Q: Are scientific findings a test to Christians' Faith?

Jonathon ByrdScience suggest that the earth is millions of years old and many Christians accept this premise. Instead of accepting that God created everything in six days, they accept the finding of scientists based on scientific evidence. I am a literal interpretation Christian and I have strong faith that ...

in light of this last question, how do I prevent my next question from being a duplicate:
Why do OEC discount the literal interpretation of the book of Genesis?
@flimzy @caleb @PeterTurner

@JonathonByrd: I think anyone will consider your new question an improved version of the old--which is not only allowed, but encouraged.
... since the old one is now closed, that's the perfect thing to do.
The other option is to edit the old one
But I think the new one is different enough that it deserves its own question

what do i tag my question?

Hmm

@Flimzy Yep! Only for a moment though. There's a Swing Dancing club meeting soon.

i tagged it old-earth-creation
haha
oh.. look at that. I'm a trusted user with the rest of you now

I think all three of those would be good.
@JonathonByrd Gratz!

I like that question

Ooop. Off I go again! :P

@Flimzy that's because you helped make it what it is today :)

12:30 AM
bye!
@JonathonByrd: Okay, fine, give me the credit for your good question! :P

1:26 AM
@JonathonByrd I gotta run.. but I've posted the first half-or-so of my answer :)
@JonathonByrd: Feel free to let me know if this is the sort of answer you're looking for... before I spend another hour+ finishing it later tonight/tomorrow :)

@JonathonByrd I've posted my take on the question, myself, if you care to read :)
I know the article I linked is very long. I only would pay attention to the first third of it or so, as it goes into New Testament chronologies and such later on, which is outside the scope of your question. :P

A: How literally is Romans 10:14 supposed to be taken?

dancekClaim: Augustine taught that deaf people (without today's cochlear implants) wouldn't be able to be saved merely because they wouldn't be able to hear people telling them about the Gospel. The claim is just false. Granted, Augustine did call deafness a "hindrance to faith" -- but in the sense o...

@ElendiaStarman given that the premise is false, the question might be better off closed or edited...

@dancek Why does a false premise necessarily mean that question is bad? After all, your answer is a good answer as it shows that the premise is false, giving valuable historical information in the process.

@ElendiaStarman I'm not saying the question is bad, I'm saying it might be better to either close it (so no new answers assuming a false premise are written) or to edit it (considering new important information)
@ElendiaStarman I'm not complaining if it stays as is.

Hmm.
Personally, I don't feel strongly enough to edit (or close) and where I got that false premise from can be seen in the chat transcript I linked to at the very beginning.

@Jonathon I think the new question looks alright. You might edit your comment about the weak faith being your premise into the question. "it has always seemed like this is the result of weak faith. How is my premise wrong here? " or something like that.
asking in such a way that you show not only your premise but that you leave the question open to showing your error should help the tone. Assume there is something you don't know to be found out and let the quality of answers satisfy that or not.

Time for sleeeep~~~

@Filmzy, those links you posted about evolution are just plain wrong

@BeatMe: What links?

Oh, I thought you were referring to something recent
Well, naturally, I'm not going to buy "those links are just plain wrong" as evidence that they are wrong.

yes, came to that answer and the links from your recent answer about OEC

You'll have to be much more specific than that.

8:39 AM
well, we can start with the first
there is no macroevolution per se, it's just a chain of many microevolutions

i'll remind you of chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1254/creationism-chat (this might generate a lot of text)

BTW, I'm about to go to bed, so I probably won't have a long discussion about this right now

alright, i'm in the other room and rant away ;)

CalebEditing is a beautiful thing. It is, however, a square peg and some holes are round. Q: Extremely disrespectful questions

Q: Why do OEC discount the literal interpretation of the book of Genesis?

Jonathon ByrdThis is a to rephrase the following Are scientific findings a test to Christians' Faith? It seems to me that without any outside interference, the bible itself gives no suggestion that the Book of Genesis should be taken any other way then how it's written. There are many places in the Bible...

any OEC available to chat about my question? I need to find a way to present my weak faith part without it being offensive.
well.. ping me when you're ready to chat I'll be wandering around aimlessly in command line...

4:20 PM
@JonathonByrd why include it?
is it necessary to the question/

Let me read it again.
But it does seem to me that its weak faith..
How could I express that differently

I think the question is solid, however I think the second sentence (the one people are having issues with) is necessary and has been the point of controversy
@JonathonByrd I'm saying it doesn't need to be expressed, its not related to the question. Its a belief you hold, but its not crucial to the answering of the question

@jonathon even if it is 'weak faith' romans 14 says stop judging!
so I agree with @waxeagle there...it doesn't need to be part of the question

@DTest that is a good point, "weak" faith is still faith, and only God can really judge that one

Not bad. I think bullet 2 is a non sequitur.

@Caleb What do you mean?

I got in the habit of deleting my stupid questions on the main site when they're answered in the q/a. Should I leave them in meta, though, since they're discussion?

Sorry not something I can articulate from a phone with tones of distractions, I'll try when I'm home

@a_hardin you mean your comments? you can always delete them anywhere :)

@waxeagle Okay, good. I'll just leave you hanging there. :)

4:35 PM
@waxeagle boy you guys aren't as helpful as flimzy :)

@a_hardin I saw it, I was gonna delete it, but thought it might be appropriate to leave it, Ill edit your name out so it doesn't look wierd

@Caleb I rolled back my question because I felt that the meaning was changed
@Caleb I'm here to reconsider how to make my statement without it being offensive.
@DJClayworth, I will remove that sentence within my question until I can figure out a way to rephrase it. I do respect you and I'm not looking to "make a stab" at you or your beliefs.
@Caleb @waxeagle I'm forming another question but I don't want it to be offensive or closed
Here it is, let me know your thoughts
According to a comment in my last question http://christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/2904/why-do-oec-discount-the-literal-interpretation-of-the-book-of-genesis @DJClayworth has pointed out that I am completely ignorant to the evidence of Old Earth in the Bible. **And He's right.** I have no clue about Biblical Evidence for old earth.

I'm a Young Earth Creationist. I believe that the universe was formed in six literal days and that we can track the history of the Bible in order to find an approximate date.

@JonathonByrd how is this different from your last question?

its completely different imo
This is asking for evidence of old earth creation in the bible

I'm really glad I found this site!!! Thanks for all the thoughtful content. It's really nice to find a place that intelligent discussions can take place. Keep it up, and I hope I can contribute something remotely as intelligent as the things I've read from you all. This is now my top bookmark. Thanks!

Hi @AndyJ it's nice to have you aboard.

@AndyJ awesome, glad you came

I'm gonna drop this URL to a few of my friends that have asked me tough questions.

Hey, @AndyJ glad you're here!

@AndyJ please do
btw we love new folks, but we are also looking for real live experts if you know any

@AndyJ Yeah, I've been favoriting a lot of the questions that always seem to come up

4:52 PM
Well, I know some really smart Christian folks as well... I will mention this site to them as well. I am not an expert, but I do find these discussions build my faith, and for that I thank you all. Back to reading the questions!

woot! Announcer badge!

ok I changed it

@a_hardin awesome

In my last question http://christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/2904/why-do-oec-discount-the-literal-interpretation-of-the-book-of-genesis I was looking for Old Earth Creationist's personal priorities as to why they discount the Bible's literal interpretation. I asked for no scientific evidence to be posted so as to avoid argument.

According to a comment by another user, apparently there's Biblical evidence for an Old Earth. As a Young Earth/Literal Christian I have never been introduced to this theory before. Thus my question.

I really didn't know if we'd get that many clicks from /r/christianity

4:55 PM
Peeps, is this an appropriate question?

@JonathonByrd I guess it works...I think it might just be better to scrub the ref to the prev question and ask for Biblical Evidence for OEC

5:07 PM
@jonathon I like it as it stands, but agree w/ @waxeagle to remove the reference.

Q: When is a quote a quote?

Peter TurnerCheck out the quote on this question: What is the Biblical evidence for Old Earth? and the comments. What should we do when trying to not paraphrase the bible, but actually doing your own translation of the bible? Is it legitimate to use the quote feature for quotes with no external source?

@JonathonByrd I don't have time today for an answer, but if I remember tomorrow and no one has beaten me to it, I'll try to expand on what I mentioned in passing here yesterday.

@MichaelMyers Thanks Michael!

@Caleb I plan to wait until you're not looking and then gain 20k rep in one day

Uuuuuu guys, any chance we can use the other room for OEC/YEC stuff unless it is meta-ish such as relating to how to phrase questions for the site?

contentious issue that ...

hey i was reading that!

@DTest sorry

heh, just not interested enough to go to the other chat apparently
@waxeagle no big deal...was just scrolling down and all of sudden it was gone.

@DTest yeah its pretty neat like that :)

I'm listening to Podcast #18 and the ran through a litany of new sites from ones before us to ones after us, and I think they managed to talk right around C.SE as if it didn't exist. Quite amusing actually. Not sure if it was intential or not, just humorous.

@Caleb lolz I'm not sure what Jeff and Joel actually think about us...I haven't heard directly from either one...

Woo! Convention!
...says the 12th person to get the badge... :P

@ElendiaStarman good to get it, its a good one for a mod to have :)

@waxeagle ummm, doesn't Joel mention Christianity in podcast ... 16 or 17

@CRoss I haven't listened to them...I really should start doing that :)

8:12 PM
@waxeagle Hahaha...yeah... >.>

@waxeagle it's 16

@CRoss good deal, will have to check it out.

> The duo discusses which Stack Exchange sites don’t meet their personal expectations. The hit list includes Super User, Writing, and Gaming. Jeff goes into depth about his issues with Gaming.SE, even though it’s the fifth most trafficked site.

@CRoss It does get a mention in one of them ... I can't remember who it was but we were referred to as somebodies "new site to hate, I always to have one."

@Caleb Joel. Jeff's response is "but that's for religious reasons" (roughly)

8:38 PM
Wow that was jarring. The SE podcast ended practically mid-sentence and my player went on to some devotional on Galations.

@Caleb LOLwat?!? :P

@Caleb. Was anything interesting said? (In the podcast, not the devotional.)
@ElendiaStarman. What does the "Convention" badge mean?

@TRiG Ten posts on Meta with a score of 2 or more.

@TRiG Not particularly.

@waxeagle If i were either of them, I'd not weigh in, either way on a site like this one.

8:54 PM
@aceinthehole lol. Well notice neither have them have happened across our meta (Jeff pops in on RPG and Gardening on occasions)...(Jeff's contributions to us so far are 7 downvotes)...

@waxeagle ...huh...typical mod actions are available for Jeff... :P
I wonder what would happen if we tried to destroy Jeff Atwood's account... :P

@waxeagle interesting

@aceinthehole. Joel Spolskey has turned up on Judaism.SE once or twice. (And I used a question of his there as a jumping off point for one of mine here.)

@Sonic: Nice avatar.

@ElendiaStarman. What's your avatar?

@TRiG It's a sprite of El'endia (that is a re-colored Sonic-going-Super-Sonic pose) in front of an impossible triangle (a.k.a. Penrose triangle).

@ElendiaStarman. I'd have to see it larger. I'll have a look at your profile.
Why are people downvoting this?

Q: Why do many Christians object to same-sex civil marriage?

TRiGInspired by Joel Spolskey's question on Jewish Life & Learning, I ask why it is so common for Christians to fight against religious freedom by seeking to impose the restrictions of their denomination on all others.

9:46 PM
is it wrong that I'm a devout Christian and I manage a website that represents... well little satan kids :) haha

Satan kids?

Heading out; will be back in a few hours...

I've been reading BTB, and now I have to remind myself to walk away slowly instead of posting a rant of a question here.
Religious conservatives loved the HPV virus because it killed women. Here was a potentially fatal STI that condoms couldn’t protect you from. Abstinence educators pointed to HPV and jumped up and down—they loved to overstate HPV’s seriousness and its deadliness—in their efforts to scare kids into saving themselves for marriage.
And they fought the introduction of the HPV vaccine tooth-and-nail because vaccinating women against HPV would “undermine” the abstinence message. Given a choice between your wife, daughter, sister, or mom dying of cervical cancer or no longer being to scream “HPV IS GOING TO KILL YOU!” at classrooms full of terrified teenagers, socially conservative abstinence “educators” preferred the former.
— Dan Savage.

I am angry. I am very angry indeed. Again.
But I think a good question (or perhaps many good questions) could be made out of those posts.
But not by me. At least, not in my current frame of mind.

11:46 PM
Someone linked not long ago to a debate about the Catholic church
and one of the arguments against the Catholic church was their FUD about condoms in Africa
Because they'd rather promote abstinence to prevent HIV/AIDS, apparently in some cases to the extent of lying about the benefits of condoms.

@Flimzy. I'm not sure whether the Vatican itself has ever lied about condoms, but some of the African bishops certainly have.
Google condom sieve.

Right... I doubt the vatican has lied on that particular issue... that would get way too much press coverage, even if they wanted to anyway.

@Flimzy. Actually, a quick Google search doesn't turn up that story.
I'm certain I remember reading it.

wow

Could throw that up on Sceptics.SE.

Or just add it to my ever-growing list of prominent Christians telling barefaced lies.

11:55 PM
hehe, I bet Skeptics wouldn't really be able to answer it
that's the beauty of a good lie... there's not enough info in it to discredit it.
To disprove that lie, you'd have to do an extensive survey of every condom manufacturer in the world.
Or at least all but one... :)

If you look at my profile, you'll see that I mention that I deliberately read slacktivist because I need the occasional reminder that some Christians are actually decent people. Given the other news sources I read, I sometimes need to be reminded of that point.

'Medical specialists said it was impossible for the Aids virus to live inside condoms for any length of time.
Hrm
I don't nkow much about biology... but I do know that viruses aren't alive in the first place

They're delicate. They don't last long.

I think "survive" would probably have been a better word choice there

They reproduce fast in living tissue, but outside living tissue they break down quickly.

11:57 PM
It doesn't really change the validity of the article... it just shows the reporter doesn't understand biology :)

Of course "alive" is a matter of definition. Like many words, it has fuzzy edges.
Is that a meaningful distinction?

Only in certain contexts :)
To the majority of presumed readers of this article, they won't even know the difference.
So for them, no, it's not a meaningful distinction.

The context for that story also matters. There's an absolutely excellent book by Ben Goldacre, one chapter of which is available free online. It couldn't be included in the original edition of the book because the subject of the chapter was suing him for slander: badscience.net/2009/04/matthias-rath-steal-this-chapter
That's South Africa, not Mozambique, but I'd imagine that the cultural context is broadly similar on these issues.
