@merlynmorgangraham , @matthamilton , @jonskeet , @eimantas , @marcs : please be careful when migrating questions. 4+ of the 5 of you, each with over 10K on SO, voted to move a terrible question to Super User. The golden rule of migration is please don't migrate crap.
In the future, please just vote to close low-quality questions which don't belong on your site as off-topic, not a real question, or another appropriate close reason, and do not migrate it to another site to deal with. Thanks.

4:09 AM
@nhinkle Sorry about that. You're absolutely right. I knew the question needed to be closed and simply accepted the same reason that the previous voter(s) had given. Lesson learned.
Mind you - as an Australian (and therefore probably a descendant of convicts) I am living proof that migrating the crap from one population to another can result in good things. :)

Thanks for the response @MattHamilton. Just trying to ensure that the content on our sites stays clean. Cheers! :)

@hello71 and @tombull89 I'm curious why you flagged this question as "very low quality". The question seems reasonable to me. What did you guys see wrong with it that couldn't be fixed by a simple edit?

Q: Windows only boots into Safe Mode after reinstallation — virus related?

NeginBecause of a virus on a USB flash drive, my computer crashed. I then formatted my partition and installed Windows XP SP3. I tried it three times, but it still doesn't boot. I can go to into Safe Mode and see that Windows has been installed there. But when I try to start Windows normally, it gets...

I couldn't see anything wrong with it, so I'm leaving the flag unresolved for now. If you guys can tell me what the matter is I'll take action, otherwise the flag's going to be dismissed eventually.

The edit seems to be better, but there are still three separate questions. Perhaps they could be merged into one?
Also (not to change the subject), but I've been thinking about

Q: Is it still cheaper to build your own PC?

Jeff YatesWith many companies offering build-to-order PCs, where they can source components at bulk purchase prices, is there any value in building your own PC. Is it still a good option for everyone or is it only cost-effective for those building fringe equipment like high spec gaming platforms? Don't for...

@Hello71 they're separate, but related, so I think it's fair in this case

Perhaps it should be reclosed as off topic? Or maybe reopened and locked?
Er to the cheaper to build a PC question, not the LQ one.

@Hello71 it's already closed; does it matter much?

Meh.

6:53 PM
it's also pretty old. maybe i should just delete it

On yet another note, the noise is really annoying.

noise in that question?

7:05 PM
@nhinkle Welp, sorry. Only just realised I'd be pinged, quite a few notifications going into my dropdown at once. I meant it as general quality/formatting issues.

hi. i want to talk regarding one of my questions which was closed earlier. can it be opened again?

@nhinkle: I mean the notification sound.
@bubble: Which question?

Q: Virus: Going on earth. Any solution?

bubble Possible Duplicate: What to do if my computer is infected by a virus or a malware? i have a some kind of virus in system. Whenever I google something and click on any of the result links, it redirects my browser to some site goingonearth. I have tried some of the solutions available on...

@Hello71 heh, I normally have my sound on mute so it gets me too.
Thing is, a "virus" infection could be such a wide range of issues and solutions it's impossible to provide a "absolute" answer.

the duplicate mentioned here talks about general threats. I am facing a very specific type of computer malware/virus which I am unable to detect remove.
you are right. But whats the point in closing the discussion if general methords fail to remove them.
i think atleast their is no harm in keeping the question open.

7:13 PM
There's something like 20 million virus signatures I hear, we can't exactly narrow them all down perfectly.

@bubble Which is, unfortunately, why SU is unable to provide a single answer for each "help i've got a virus" question. There's too many to document. We can only offer "general aissistance"

So shouldn't we discuss threat of this type at all?
their are so many glitches in a coputer. Just because it is named as virus should we abstain from discussing it.

The thing is that we give definite answers - we can't spend all day guessing your virus

What intelligent discussion is there to be had?

As Simon said, it would be impossible to give an asnwer for every single virus out there.

7:15 PM
In addition, as the FAQ clearly states, "You should only ask "practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face."

According to my current avast! database, 2 million virus signatures, but thats not exact. Still.

We can't go through 2 million viruses just for one
it'd get hectic
Most things DO get solved by general tips

the users who misht have faced a similar problem may provide a definite answer. We are not coercing anyone to give answer
this could not be solved that is the whole point.

This is one of those then, where I suggest you backup your stuff, and nuke the system for a full re-install

7:17 PM
(personally, if I ever even suspected I'd been infected, it would back up + nuke).

Because if general virus resolution stuff isn't helping, then it may not even be fixable

in the community-wiki which provides general tips for solving such problem, it is mentioned clearly that the solutin given there is not applicale to all cases

@tombull89 Last time I got infected i skipped backup and went straight to nuke ;)

@SimonSheehan there wasn't a last time for me ;)

@tombull89 Haha. I had so little resources I couldn't use anti-virus without this horrible lag, so I turned it off. One year later...

7:20 PM
but my point is what will be the problem with opening the question? The question will sail or sink on its own.

@Bubble, while I know of your pain and if the generaic virus removal answers aren't working then I could suggest booting into an AVG live CD and running a scan overnight. Otherwise, well, either look at spending money to get it sorted or go for a re-install.

a quick search on avg virus database gives no results.
it means live cd is not an option

Why do you say liveCD is not an option?

i searched this virus in their database

AVG isn't the only database

7:24 PM
okay

Also, liveCD / USB is ALWAYS an option :P, rarely does a virus affect your BIOS

@Hello71 you can turn it off. Click the speaker icon next to "all rooms" on the upper right.

@nhinkle: Yeah, but then I don't get audibly notified. It's not that I don't like notifications, it's that it sounds so... unexpected.

I am surprised that many internet posts discuss a specific threat such as a specific virus, but why cant we

@bubble, @SimonSheehan, @Hello71 there is a fine line between good and bad "fix my virus" type questions
@bubble what's the link to yours? I can take a look

7:31 PM
@nhinkle: Scroll up.

@bubble so in this case, it's not a particularly well worded question, I'm sorry to say
Here's what I would recommend that you do. It's still possible to discuss this virus, but we need to see that you've done some work.
1) Follow all of the advice in the community FAQ about removing viruses

Q: What to do if my computer is infected by a virus or a malware?

GnoupiThis question comes up frequently, and the suggested solutions are usually the same. This community wiki is an attempt to serve as the definitive answer. I expect our best minds to participate, so we can have a comprehensive reference for this problem. What should I do if my Windows computer ...

2) If that doesn't work, edit your question to very clearly state what you've tried, what happened, and why it didn't work
3) Explain anything else you've done to try to figure it out, other information you've seen, etc.
4) Edit your question to use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. and remove irrelevant things like "heck-of-a-fee" which detract from the actual problem

actually after each of those answers I have mentioned that I have tried them and it has failed
in comments
i will include all what i have tried in the question

@bubble I'm sorry, but from looking at the comments, it seems that you have been not as polite as you could be, and also, you do not address anything specifically - you just say "I have tried things on the internet", but tell us nothing about what you've tried
If you edit your question to state exactly what you've done, and give links to other sources of info about the problem, we can consider re-opening it. In its current state though, it is not very helpful to people.

sorry for being impolite
but in this particular case i sensed too much hurry on the part of moderators

7:37 PM
Thank you for your apology. Remember, everyone here is a volunteer. We don't get paid to help. Being nice to your fellow users will make them more likely to help you out.
And no, the moderators have not acted hastily in this situation. Your question was not well worded or clear, and there's no way we could solve the problem with the information you've provided in your question.

hmmm. My english is not really very good
I will do it again

@bubble please do not post a new question though. Edit your existing question, and it may be re-opened. If you post a new question, it will just be closed as a duplicate of your first question.

okay.

thank you

thanks for all the suggestions
