12:01 AM
anyone have a tool they like to use to convert PDF to plain text?
(free, please) for Windows 7

@Paul: and corner cutting - there's no hard drive bay
the hard drive is screwed vertically into the side of the case

@studiohack well if you're asking, the rest of us are sunk, eh? (;

@RebeccaChernoff I figured it out :) just copy/paste!
now I'm trying to figure out the Windows command to blank my monitor

12:16 AM
I saw, looking into it.

@RebeccaChernoff k, thanks!

I don't think there's a standard one

so, this missing drive letter thing is getting annoying >_<
throws things at Windows
6

@studiohack: grab nircmd

Evening all

12:19 AM
hey @SimonSheehan :)
and you too @JourneymanGeek

Hows it going @studiohack ?

okay... solved it though, by copy/pasting in Foxit
pretty good @SimonSheehan
um question. how do I figure out the command for blanking my display in WIndows? I have a app launcher, and I want to create a new command to blank my monitor.
I think I'll search and then ask on SU - could be a good question

I'd like to know as well

@studiohack: by blanking, do you mean switch off?

12:21 AM
Since google searches mostly bring up errors

@JourneymanGeek yeah

I'm possibly switching app launchers, one has that built in, the other doesn't. so for multiple purposes, I want to know

“C:\path\to\nircmd.exe” cmdwait 1000 monitor off
Well thats handy to know

12:22 AM
yes, but you'd need to install nircmd

ah, I need NirCMD again :P

and for gott's sake, CUSTOM PATHS!

freaky @JourneymanGeek, you just suggested it
what?

lol
@studiohack: i did. earlier
If you have commonly used CLI apps, create a folder, add it to path, throw it in there
then you don't need to worry about the /path/to/ nonsense ;p

Definitely need to take the laptop to school tomorrow... the Pentium 4 is killing my work flow

12:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek not sure what you mean?
is that related with copying it into the Windows Directory?

@studiohack: If you add a folder (say c:/pathtools/) to your path, you can simply type in commandfoo, anywhere, instead of c:/pathtools/commandfoo
Its the 'proper' way to do it

Now I'm massively confused

instead of moving everything to windows, where it dosen't belong, you create a folder with the same effect
then you can put in utils there, and have the same effect as throwing them into the windows directory

basically create a folder just for Nircmd? and put it somewhere permanent? say my docs?

and simply copy them over should you need to
ya, pretty much, and add it to your path
and you can throw other things there too

12:27 AM
my path? confused, sorry

hey, i wrote a blog post on it!
One second!

I create a new path, separate from Windows?
@SimonSheehan what?
okay

Ok... now, the reason that you can run something that's in the windows folder is the windows folder is in 'path'

Posted by Simon Sheehan on June 6th, 2011

Being an avid computer user for years now, the PATH is something that has crossed me quite a few times now. So when I saw this question, it was time to put my learning hat on.

So now that we know what the PATH is, where are these things set? With a quick look around, I found it was easily found on Windows 7, by simply popping open the Start Menu and typing in “Environment.” The first option was Edit environment variables for your account. Click it, and here we are:

Let’s say I wanted to add my own, for a folder I frequently visit. I shall use eclipse for example. Currently my eclipse folder is located in C:UsersSimoneclipse. I hit NEW, and add in this: …

12:27 AM
yes, that!

@JourneymanGeek okay
@SimonSheehan checking it out, thanks! :)

:) Blog to the rescue
All the images are broken currently

@SimonSheehan: the images seem broken
oops ;p

@SimonSheehan because of the migration
blame @RebeccaChernoff and @Zypher
:P

No, its my fault
Their all dropbox links, I cleaned my dropbox up and organized it.

12:29 AM
you're hotlinking from the blog to your own dropbox?

really?
> C:UsersSimoneclipse

It was a long time ago before I had image upload options.
And didnt understand imgur.

@SimonSheehan oh okay. :P
@RebeccaChernoff never mind :)

So that's entirely my fault, I will clean it up ASAP

@studiohack: github.com/bmatzelle/gow/wiki this adds itself to path, so say, the *nix ls just works, and can be used where dir is

12:31 AM
@SimonSheehan okay, let me know... I'll re read it with the screenshots, as I'm slightly confused :P

Once I've reinstalled dropbox to rescue the images anyway

Sorry about that guys.

no worries, glad we caught it @SimonSheehan

but can we still blame me? ya know, because we can. q:

12:31 AM
sure, sure!

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah I noticed it about a week ago :/

@studiohack: what version of windows are you on?

@JourneymanGeek Win7

go to control panel -> system -> edit environment variable
take a look at "Path" there
thats basically anything that runs sans exact path

so variable name is what I'll type in order to get to NirCmd?
like %Nir%
and the value is the path?
or is that the folder

12:48 AM
The folder
Like journeyman suggested, it is good to solve this once, so create a c:\utils folder, add it to your path, and stick nircmd, procmon, 7z or whatever else you use in this folder
Then forever more it will Just Work™

I don't understand how adding exe's to that will work?
I just type what to get it to work? why wouldn't I create a shortcut or search for it?

This is really so that you can run these things from Start/Run or from cmd without typing in the path

do I edit PATH or create new?

edit PATH, the existing entries in the path are vital
So just add it to the end
(note that all this is optional to your original question)

sorry... this is epicly confusing. I can't get the same answer anywhere. In the box that comes up in Win7, I can edit or do New
PATH is blank for me, when I hit edit, the value fields are empty
typing %PATH% takes me to my user folder

1:01 AM
Holy, RAM is REALLY cheap

@studiohack are you editing variables for yourself or System?

@RebeccaChernoff myself at the moment, but I'm so very confused
PATH is blank for user

yeah, but check the bottom System section (:

@SimonSheehan about half off what DDR2 is
@RebeccaChernoff yeah, but all that's there is Path which points to something AMD related
as in, the only path related thing is Path

mm, also, I thought of an app category I need your excellent recommendations for! (:

1:05 AM
okay! someting to get my mind of all this PATH stuff :P

ocr scanning + tagging stuff so I can scan bills and such in...don't want just folders...want to be able to assign multiple tags...but want the ocr included in searching (:
I dunno what you're trying to do...just jumping in the middle q:

@RebeccaChernoff hmmm.... never found anything good for OCRing, then again, I haven't used OCR - I'll look around
do you want something that actually makes the image text searchable or just something to scan images and tag with?

@studiohack there you go being worthless again q:

@RebeccaChernoff I'm not a business user :) at work, we used one, but I can't remember the name of it and I'm not sure if it has tagging capabilities

it'd be nice for full ocr/text searching...just because that'd mean it's less I'd have to put in a notes field or something like that
I do want tagging - [2012] [Uverse] [utilities] all on the same bill for instance
or categories, or whatever

1:11 AM
complicated to search for - you mind if I ask on SU, or would you like to ask (and get rep ;P)

I've been searching on things like "digital filing"...turns up some. most seem to charge out the wazoo for cloud backup

I'm trying to find a "receipt OCR" system

yeah, receipts...bills...filing...several use cases could fit

@RebeccaChernoff one option - though I don't think you want an online solution - shoeboxed.com
and I don't think it quite fits your criteria
$400! looks cool: neat.com/products/neatdesk

well, this is certainly going to include personal/sensitive data...
online backup would obviously be great...but security is definitely a concern
I mean, I'm thinking of things like my tax returns (ssn), bank statements (credit card number) etc.

1:16 AM
right...
any of the two look okay?
I'll keep looking
you'll want stuff with like encryption too probably

I've seen the neatdesk commercials. I already have a scanner(/printer combo)

okay
too bad you can't get the software itself (Neat) @RebeccaChernoff
that's an upgrade URL - looking if you can get it separately (for hopefully a lot cheaper)

something somewhat promising I've found is officedrop.com
Ideally what I'd want is something I can just scan into an "inbox" of sorts, then go in and categorize weekly or something.

@RebeccaChernoff that does look promising

the free plan is too limited though >_<
I dunno about only 3 search results...and the small ocr per month

1:22 AM
The Neat thingy is a dead end, they offer the software separate for Macs only - for Windows you have to get a scanner

sorta... offers OCR, but I don't know how organized it could be
see the features

hmm, thought expensify was something different

hence why I said "sorta" @RebeccaChernoff

yeah, don't think it really fits

1:29 AM
k.
PaperPort by Nuance @RebeccaChernoff: nuance.com/for-business/by-product/paperport/index.htm
for individuals is $100 (bottom of page)
> PaperPort Anywhere, our new service for secure document access, provides the benefits of your own document website in the cloud, while delivering free mobile applications with PaperPort’s proven capabilities for desktop document management on the PC.
$110 bucks for physical copy: shop.nuance.com/… or $99 for download.

does seem good. I'm a cheap-skate, so not much a fan of the $100. I wonder if its folder only though, kind seems like it.

I'm very much of a cheap-skate myself @RebeccaChernoff, so I relate. I dislike paying for most software.
if you get it, you can use a desktop search, and keep all your bills and stuff in one folder, and just search that folder

I want to be able to search on things beside ocr text though

no tags, still a pain. maybe you could name all your Tax Returns with Taxes and when you search for taxes, you'll get it
right... I get it
asking Nuance live chat to confirm

1:45 AM
OfficeDrop really does sound perfect, but it's an ongoing $100/yr sigh

a year?! man. I hate subscription things

50 pages/mo isn't enough ongoing, and that's not counting the backfill I'd want to do. The 1gb of searchable storage would last awhile, but not forever

fits, but expensive :(

well, I don't know that there is too much more out there

1:59 AM
yeah ):
that surprises me

not a priority for most people, I suspect

Do we get spam bots that copy and paste questions from other Q&A sites? Example:
0
Q: Where Auto Summarize Tool In Word 2010?

ElhamI have been able to fine directions for finding and adding auto summarize in Word 2007, however I cannot find it anywhere in the docs or online. Please advise!

good catch!

@iglvzx plenty, not always spam bots

@Sathya It's strange that they would copy and paste an already solved question.

@iglvzx people are weird.

@Sathya lol

6:17 AM
Oh, NeatReceipts looks cool. I could actually make quite a use for that kind of thing.
And I don't have a scanner so that works for me. :P

1 hour later…
7:33 AM
Just got an alert for onstartups, but, I can't get to it :/
the top one... not where the tool tip is :/ oh well... off to work.

Hi.

1 hour later…
6:53 PM
Anybody else have problems with Stack Exchange's CDN?
Slow for half an hour and just when I ask it speeds up. Typical.
Or maybe not...

wow that is slow
not having that issue here

It's not on every request, but it's always the same files, stub.js and all.css
I thought I recently saw a related topic on one of the Metas, requesting more information, but I can't find it...

looks like stub.js takes less than 4 ms on my system
wait a sec
why was it not cached?

It was. 304 not modified.

A cached resource took that long to load?

6:58 PM
Cool huh?

really bizzare...
almost like oyu want a cache miss in that case...

To prevent cries of "Use a real browser" in repeated it in Chrome.

@DanielBeck USE A REAL BROWSER! err ... ahem :)

Although that particular page load was uncharacteristically slow to be honest.

What in particular are you loading? SU is about as responsive as I remember it being.

7:04 PM
The code on mine is a 200, not a 304
not sure why yours is different

@sidran32 Index page.

@DanielBeck Ah. I can check in IE9. It's what I got on my laptop.

@soandos For which resource? I loaded the index page in Chrome shortly after the first request, and it's cached in ~5 minute intervals, so that's why the second screenshot is 304 with /

both of them

@soandos The slow files from the CDN?

7:06 PM
Yes. I get a code 200 for them
not a 304
to be honest, I don't know the difference between the two codes

They're cached. My browser sends the previously loaded timestamp, and the server recognizes that it didn't change in the meantime.
The response doesn't have a body, only a header that basically says "use whatever you have cached, it's current"

both 200 and 304 are for cached data

Hm. Dunno. Seems fine to me.

@soandos 200 OK is returned when you actually receive the resource.

I don't know why you are seeing that but I'm not. shrugs

7:09 PM
Chrome says it came from the cache

@soandos For a 200 reply?

yup

Where can you see that?

1 sec

i've got a hardware question is this place ok for it?

7:12 PM
Sure
(generally)

i'm getting this motherboard D525MW
and need to know what RAM to get for it
those are 2 different links there.. useful
but it specifies a particular SDRAM organization
I would like to get some RAM preferably from ebay but New. And the listings don't mention the SDRAM organisation

@barlop What do you mean by "SDRAM organization"?

anything from here is good

well that's the term used on the links

Random question: If you have a Windows XP machine with folder windows open but minimized for a long time, and also a significantly fragmented disk, when you restore one of them, would the delay in window refreshing be due to the fragmentation or more due to the computer paging in memory?

7:15 PM
i'd bet on paging or some other factor. I've often heard defragging often does'nt make such a big difference
though don't know maybe defragging can help but I have a slight doubt that it'd make such a difference

@sidran32, doubtful, it is not loading all of the data in the windows, but rather the part of explorer.exe's memory that shows it

@sidran32 Paging.

That was my guess. I won't waste time defragging then.
It's a shared work computer and it's where I'm doing my work anyway. :P

we are not talking about a lot of data, and the process is almost never paged out to disk

@soandos I can't find those ones on ebay
they are very specific

7:17 PM
@barlop, really?

@sidran32 The disk hasn't been turned off though?

@DanielBeck Nope. Thing is, I also see delays when creating a folder, but only initially. It could just be paging part of the memory though..

@soandos kind of yes. Some of those model numbers pop up on ebay but not for RAM that fits!
and no doubt many ram model numbers would fit but aren't listed.

how about these

@soandos that might help .. i could google for info about those models and the sdram organization of them

7:20 PM
just becuase I don't know anything about this really, have you tried talking to intel?

Delays anyway... but just had a thought. It's all under version control with TortoisSVN and it's about 10 MB of files + subfolders, so that's probably what it is...

@soandos nice idea

One of my answers just got downvoted. Should I ragequit? </sarcasm> ;)

@sidran32, did someone do that recently?

@soandos Yes. Though I know why he did. He commented and it made sense. I just was playing off the recent meta post about the purposes of voting. :P

7:35 PM
Who was it?

Why? I'm not mad. Just was making a joke.
:P

just curious

Dave Becker
Don't hurt him :P
I even upvoted his post. :P

Hello, Does anyone knows why I got downvotes here?

I don't know.
@Gigili I answered it anyway. Hopefully that takes care of it.

7:44 PM
I'm not new to SE but it hurts a lot. Maybe because I'm extremely grumpy.
@sidran32 Thank you, I'll do it.

@Gigili You shouldn't take it personally.
Downvoting should indicate that the question or answer needs revision. It's too bad the downvoters didn't comment.

Yes, exactly that.

@Gigili, sometimes downvotes are given for no/not enough research (I was not one of the downvoters)

In any case, downvotes never should be taken personally. Rather, take it as constructive criticism. :)

8:02 PM
Anyway, thank you @sidran32 and @soandos.

@Gigili You're welcome
@Gigili If my answer fixed your problem, you can upvote and click the check to accept it. If it's helpful, you can upvote it. If it's a bad or irrelevent answer, you can downvote it if you want. :P

@sidran32, requires 125

@soandos To do what? Is there a handy chart to look up those things somewhere? >.>

downvote

I think I spent so little time with low rep that I never really learned what's disallowed.
Ah.

8:08 PM
mouse over your username on the site, then click privelages

At least, so little active time.
Ah, ok.

8:25 PM
@Gigili well, i guess a lot of us just have a CD for MS Word, that -works- and the idea of installing it and it saying "expired" soundsa a bit absurd

Simple question, I know I write a bash script that connects to ssh and then executes commands like this:
root@host:~ # ssh root@www 'ps -ef | grep apache | grep -v grep | wc -l'
How can I do multiple lines in a bash script for clarity, though?

I'm not an expert on bash scripting, so I don't remember many of the syntax offhand, but I've done that. I think you assign the output of 'ps' to an array and then do a foreach on the contents of it, assigning the output of each command to a variable and then passing it into the next one.

backslash new line

Though I think piping is just fine.

google about bash and line continuation
@sidran32 you're not understanding his question

8:28 PM
@barlop, I suspect that when he uninstalled his old Word, it didn't clear out the settings saying it was under an expired license (which is typical of trial programs). When he reinstalled, it probably reused that old license key. Not really that absurd. He probably didn't have to buy a whole new CD, just a new license (though either one would cost the same so what he did was fine).

I meant the pipe guy, you misread him.
you may be right with that ms word guy
most of us don't end up with an expired ms word, it is unusual
we either have our own computers or work on others and still unusual

@barlop hmm... Maybe like a heredoc syntax for setting a variable ? (searching now)

@brian what?

@barlop When you buy a new computer and don't buy Word with it, sometimes they still give you a trial version.

@sidran32 what manufacturer does that?
i believe you by the way.

8:30 PM
@barlop I think HP did. :P

should delete the crapware

@BrianL To set a variable, like to the value of echo, you do this:
a=echo "Test";
With no spaces between the = and the variable and command.

@sidran32 in what language?

@barlop bash

how do you then display the value of a?

8:34 PM
echo $a;
IIRC. I haven't done it in a while.

just tried it didn't work
anyhow, wasn't he asking about line continuation?
you're right that echo $var displays the variable by the way for example echo $path

I just discovered the Google Books Ngram Viewer and I'm wondering... what kind of books were written in the 1600s/1700s?

no idea why he then mentioned about variables

Works for me, though I had to change it.

@DanielBeck medical books were always written.. and there would've been fiction books

8:37 PM
#!/bin/sh
a=`ls`;
echo $a;

and lots of religious books
@sidran32 that looks better. backquotes for example.

Right. Forgot those. :P
Like I said. Haven't done it in a while.

@barlop Hm. Medical books makes some sense. I searched for a few select four letter words...
Kind of an interesting graph. Made me wonder about the kinds of books that are indexed, though.
Would this be a suitable topic for English.SE?

@DanielBeck Alchemy. Mythology. The Bible was the first book to be mass published after the invention of the printing press.
History.
Mathematics. Anything worthy to be written down. :P

Philosophy was the thing prior to science.

8:41 PM
@sidran32 @Barlop Sorry, I think I found it stackoverflow.com/questions/4412238/…

@barlop Science existed in some form or another going waaay back. Philosophy always existed alongside it.
@BrianL It's ok :P

fair point but it wasn't what we'd now call science

@barlop Irrelevent to the point. :P

didn't have the scientific method
well it is relevant since you could say it wasn't science
like alchemy

@barlop They did, actually, going far back, too. Science using the scientific method is pretty old.

8:42 PM
@sidran32 Not that many math books with four letter words. See the graph (I had to censor the top part a bit, I was flagged to death in chat before...)

@DanielBeck Sorry, I'm distracted since I'm at work.

@sidran32 Yeah, best you don't click on the link or search yourself then.

@sidran32 well, 1200s i think they were still dabbling in alchemy, it wasn't thrown out.
but it would've been if they had the scientific method
peer reviewed journals!

@barlop I'm not sure about the 1200s, but alchemy was the precursor to chemistry. They just didn't know the mechanisms of what was going on. But they were studying things like any scientist did. Same with astrology. Astrology was astronomy back then.
These guys back then knew a lot more than I think most people give them credit for. :P

it wasn't "like any scientist" 'cos they were more gullible back then
their method was more gullible!
OTOH in the 60s they used to xray feet.. though that was 'cos it wasn't proven that it was dangerous
xray feet to see what size shoe

8:48 PM
@barlop Same with back then. They didn't know some things, so they made incorrect inferences. Different than being gullible. You could say that Einstein was gullible because he believed that the universe was static. :P

that could be.. though as we see the gullibility of the previous generations, perhaps the jumps of gullibility are less, if you know what I mean
like looking at the past, scientists are more skeptical than they were
more cautious to make a statement

I'd say that's a hard thing to measure.

OK, found the bug.
There are typefaces where the s looks like f.
And Google Books doesn't understand that.

@sidran32 well, why did they come up with scientific journals? and peer review in a very formal way. Maybe before then, without it, the scientific method if there was one, wasn't applied as skeptically
scientists don't tend to say much now in terms of big statements, just they have a theory, they have some evidence for it.
sometimes a lot of evidence for it.. something is likely.. e.t.c. They don't let themselves get caught.

@barlop I'd say probably when they started to formalize the process and to do error control. Before that, it's true that there was little in the way of checking each others' works. It also helps that people are more able to communicate in large groups in more modern times than back then. In those days, it probably would've been inconceivable the kind of peer reviews we do today.
The really bad work doesn't usually get through the peer review, but people that produce these things are still out there.

8:58 PM
I wonder if some work that fails peer review has actually been good and we've missed out! there may be instances of that..I wonder if anybody got a nobel and their work failed peer review initially.
though overall it's a positive thing or should be.

@TomWijsman - If you are there, I don't suppose you could buy me something quickly off of Steam and I will pay you immediately (or before) on Paypal... It isn't saving that much, so if you are busy, tell me to get stuffed!... but, annoyingly to Steam, 1GBP = 1EUR at the moment :/
I think I have a problem... buying far too much off of Steam :/ but, the sales are good!
