A: According to Scripture, how should we interpret Scripture?

Dan O'DayFull Disclosure: I am going to answer this question from an Eastern Christian perspective. I've met many very intellectually gifted Protestants who share their hermeneutical approach to scripture and yet come up with widely varying positions on the interpretation of various passages. Hence 23,00...

@DanODay Thanks!

A: How did you find our site?

Jas 3.1Ok, here's my "love story". A couple of months ago (Sunday, April 15th) I was doing a Google search and came across a question by Bruce Alderman on Hermeneutics.SE about the two major philosophies of modern hermeneutics. Jon Ericson provided an excellent, and very helpful answer. I was impress...

@DanODay I would strongly suggest adding your "Disclosure" back in - I think it will be much better received as being representative of a specific perspective, rather than a general claim.

The reason I removed it is because in reality as an Eastern Lutheran I represent a mixture of both worlds of thought
While this is primarily an Eastern perspective, it's one from which I believe the West would benefit by incorporating it
But even so, I will add it back to make this clear

@Caleb Oh I didn’t see that you’d edited it. I was too afraid to open it again. :’(
@Caleb “this is a common question and frequent point of confusion for ... Christians ... songs that mention Jesus”
@Caleb I completely agree. I sometimes have this confusion myself. But in that case a relevant question would be of the form – “What kind of songs is acceptable for Christians?” or “Is it sinful to listen to Christian death metal bands?”
@Caleb These are better because they are at a higher level of abstraction and thus more likely to be useful to multiple people in multiple scenarios. Secondly and more importantly, they make it possible to discuss the issue using general principles without resorting to anything obscene.
@Caleb If it were up to me I would rather have that question deleted instead of maintaining it in a closed form. Because if we maintain it we might set a precedent. We might have to maintain the likes of – “Is X song by Nine inch nails Christian?” “Is Y song by Iron Maiden Christian?” If we don't, what basis would we give to the OP of these questions for deletion?
@Caleb But then I see your and wax’s point. The answers to that question are really nice and worth preserving. In particular this line in bold is pure gold – "I would suggest that any encouragement you feel from listening to such a song is just your heart echoing the depravity represented"
@Caleb However I think that three fourths of your answer doesn’t have a tight coupling to that question. You can easily move it into a new question of appropriate form, and it would be just as (IMHO even more) useful.
@TRiG If you download a torrent you will see a nfo file. Inside it is a full transcript of email conversation between the license holder and the content poster, authorizing the distribution of content.
@Caleb Yup you’re right. It’s not a secular site like this one. But despite of that – as a self proclaimed “general lover of Linux” – you might enjoy the Ubuntu Christian edition. livingtorrents.com/torrents-details.php?id=684
@waxeagle Please put in your thoughts also...
