surely a company hiring experienced techs/troubleshooters would pay me more than i'm making in my current job >_>

Do you guys think I kept the response to this comment appropriate enough?
Oops, wiped out my response by reporting it... >_<
Well, feel free to report along then. :D
Ah, I was wondering
comment score below threshold good enough.
weird, I can see your comment now
IMO, way too nice :P
Is there a way to create a chat room with a user if he posts an "answer"

A: How to Diagnose a Pre-Operating System Load or Hardware Issue

kimmmI am trying to make the livecd work, but i am getting stuck at the missing operating system screen. I am not a programmer and this is my first atempt to use it. I have followed the instructions to make a liveCD with tails. I have syncronized as well and it shows the message that is syncronized. ...

00:57
half the people who're commenting there have no idea how SE works
is what I am talking about
Am I the only guy who spends time hanging out in a community before I do anything?
@soandos: was wondering about that one
@r.tanner.f Think they didn't take the report serious.
Must read if you're into security... wired.com/threatlevel/2012/10/dkim-vulnerability-widespread (cc @allquixotic, if you didn't see this pass by already)
01:18
@TomWijsman thanks Tom, you're a hero
i'll tell my security folks in operations at work
i think we use DKIM
just proof that the things we rely on that we think are "secure" aren't necessarily so
there's always details under the surface
with this factorization arms race, we'll be using 1 MiB keys before long. :-/
sure, the complexity grows extremely fast; but so does Moore's Law.
Yeah, it's a constant fight. The scary thing with this one is that it makes social engineering extremely easy for a lot of those companies who don't have large enough key sizes...
01:34
@TomWijsman yeah, until they do the proper revoke and re-publish of stronger keys
thing is, most people who would actually abuse this probably don't have the ability to write in "stilted" English: that is, extremely correct grammar, very formal language
I only trust unsolicited emails if they come in stilted English and are virtually free of typos; I can very easily detect common typos generated by people with certain native languages because the mistakes are so common
(I also check the mail headers to make sure)
I don't understand how this fools ANY mail programs though
step 1: random remote server establishes TCP socket on the SMTP port. EHLO and all that. bark bark.
step 2: SMTP server receiving email does a DNS query on the IP address of the remote SMTP server. If it ain't paypal's DNS, then it ain't paypal's mail server. Dummy!
shouldn't even need DKIM if the DNS entries can be trusted.
and anyway, DKIM might just be an additional level of security on top of DNS verification. you should automatically reject the email if it claims to be from paypal.com but the DNS of the IP either doesn't resolve, or resolves to something like ip-188-42-33-39.fla.comcast.net
@allquixotic: I have been known to track down postal addresses and other information when mailed
my dad gets a persistant set of scammers to do with an investment he made.
I've scared off one. Worked out the other is a 'law firm' in a area of boston that dosen't look like it has law forums or any buildings at all.
I don't entirely trust any one piece of information in the internet
defense in depth is nice, though.... a secure, reliable DNS system is a good start; DKIM rounds out the deal. Tack on protocol encryption (TLS) and you've got a pretty good thing going. Cap it off with identity verification via mutual PGP (encrypted email) and it's really, really secure.
Just make sure to use the largest key sizes that the key generation program supports. Always. And always generate keys using a newish version of the program.
I've heard of reducing key sizes for performance. PAH. If that's such a big issue, buy a hardware crypto module and stick it in a PCIe port.
ridiculous number of signs per second
waaaaaaaaaay more than even the hardware crypto stuff on recent intel ISAs
02:03
@allquixotic: people are the weakest/easiest link in any system
I'd probably check any hypothetical job offer to see if the person who contacted me, or the company that contacted me exists. I'd ask about the role to see if they know as much as a HR person should, and so on.

Question about superuser.com/questions/492446/… if I may. I'm on Windows 8 RTM at home, local account, admin shares are enabled. Think I should worry?
02:41
I personally have no clue. >_>
I'd guess from reading the answers that, If you get compromised, or a system in your network was, it'd be a problem
but then you'd have another problem to worry about too
Well, thanks. :) I was a little concerned because everybody seems convinced that Windows 8 RTM disables the admin shares yet everywhere I look, that isn't the case. I'm going to go with the assumption that it's expected behavior. Thanks again.
I haven't even checked ;p
though my windows 8 system is running through a very odd setup

I love you guys. /random

catonmat.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/… the disclaimer on the second page is hillarious
03:40
@TomWijsman @soandos : meta.superuser.com/questions/5757/… prolly should bring this to your attention, since its about a question that both of you approved.
@JourneymanGeek I added it simply because of the last line in the post. Didn't realize it would be so controversial :P
@soandos: controversial? no, excuse for a test case to set policy? yes
I guess. I think there are many more clear cut cases
Feel free to edit them in
sounds like a recipe for flooding really :(
03:43
precisely
expecially if anyone (no one in particular) decides it may be a way to qualify for the edits tile
which it isn't ;p
@soandos Same reason. :D
loool
close as dupe!
@JourneymanGeek will that even work? I would have assumed that 1) retags don't count, and 2) its not a win 8 question when you edit it
@soandos: prolly won't. Not intending to test it out, nor is it possible for me.
Same here
03:46
I prolly should try to get a bounty tile next
prolly both
ooh, someone got the share a link tile
@JourneymanGeek feel free to answer my win 8 question :)

Q: File associations in windows 8

soandosWhen I set a program to open a specific file type by default, it works (like Word 2013 for PDFs). sounds good. No pressure though ;)

I'd note word 2013 is a massively crashy piece of crap that shat itself when I updated
They're right... HERE!
@JourneymanGeek it has been very good to me so far
@TomWijsman I've even seen them
I just don't understand what Moab wanted me to look for
we should ask "questions" originally tagged and then re-tag them to and set a huge bounty and notify ppl here... lol... "in-group" ftw
@allquixotic And how are you going to deal with duplicates?
@TomWijsman using the same fallacious logic I used to think that it'd be acceptable to have in-group questions? ;p
03:55

Let's turn that into Metro Apps that have gone off the screen. :P
I dragged it down and now I can't drag it back up!
03:57
> With dual monitors, one rotated 90 degrees, how can I get windows to line up correctly?
Meh, translating them to Metro makes up for silly questions.
@allquixotic: 'in group questions' ?
@TomWijsman: no idea. I'd ask on meta, but I've not actually gotten any answers yet, other than the one on the broken site page
@JourneymanGeek yeah, questions targeted for answering by Root Access regulars :D
@allquixotic: oh, I'd see it another way
We're documenting questions that got answered so people outside RA can benefit ;p

Q: Where can I see how much space Marketplace apps consume on my hard drive?

Tom WijsmanGoing in the Marketplace is all fun and that, but do I know which of the apps I've downloaded is consuming the most space on my hard drive? Are their binaries physicall spread over multiple folders in different locations, or are they properly packed together?

Ha!
Now I can't actually confirm any answer as I'm running Gentoo. >_<
@allquixotic Hmm, it's 6AM here and I'm not tired, dunno how that happened...
Thought it was only 3AM, been gaming too long I guess.

Q: Windows 8 - Calculating available storage (Size of individual Apps)

AbhishekGirishFor someone who is short on storage space (like on a Macbook Air -128 GB - Dual partition), each app counts towards storage. And what is the easiest way to find out?

Grrr....
Perhaps one should ask What do I need to do to get rid of Desktop Mode in Windows 8?
04:18
@TomWijsman Perhaps you should ask "What do I need to do to determine which questions haven't yet been asked for ?
04:56
lol
@allquixotic: I could swear most of the good questions have been asked already
though, good to see some of the folk who were only answering win-8 questions started fanning out
So, when is windows 8 releasing?

There's a batch script to register it as a tile on Modern UI, apparently
had a bounty on for 5 days
and not a single vote to close
07:27
If it was the default, it would launch in modernUI. It dosen't cause the modernUI portion is broken. If you really feel this question should be reopened, consider asking on meta. I VERY strongly feel this is an exact dupe, and the answer dosen't work as is, anyhow. — Journeyman Geek 1 hour ago
@Bob: you could answer @Sathya's question to that effect
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ok, I'll go set up a Win8 VirtualBox so I can actually test it first :P
@Sathya: ipads are on topic ;p
not yet..
@Bob: I wouldn't mind checking and screenshotting for you If I had the details and I wasn't currently backing it up to test something potentially horribly risky
@Sathya: On the other hand, its clear product recommendation ;p
I should be done backing up in a minute, then need to re-mount the VHD and boot
@JourneymanGeek true, and apple.se does them to some extent

A: Can I disconnect a USB drive while copying is paused in Windows 8?

avirkYou can safely remove after pausing the USB data transfer so there is no chance to corrupt your device partition and even not the data. Edit: Sorry I forget to mention I disconnected the device and reconnected it and resume the copy process without any problem.

07:41
but that looks identical to what I tried at first glance

@jou is that file name is improper for SU?
@avirk: I think its just funny, honestly
non active windows + obviously pirated file
blurring out the file name wouldn't be a bad idea tho
@jou yep I'm on enterprise edition for trial have not the evaluation copy
@avirk: i thought that was the same. Mine is just counting down 90 days
no one notices cause I very carefully crop my screenshots ;)

avirkMay be there are more and you know it but at this time I got this one in Windows explorer. Just select the file by clicking on it and then press Alt+V now the under the "View" menu you will see the options and with these options you will see their shortcuts respectively. 07:44
@JourneymanGeek @avirk the ent. edition isn't the problem, the pirated file is.
@jou check out my that ans
@sathya you can edit it for me :-)
@avirk: looks good, but needs a SMALL tweak
@sathya most people download pirated movies so what is a big deal?
There
they do? ;p
@jou what tweak?

lol, you didn't end one of the <kbd> tags
@avirk congrats, you just admitted to piracy. On record. With Google Indexing it.
@jou you can do it :-)

@JourneymanGeek I'll try once VBox stops freezing up my computer :P

might be fast boot thing, actually
I donno, my VHD dosen't do that

ah, there it is, shutdown /s /t 00 /full
annnd I forgot to install RST drivers

Q: Re-open or merge request

Graham WagerI'd like to request that this question is reviewed. I don't feel that the question marked as such is in fact an exact duplicate, as this question was created to discover the rather hidden official way (it took me a week to stumble over it back in the preview days) of actually shutting down a Wind...

I'm a bit meh on this. I'm quite certain a lot of questions are intentionally slightly altered derivatives of existing ones
Bob
Bob
ok, RST drivers won't install unless I boot off the VHD. I hope nothing messes up :\
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek FMI?
for my info
Bob
Bob
ok, reboot time
fingers crossed and all
@JourneymanGeek I'll be honest, I did search this before I posted it, and skipped over the "keyboard shortcut" post as that wasn't what I was looking for - and would imagine people with the same question would too. However that's why I suggested an edit & merge instead
It wasn't a case of I saw it, read it and re-hashed it
@GrahamWager: Don't mind me, I'm just a grouchy oldtimer ;p
and I mean in general
09:35
@JourneymanGeek ahh okay :P no problem! lol
this isn't the only question that got closed due to 'similarness'. I think we'll have to deal with that with respect to the preview and non preview question eventually
Bob

gah... can't boot :(
hmm, intel RST and vhd boot no likey each other? :/
Bob
Bob
no, not that
haven't managed to install RST yet
apparently it's not happy with migrating from a VM environment
hm
that would do it
I just used imagex

Bob

09:38
Yea, going to go try that now :\
Yeah I can understand that, I've never been 100% sure on the pre-/release customs to be honest! :)
wait, you use visualbcd right?
@GrahamWager: this is.. not a usual situation ;p
I mean, there was a little planning about it, but I think i sorta missed the announcement about the contest until the contest started ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek EasyBCD
(and lets admit it, that drove a HELL of a lot of traffic)
@Bob: damn. I know that works. not fun ;p
Bob
Bob
09:40
Visual BCD does let you add a VHD boot, but you have to configure the elements yourself... which I'm not too sure about
(and thats the guide that gave me the Idea. I did, of course document my own work, hoping something would blow up for more fun :/)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Gah, I'll just use EasyBCD with imagex
:P
Bob
Bob
If you wanted something to blow up, you could've done the VM thing...
thats documented on SU
oh, not enough ram
Bob
Bob
09:42
I could probably fiddle and make it work, but can't be bothered
and windows 8 and VMs are a nightmare
Bob

eh, it actually works really nicely in the VM
charms bar, man
Bob
Bob
and that's without guest additions
It sure did haha, hottest question of SE until it was closed :P never imagined that!
09:43
which one?
the shutdown one
Bob

@JourneymanGeek Link?
I can't seem to find it:\
@GrahamWager: Well, LOTS of traffic/rep flying around, it was bound to happen ;p

Q: How would I do a VHD install of Windows 8 from Windows 7

Journeyman GeekI'm currently waiting on my shiny new system to run Windows 8 on. I have an older system that has Windows 7 installed now on which I'd like to try Windows 8 on in the meanwhile.
