that still leaves traces.

Or CCleaner to clean broken references.

i have ccleaner installed but i need something more than that.
i would like to try revo uninstaller though

8:21 AM
@TomWijsman Thanks for your help. The slow connection has been a major inhibitor and I have switched to Ubuntu for the time being. I will try your suggestions again in the future.
I have bookmarked the conversation for future reference.

@TomWijsman :P

6 hours later…
2:04 PM
@TomWijsman Is Reverse Engineering a part of Computer Science course ?

2:25 PM
@HackToHell Nope.
At least not in our country...

not in most places
Its one of those arcane things you pick up once you got your level 1 computer scientist. ;p

0_o then how is anyone supposed to learn it ?

well
look around, read up...
assembly language skill helps, and many CS courses do that
unrelatedly
gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout fallout 1 free on gog today
old, muchly awesome game

2:51 PM
@HackToHell, I had a CS assignment where I had to defuse a "binary bomb"

pretty close to reverse engineering

@soandos Binary Bomb ?

6 stages, you have to put in the correct code for each

@JourneymanGeek Reading assembly language and tearing up my head 0_o
@soandos if you enter the wrong code ? BSOD ?

2:52 PM
only way to find out the code is by looking at in a disassembler (objdump is what I used)
@HackToHell, it was an assignement, so no, it just said "You failed"

@soandos I am trying similar stuff with Olly, it's been a while and I have forgotten the basics, tearing my head up with registers and flags :D. It's insanely complicated and interesting :)

@HackToHell not really sure what Olly is, but why not try to use a debugger to step through? Then you can just use that to print out the values in the registers at a certain point.

@soandos It's a debugger, Olly Debugger, I am still in the basics ...

@HackToHell ah, why not use something like GDB?

@soandos I am in Windows, I can run GDB, but it needs minGW.

2:58 PM
lol
get mingw then!

why?

GDB is the standard debugger

well for one thing gdb is well understood

with few exceptions (like those that are built into IDE)

and ya, knowing assembly is essential, apparently
(but what do i know, the most complex thing i've written is a basic bash screenscraper that uses w3c ;p)

3:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek, what is a real use case for it?

@JourneymanGeek :p DO not like it, runs forever, besides I have ubuntu.

@soandos: well, to reverse enginner, you run a disassembler, look at the output, and work out what it does, don't you?

I am used to Olly, windows, controls, keyboard shortcuts from using it several months ago...

GDB works in ubuntu...

I prefer Windows

3:01 PM
All this is theoratical to me. I'm not (yet) a coder, and software reverse enginnering isn't my thing ;p

@JourneymanGeek, yes, but I don't want to reverse engeneer anything in the real world. That is usually stealling

@soandos: not always!

@HackToHell, you have visual studios?
@JourneymanGeek when not (other than for homework and the like)

@soandos yes, VS 2010.

At a very simple level, reverse engineered drivers are useful

3:02 PM
@HackToHell, that has a nice debugger as well

@soandos: case in point? The blackwidow question i asked

@JourneymanGeek, link please?

or drivers for hardware that isn't supported very well in non windows OSes

Besides from Olly, I can right a function idk and see about it ...

also, drivers scare me

Q: Getting macro keys from a Razer BlackWidow to work on Linux

Journeyman GeekI picked up a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate that has additional keys meant for macros that are set using a tool that's installed on Windows. I'm assuming that these aren't some fancypants joojoo keys and should emit scancodes like any other keys. Firstly, is there a standard way to check these scanc...

One of my favorite questions ever

@soandos Never used that one b4, other than on my pointless C# programs.

@HackToHell, I would strongly advice using a standard debugger

@soandos: very clean, basic, simple reverse engineering. And practically speaking, Razer has gained more than its lost here

@JourneymanGeek true

samba would be another example

3:04 PM
Or Mono I guess

we're talking about a higher level here though
neither of them would have disassembled MS code

No idea how they did it, but I would assume that is how it would be done

well, in theory?
Initially use microsoft's own documentation
and other people's ones
but in general disassembly might be avoided, least by the people doing the coding

I suppose it is possible, but it would be a lot faster just to change the non portable code

well the idea is to understand what it does

3:07 PM
lists for example should be totally portable (no system calls)

but if you had the same person doing both, the code would be tainted

I don't follow

Finds a site dedicated to reversing :) :) tuts4you.com

Clean room design (also known as the Chinese wall technique) is the method of copying a design by reverse engineering and then recreating it without infringing any of the copyrights and trade secrets associated with the original design. Clean room design is useful as a defense against copyright and trade secret infringement because it relies on independent invention. However, because independent invention is not a defense against patents, clean room designs typically cannot be used to circumvent patent restrictions. The term implies that the design team works in an environment that is '...
this is legitimate reverse engineering

3:09 PM
I guess
just not something I see I suppose

Now, software is tricky
but if you wanted to reverse engineer a protocol
you could listen in to how two clients talk
and have some write a specification
for example "each transmission starts with ehlo"

Protocols are designed to be easily implemented (as rule). That is why the specs are so so long

yes!
but not all are properly documented
or a filetype
We have file X. We expect it to look like this!

openoffice is having some trouble

3:11 PM
basically

LO seems to handle docx a lot better than it used to

Don't get me wrong, they are pretty good, but for the newer features? not really there yet

@JourneymanGeek It stills loads it all wrong most of the time

I'm mostly MS office right now
either starter or 2007

3:11 PM

Me to. Been there for a while

though i'm playing with a trial version on thinapp

electron

lol
ya
(thinapp is nice. other than needing a clean VM to run it in)

not bad. I am trying to slowly migrate OSes

3:12 PM
I know, it's amazing it's being asked though

problem is, I want to migrate to windows 8 and ubuntu 12.04 at the same time

lol
this is why i have spare hardware ;p

I have them both in VMs
they both work fine
just not really getting to know them as well as I want to

not the same
but i can throw an arbitrary os on a system, play with it
and image back a known working os into it ;p

true

3:26 PM
I got overpowered by this lifehacker.com/5899592/overthinking-and-your-child%20like-mind @Sathya 3 idiots (torrented)
:D
Wait, Linus Trovald has supreme authority over Linux ? youtube.com/watch?v=yVpbFMhOAwE really ?

lol ?
I do not understand @JourneymanGeek :(

well, then, you do not!
also, i love that pizza example

@JourneymanGeek yeah, did u see 3 idiots ?

though i also like the one where you need to cut a square cake into 8 equal pieces ;p
nope
its hindi ;p
i don't even watch tamil movies!

3:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek There is an english subbed version :P there's also an tamil movie dub of it .. with vijay

dub or dubba? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Nothing is worth watching :P

@JourneymanGeek :P :P
Interesting you have Tamil slang...

(for those who don't speak tamil dabba = container. a dabba movie is one thats horrible and empty)
... duh
it IS my mother tongue

3:41 PM
I thought it will be like Sri Lankan Tamil :P

and i do pick up a bit here and there. Just not the most up to date slang ;p
naw
I speak what's probably the equivilent of a recieved accent in tamil
so people either have no idea what the accent is, or understand it to be bramin tamil
I can't do the yaalpaanam accent

there's brahmin tamil ? and yaalpaanam accent ??

lol
... duh
Well there's two sorts

Guess I am worse ;p

the one most people take as bramin tamil is a reigional one
er.. i can't remember the place
but there's also the almost accent free one a lot of people use
I don't really speak local accented tamil either
In fact i didn't quite get a lot of the local slang until i got to army
stuff like "enna mike?"

3:45 PM
lol

or "ammanvaam" ?
enna mike = yo DUDE!

@JourneymanGeek That's Chennai tamil i think, i am not used to it..

lol
naw
chennai is different

or some other city

its very impolite ;p
compare it to the coimbature accent
even to kids, they use the polite form
least i think they do ;p
I follow that a lot, just to confuse people. Especially when i act all innocent on the phone to telemarketers...

3:48 PM
;p most kids seem to know more bad words than me :D
@JourneymanGeek Cruel :P

lol
That was fun
"Would you like to buy fish oil?" "No, we're vegitatian"
"What about bovine colestrum"
"No.. its what little cows drink... poor things"
lady almost shit herself laughing

lol

(for full effect "Ellangai, maatukutti kudikum.. athu paavam... onnum erukaathu"
and yea, i PURPOSELY said "baby cow" when i should have said calf

lol
baby cow in tamil == impolite

lol
maatukutti is polite
but wrong
but i was VERY INTENTIONALLY trying to sound as innocent as possible ;p

3:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek errumaimattu kutti breaks the polite barrier

yes

buffalo are the issue here
not the mattu kutti
the moment you call someone an erumai, or use that, without an actual buffalo its impolite
;p

ya.. now why are we taking abt bad words :D

lol
well
what i know as far as those go is mild
;p

3:55 PM
ya the real baddies are not out yet

lol
i don;t know much
hokkien is my cussing language of choice
along with half a dozen sci fi languages

@JourneymanGeek chinese ?

lol
hokkien is a dialect of chinese
some say it is the most beautiful language to swear in

lol

it has the added advantage of sounding hillarious with a fake english accent
which i did when i was. ORDERED. to swear more in the army
so i did. With an accent. so. bad. everyone burst out laughing

3:58 PM
ORDERED ? Singapore is so small that having an army is amusing ...

lol
conscripted
did my 2 years. 8 years in peace, now they call me back ;p
on the bright side, once i get everything replaced (in a year or two) i can abuse the hell out my my equipment allowance ;p

2 years in the army ? yuk
@JourneymanGeek Did you get an AK 47 ? or an Mp 15 ?

lol
m16/sar21
we're mostly using nato compatible gear so we wouldn't use AKs or 7.62 russian rounds

@JourneymanGeek You have an m16, totally worth 2 yrs of army

lol
have?
naw, we draw a weapon as needed and return it
i haven't touched a gun in a decade ;p

4:03 PM
You cannot even have it in your house ? ;p that sucks what are u supposed to do when aliens attack run to the base ;p ...

lol
No
We're not the swiss ;p
who DO issue soldiers with personal weapons

coool

anyway, if people owned guns, they'd need proper lockers and such
keep kids from playing with them
too much work ;p

brb mom's scolding

what next, @JourneymanGeek and @HackToHell speaking to each other in Tamil? :P
@HackToHell he is called BDFL...

4:07 PM
lol
yes ;p
I still haven't worked out if i actually know @HackToHell ;p

4:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek Why ?
I feel the same way about everyone, here, my friends.
@Sathya cool

lol
@HackToHell: well my aunt mentioned her nephew was on SU when my brother and mom were last in india ;p
no, like meatspace know
not cyberspace know ;p

I still do not get you, you think I am that nephew ಠ_ಠ ?

lol
plausible!
thats what i'm trying to work out
same name, too ;p
ahh joy. I think i just killed chat ;p

4:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek Gowtham? , besides, my mom does not even know about SU

XD
k ;p
ya
XD
anyway, mystery solved

:)
I am too going to sleep bye ..

4:56 PM
I shall leave before 3 beers get the best of me. G'night
@JourneymanGeek O_o

lol
@Sathya: oh i just mostly confirmed that i don't know hacktohell IRL ;p

@JourneymanGeek that;s good :P imagine if @hacktohell was your 3rd cousin twice removed...

lol
actually....
well no, it would be my aunt's nephew, on the other side

@JourneymanGeek hehe..

5:36 PM
@Sathya Got 6 ingrown toenails removed, and lots of T3's stuffed in me
