@curiousdannii Yes, to Christians not seeing Judaism from the inside it a lot in Judaism.SE seem legalistic. I think the question is what motivated them to focus on the minutiae of the observations, i.e. the heart behind it. I suspect what Jesus and Paul were against was partly a corruption of the practice, since transformation and purity of the heart is clearly the center of OT as well as NT.
I cannot blame them for not adopting "sola OT scriptura"; from the little I know is one of the minutiae in halakha's purpose is to erect an outer fence so they don't inadvertently cross the inner fence of the famous 613 commandments. BTW, I came across this graphic illustration of the Shema which I think apply to both Judaism and Christianity.
