12:09 AM
hm
I found a molex to pci-e video power connector... the colour codes are confusing. On molex its red (5v) black black (ground x2) yellow (12v). The video side is black brown yellow... with the brown connected to ground
but brown is 3.3 v sense according to the ATX specifications

Apparently I just went on a reviewing spree and lost track of time..
Reviewed today: 460.
Oh dear.

loool
actually... that reminds me

Thats half of my total number of reviews. UH oh.
Haha, I didn't even know we had a reviewer badge, awesome.

@JourneymanGeek Yep, looks fine to me.
No ones said anything yet about my request to get /review/close for 4-5k+ users :/

12:25 AM
get more rep! ;p

I'm awful at getting rep, you know that :p
As you can see, started well, went right downhill! :P

lol
You have seen my graph right?
there's one point where my rep goes whoosh

@JourneymanGeek I'll check it :p
@JourneymanGeek A spike for the past 6 months i'd say :p

ya
it happens ;p
and the trick is, i try to answer ONE question a day
minimum

Haha, nice. You're knowledge is better than mine though :p

12:39 AM
Actually, its a mix of going for easy questions, sheer curiocity (I have answered questions i know NOTHING about based off googling) and a certain amount of knowledge
I love those 'what is this almost obsolete technology' questions

Haha.
maybe i should try that more

1:01 AM
oh
also, be a little snarky

Haha
Funny enough, I had upvoted that :p
Looking through our tops users, it actually surprises me how so many are inactive.. and that there's very few people with 10k+ rep

Well, i think when you reach 20K, there's you take it a little easy

Mhmm, although its not like 20k gives you anything insane.

(I actually stopped bothering about rep at 10K.)
Well, more than 20K gives you nothing

Yeah.

1:07 AM
If you're achievement oriented, you feel less motivated

Achievement oriented?
What would you mean by that?

if you're learning/problem solving oriented, you don't give a crap ;p
Well, the reason you answer a question
I answer it cause i want to help, or because i could learn something about others
I've never actually cared that much about rep

I like helping out the site more than anything.

precisely
then rep matters little
(or of course, real life kicks your ass...)

@JourneymanGeek Think this is advertising? superuser.com/a/362814/80670

1:11 AM
smells fishy

Instead of a run-on sentence. Run-on link

Gonna flag it.

The wording jumps around a lot. I am going to say it is a spammer or bot

The run on link was my hint :p
As well as the wording.

and the generic single name
though there's some exceptions

1:13 AM
lol

I almost named myself just "Simon" :P

generic single female name, with no proper ava...
wierd fact. Most females, especially vaguely cute ones seem to use their own pictures as gravatars ;p
most at least bother to set one
so, first name + gravatar + answer = phishy to me

Enough for a flag, for me.
wants to get 750 flag weight eventually.

XD
god, i sounded so sexist

Hahaha

1:15 AM
Are there any female regulars here?

As far as i know, nope.

There is only 1 girl in my Java programming class.

wierdly enough, i think SO proper and SF proper seem to
chat seems to be a sausage factory

lol

there's a few in my course, but none seem to be proper girlgeeks

1:16 AM
Lol
Well there are females around here, like on the SE team, and Anna Lear is a mod for programmers.

they're the female equivilent of the career management IT ape.
oh, we do have that one...

Ah. I was gonna guess Communications

the phi lady?

shrug

i can't for the life of me remember her name ;p
(to be fair.90% of my class is the CMITAPE sort...)
I think there's like one mild geek, and me...

1:19 AM
Haha

though i learnt a fair bit from one
since he works in an actual large corporate environment

hm, the volume control on my speakers is totally gone

Well off to do stuff, cya later

1:31 AM
@SimonSheehan Cya!
@TomWijsman That's pretty neat. Reminds me of my old Gameboy Printer. lol

2:08 AM
looks like i fixed it

Can anyone recommend a YouTube video downloader for Windows?

@Moshe If you use Firefox, I recommend Video Download Helper

@iglvzx Not for me, but I can recommend that.

@Moshe The add-on is also great for downloading other non-video files, as you can choose your own file types/extensions to watch for

2:40 AM
Congratulations to @slhck on 20k rep!

3:22 AM
I want to be the very best, like no one ever was

this.is.awesome
and aww. no youtube oneboxage

@JourneymanGeek You just need the right frequencies, and you have music! That's pretty cool

that is what music is ;p

I know. :P

3 hours later…
6:08 AM
Anyone know how to escape single quotes in a post?

@soandos how do you mean?

though surfasb fixed it

you're using backticks, not single quotes..

yeah, i realized. My mistake
how does one escape backticks?

@soandos add a second one?
1
A: Importing external worksheet data into Excel 2010 workbook

soandosI have never done this before, but this link seems to be what you are looking for. While it is not as easy as doing it for all of those other data sources, it can be done. All that needs to be done is enclose the path to the workbook in single quotes, and then append the standard structure for g...

is that how you want it to look?

6:18 AM
It does, but that is beucase i was confused to begin with

you wrote like so:
`=`sheet1``
I wrote like so:
`='sheet'`

got it
thanks

cheers, @soandos

4 hours later…
10:49 AM

11:10 AM
@IVoFlipse :D

@SAthya ISuck :P

@IVoFlipse :P
here's hoping mine doesn't come wrong... as it usually does

@Sathya Yeah its funny how we can buy anything FROM India, but not get anything back in
Your government probably likes everyone to feel poor

lol

11:30 AM
lol
@IVoFlipse: well, it is run by the mafia ;p

@JourneymanGeek shhh

erf
apparently while my computer was being fixed, or due to patches, the middle mouse button got set to scroll
NOT the way i like my system ><. and its one of those things i set once then forget

11:59 AM
hmm. any ideas why my PC (getting old now, but I live in China, not brave enough to build a replacement yet) which was working perfectly fine last night would suddenly be extremely noisy for an hour after turning it on tonight? then the noise disappeared again
I spent time checking all the fans, disconnecting, turning on etc - couldn't isolate which fan (if any) was causing the noise

@Gareth Building a replacement shouldn't be so hard, just take pictures or keep a working computer next to it and copy that ;) + you can ask questions here

could be a literal bug

oh sorry, by brave I meant in terms of sourcing components etc here :) No problem actually building it

or somethign that got stuck in a fan, and got pushed out of the way later
lol

but its hard to troubleshoot if it doesn't happen more frequently

12:09 PM
@Gareth: its probably the same parts... yanno. Japanese computers! American computers! ALL MADE IN CHINA!

My computer started smoking the first time I turned it on after reassembling it, I suspect I blew some dust into my GPU or near some part that got hot quickly

maybe it was the Commies. I should hide

I've blown up a PSU, gotten shocked...

the worst I had was years ago doing my sister's PC - I put the floppy power cable in the wrong way round (it didn't have any notches or sticky-out bits to guide it in) so it was pretty much instant smoke + fire on turning it on

12:11 PM
I have a scar on my finger from a little accident with a fan too...

took days to get the smell out the room :(

i vaguely recall they did
can't remember the last time...
oh wait, i just gave my last floppy drive to my brother ;p
so it was today

since the noise has gone now, I'm going to put it down to either the Secret Police, or there was something that got lodged in the fan and gradually worked its way out after being on for a while
I like @JourneymanGeek's idea that it was a bug - it's so cold here now, yet there's still flies coming into my apartment on occasion. how the hell they survive I have no idea

@Gareth: evolution
if all the bugs died when it got just a little nippy...

they do have Newegg here - maybe I should look into them for parts newegg.com.cn
I've been to the markets endless times (like the famous ones in Zhongguancun) and it's rip off stuff, really crap components as well
@JourneymanGeek true!

12:15 PM
or find a local who knows these things? ;p
our local computer mall is getting more and more... boring, but they have a few good solid parts retailers, and a few mildly interesting crapgadget vendors
misses the days when half the place was parts shops, and the other half would close down whenever the cops were spotted

yeah my nephew-in-law lives in Zhongguancun but he told me most people here just buy ready-built :( you know the deal, pay for the PC, get the ol' pirate copy of Windows XP that is responsible for most of IE6's market share these days
anyway, time to eat too many noodles. thanks for the chat!

lol
there's no such thing as too many noodles! ;p

1:06 PM
can someone look at this question ?
I am basically having problem with Apache as proxy server not forwarding proper FTP request. I see following in apache2 error log:
[error] (110)Connection timed out: proxy: FTP: attempt to connect to 253.255.90.111:8787 (*) failed
port 8787 is my proxy port, so I am suspecting that the FTP request is not forwarded to appropriate port

1:35 PM
Afternoon @PeterGrace

@tombull89 howdy tombull!

@SimonSheehan Thanks :P Wonder who helped me get there … !

A Wild @slhck appears!

hi @tombull89!

Nice quiet day today, most of the teaching staff are on strike and the school is closed to pupils so I can get a lot done :D

1:46 PM
Heh. What's the strike about?

@slhck Public sector pensions.

Ah, I see

My union is a non-striking one, but by the time I get to retirement age retirement itself would probably have been abolished and I'll have to work until I drop.

It's 08:45 here at StackExchange HQ, which means I get to do quiet, introspective work as the only people who roll in this time of morning are the sales guys, at the other side of the suite.

lol
@PeterGrace That's actually the best time for work

1:48 PM
StackExchange has a sales team?

I think there's even a biological reason behind productivity boosts from 08 till 10 AM

@tombull89 why yes, yes we do -- we sell advertising on the site, and we also have Careers 2.0 job search, which we sell our job listings to companies.
well, companies pay us to list their jobs, rather.
if you don't already have an invite to Careers 2.0, I can hook you up.

Oh, of course, as I have more than 200 rep I don't really see the adverts. And I forgot about careers as well, being Sysadmin rather than a programmer I'm not really in the market.
Unless Careers does that too?

Yep.
IT in general, sysadmin, programmer, etc.

- blink - oh, okay.
maybe I should pay more attention to the other StackExchange products.

1:51 PM
Careers is a pretty neat idea actually, yeah

haha
I have five invites, but something makes me think I can just add more at will, so, let me get the link!
@tombull89 @slhck bit.ly/txdwUr

I don't think schools (as I work in education) have the budget to advertise on Careers...there's plenty of people locally anyhoo.

lol, my best productive time for personal projects is in the middle of the night . for school, afternoon

and anyone else interested, feel free to get in on my invites there.

@PeterGrace Thanks, but there's only one listing for where I'm from, so … :P

1:53 PM
@PeterGrace Gratz. Some perks to the job, eh?

@JourneymanGeek Really? I rather like to sleep on afternoons, or randomly browse the web.

@tombull89 there are ridiculous perks for working here. If I didn't live several hours away, I would have no reason to ever leave this company, ever.

@slhck: its probably a result of school
@PeterGrace: so move ;p

@tombull89 they pay NYC subway, healthcare is completely paid for (that's a bit thing in the US), catered lunch every day
@JourneymanGeek I have two kids, and own a house. My house value is less than the mortgage due to the housing crisis, so I'm pretty stuck.

@PeterGrace but no Super Users...

1:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek house is on the market, no hits so far.

ahh
there's that i suppose

@IVoFlipse LOL, they changed your name on the site to IVo? :)

I've lived in the same place most of my life, and public transport here is good.

Do I really want lego.se on my careers profile? :P

@JourneymanGeek where are you located?

1:55 PM
now, if getting an IT job without a degree was possible...
@PeterGrace: singapore

@JourneymanGeek -- I dropped out of college first year.

@PeterGrace: dropped out twice. on my third attempt

Getting a job in IT without a degree is very possible, you just need to know how to get jobs in IT. The secret is networking.
Not cat5 networking, but social engineering networking.

eh, here... its rather difficult. VERY paper oriented society

For instance, I got this job because I knew Zypher from a previous job, he got me in for an interview.

1:57 PM
and i have none. i'm self taught, which means i have good knowledge in a few things, and none in another. and used to have social anxiety issues, and i was away a few years so not much networking here.

@IVo yeah, I saw that yesterday as I was lurking here

Same. I have no uni-level qualification, I did an apprenticeship for a year in a school (work expereince 4 days a week, 1 day at college) and that got my first job. And because I had worked in a school before that got me this job.

On the other hand, anyone i work with, or talk to, seem to think i'm more competent than i think i am. Once in a while, embarassingly, they are right ;p

I thought it appropriate to change it on the site as well :P

1:58 PM
@JourneymanGeek dunning-kreuger effect.

@JourneymanGeek Go follow those Stanford courses, that'll cheer you up :)

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to recognize their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. As Kruger and Dunnin...

@PeterGrace: probably, but this includes people who're actual IT professionals.

@JourneymanGeek It's a little annoying as I'm the really only ICT-competant person in my friends group.

I thought I couldn't program a neural network or k-means clustering algorithm. Well turns out I could :)

1:59 PM
I'm not good. I'm passionate. ;p

@IVo its being thrown into situations that take us out of our comfort zones that we're able to truly grow, right?
@ivo oh, by the way, that leg pain is almost entirely gone now. Hooray for getting in shape!

@PeterGrace In my place, we use the Pauli (or Reverse-Pauli) effect a lot.
The Pauli effect is a term referring to the apparently mysterious 'anecdotal' failure of technical equipment in the presence of certain people. The term was coined using the name of the Austrian theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli. The Pauli effect is not to be confused with the Pauli exclusion principle, which is a bona fide physical phenomenon. History Since the 20th century, the work of physics research has been divided between theorists and experimentalists (see scientific method). Only a few physicists, such as Enrico Fermi, have been successful in both roles. Lacking an aptitude or ...

@IVoFlipse: i've signed up CS101. started on one of the programming ones too

@PeterGrace great news :)

@tombull89: i'm certain i coined the reverse-pauli effect term ;p

2:01 PM
Is there an effect that makes people sound smarter when they know lots of effects? :P

@JourneymanGeek I can recommend watching the ML one too, the tutorials are really accessible

Ahhh, my brother-in-law claims he has an aura that causes computers to fail

@PeterGrace That's certainly true

now I know it by its proper name!

@IVoFlipse: well, this is in addition to two regular modules, one of which makes my head hurt

2:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek I think I should list that on my careers profile, I have the ability to make stuff work just by looking at them.

/me is trying to work out why picking a management major as a second major seemed like a good idea at the time....

@JourneymanGeek they might give you a better understanding though

@IVoFlipse: i will - i'm doing the programming methodology (from itunes U )one once my exams are over, CS 101 once it starts , then abstract programming when i have breathing room

There's always Fake Programmers if you need someone to talk to (me)

I probably need to look into blogging what i do, just to have some feedback/reviewing...
XD. my primary issues are motivation and time, honestly ;p

2:03 PM
Who moderates the superuser blog? You should get in on that.

@JourneymanGeek I can recommend taking notes while following lectures, else you have to come up with stuff you want to say
@PeterGrace well the SU blog isn't about programming really (we need a SO community blog!)

@PeterGrace: i already have one SU blog article in the backburner
@IVoFlipse: that's really the idea. I need to make myself take notes, and work through things

I'm working on several blog posts for serverfault concurrently, not sure which one is going to hatch first
I've also got an editorial I'm writing that I hope I can get approval to put on blog.stackexchange

I also know a slightly depressed java programmer/fellow geek that might help out too ;p

The one that you finish first?

2:05 PM
I feel like I have something to say about "Why are people so mean on StackExchange?" which was a quora question the other week.

define mean ;p

@PeterGrace do so, nobody's stopping you ;)

notes there's the whole ornery geek effect

put up a banner while you're at it :P
anyway, grocery shopping!

@IVo one would think, but actually even after I'm done writing a blog post, I sometimes send it to colleagues in my field for fact-check and looking-over.
My "how to install WiFi properly" post is likely going to need peer review first before I post it

2:06 PM
>_>

@PeterGrace Most of the time you should be writing blog posts for yourself anyway
but it does make for a quiet blog :P
anyway be back later

later @ivo!

where was that screenshot...

Actually, I feel very strongly about saying A) things people might be interested in hearing and B) making sure it's as factual as possible

@PeterGrace: plus.google.com/106187684082000485043/posts this isn't how you set up wifi ;p

2:08 PM
that link didn't take me to a particular post, but I have seen some interesting installs in my time
before becoming a full-on sysadmin, I was a consultant for a company that did wireless data capture for factories
some of the access point installs were... creative.

@PeterGrace: two WAPs a floor... WAPs on the same floor had the same channel

that is EXTREMELY common
very not smart
but common.

that should work
ya. We have two waps at home. I was VERY careful not to have the same channel between them, or to use common channels used by everyone else ;p

I got authorization to buy a Wi-Spy here, you would be amazed at how many APs we can hear in lower manhattan

25 story tower blocks... roughly 4 flats a floor, and about 4 blocks in relatively close LOS ;p
o0
only 5... i am amazed
ah hah...
19. much better

2:34 PM
that WTF moment when you're in the middle of a heated battle with a dragon and your wireless mouse battery dies :\

3:18 PM
FUS RO DAH

3:34 PM
@PeterGrace haha. That was the last thing I said just before the mouse died

1 hour later…
5:01 PM
@Sathya: Dragon was jealous of Horse, so now has Dragon Physics.

5:13 PM
Oh, wow. Google updated their UI.

5:24 PM
@TomWijsman LOL yeah read about it a while back

Hello

5:55 PM
@Boris_yo Hello

@iglvzx Hello
Have a question for me?

@Boris_yo No. Just saying hello back

@iglvzx Then i have question for you.

@Borisyo Okay

@iglvzx What are these for?

http://i.imgur.com/4eCkUl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/zmzCxl.jpg

6:04 PM
@Borisyo Those are moisture absorbers. You see them in packaging, to avoid possible damage from condensation or moistness
Or to keep things (usually foods) dry to last longer.
Where did you find them?

Blue found in a plastic bag wrapping laptop case i ordered.
Black was in a box with sports shoes.

@Borisyo, well, there you go. :)
@studiohack Good morning

mornin @iglvzx :)

@iglvzx Should i keep them?

evenin' all

6:13 PM
evenin'

@Boris_yo No. They will not last a long time. They can be thrown away
@DMA57361 Hello

@DMA57361 Where are you located?

@Boris_yo UK

@iglvzx Chees

hey @DMA57361

6:14 PM
@DMA57361 9:14 PM i assume
I mean 10:14 PM @DMA57361

hey @IVoFlipse - why do you persist with that typo? a passive aggresive protest?

@studiohack He haz problemz

@Boris_yo 6:15 pm

@Boris_yo And you are from Israel?

@studiohack Just a joke

6:15 PM
Anybody ever heard that lithium polymer batteries are explosive?
@IVoFlipse Sure
@IVoFlipse Yes

@Borisyo If you overcharge them, then yes, they may explode or start a fire

@iglvzx They don't have anti-overcharge protection?
@iglvzx Fire is nice when camping...

@Boris_yo You shouldn't run into any problems if you are charging them with the right device/power supply.

@iglvzx And lithiums do not explode?

@Borisyo Did you have an incident where they exploded?
@Borisyo In my experience, I have not had any fires/explosions.

6:55 PM
@iglvzx No i did not have as i treat stuff carefully.

7:31 PM
@IVoFlipse You know, my first month on superuser, I read Ivo Filipse.

@oKtosiTe That's because it is the first month I have it :P
and it won't be for a month

@IVoFlipse It's an eyesore. Does that mean I have Asperger's? :-)

@oKtosiTe Need to learn what this is.

Jeff and Joel are joined today by Chris “Moot” Poole, founder of 4chan and Canv.as.  It’s a wide ranging discussion from internet memes and tropes to the danger of the SOPA bill that is currently making it’s way through the house.

We need a number display like they have in delis. If anyone out there can get us one on the cheap, Joel would appreciate it so he can always know what podcast number we’re on.

Canvas is re-imagining a message board, because the aesthetic of forums hasn’t changed in a very long time. It’s got a focus on remixing and collaborating images. …

@slhck Probably the magical reputation fairies.. ;)
Also, hello everyone! We just had snow!
But it melted before I could get out and take pictures :(
