@LukeMcGregor Imagine what it's like for trans people. :/ Their opinion doesn't matter because they go against the good and natural order of things.</caricature> That doesn't necessarily excuse those who consider you anywhere from an idiot to a bigot, but do consider this: actual bigots probably don't think of themselves as bigots. Trying to treat others with dignity and love is good. Do consider that what you think is loving may not be received as such.
What comes to mind is a scene from the movie Hidden Figures - which is excellent, by the way - which centers on the struggle of several black women working for NASA in the 1950s and 60s. In the scene, a white woman (Vivian) is talking with a black woman (Dorothy), with Vivian trying to claim that she's been doing her best to not be racist. Dorothy has to tell Vivian that no, she's still been racist. You can be less racist than your culture and still be racist overall.

This is why I call "white Christian men" a privileged class. Society and its institutions still, at best, treat blacks, Muslims, and women in a subpar manner compared to whites, Christians, and men. This also means that any loss of privilege feels like an attack.
Again, I am on both sides of this "debate". (There shouldn't even be sides but that's the shape of it right now.) You see me advocating for trans people in this room, but you don't see me advocating against the way inclusivity has been pushed on us, 'cause I'm doing that in a different room.
