@leslietownes There was a rumour around soy beans that soy products feminize men who consume them.
Nowadays people use the term "soy boy" as an insult to men perceived to be lacking masculine characteristics.
nothing more masculine than paranoia about perceived loss of masculine characteristics...
eventually some of those folks will realize that none of it matters and it's all just silly. i think a few people campaigned on this kind of thing in the recent US election and lost.
and good riddance to all of it.

@PseudoLooped I did see the message and I can see what you mean. There's definitely many flaws with my idea. Its mainly just to offload the 'burden' of voting from me
@leslietownes exactly. If you have to "force" yourself to act 'masculine' you're actually doing the exactly opposite of being masculine
08:33
@leslietownes Sort of reminds me of an tom and jerry episode.
Its called "Downhearted Duckling".

I'm enough of a veteran to know exactly what episode you're talking about without looking it up

The silence is eerie
it's early yet, at least in my time zone. :)
not too early for my daughter, who was up at 5:45.

again - no prime number question without at least one downvote.

Not quite sure what the above discussion is about , but it seems genedering is one of the themes : The german "expert:innen" is unbearable. Not enough that we must accept cold nights (because the heating does now work because we get no gas at night) and the inflation and nevertheless the begging donations at all time , we have to live also with this nonsense. Seems that Alzheimer struck here already.
peter, it was more about de-gendering. e.g. inferring "medical truths" about humanity from data derived from a subpopulation, where the subpopulation may not be biologically representative of humanity.
for example, using a study of how a disease presents in white men ages 20-40 to establish diagnostic criteria that doctors would apply to any patient.
obviously, medical data is generally hard to collect and sometimes one has to make do with non-representative populations that are easy to study (e.g. soldiers). but the awareness of the potential limitations of the data is sometimes lost, particularly if people just forget to mention it (or never know)
sorry to hear about the heating situation. is this connected to the situation in the ukraine?

@leslietownes You are very good at summarizing complex issues, like the writing of "abstracts" for publication! Probably serves you well, in your work as a lawyer, and in social interactions, and on math website(s)!
:D i try my best. if it gets too complicated, just find something else to talk about. :DD
@leslietownes :D But actually, if the discussion progresses, you clearly fully have a handle when to expand; i.e., you
i haven't seen any new political news today. just more ballot counting.
are very good at reading your audience!
@leslietownes It seems Dems clenched Senate seats in Nevada and in Arizona. Doesn't look promising for Boebart (Sp) in Colorado, but results aren't official yet. (Hence, ballot counting, as you note.)
the hodgepodge of election law sure is something to keep track of. always asking "uh, so does this mean the 'winner' right now wins, or is there a recount, or is there a runoff?" and always getting different answers depending on where you look.
16:21
@leslietownes Exactly.
@leslietownes Criminal law is similar, which vary by state, unless a crime constitutes a federal crime.
17:05
with some gray areas for federal crimes that aren't state crimes (e.g. possession of marijuana :D :D :D)
@leslietownes Good point!
i don't think it's fully within biden's power to decriminalize weed, but he could formally stop enforcement\
interesting to see what the next 2 years have in store
@leslietownes Indeed.
iowa defeated wisconsin yesterday
neither team is having the greatest year, but as a former iowan: hah!
17:50
@leslietownes :P
@amWhy Hey I was busy haha but hope you had a good fireday and sataboutday and sunoozeday!
I'll have to be off now, so see you again next time!
18:51
Don't mind me. I'm just lurking
@leslietownes I wonder... What would happened if everyone just decided to be like me for a few years. By that I mean, what if everyone just decided to stop voting at once simultaneously for the next few years. Yes, yes, its several layers into the realm of impossibility and yes I read too much fan-fiction stuff
19:11
@Goku "The greatest threat to freedom, is when good men [and women] do nothing." (Brackets mine.) The greatest threat to Democracy is when the electorate is ignorant, or otherwise, the electorate is apathetic to do anything to stop it, so much so they won't bother to spend an hour one day, to vote.
@Goku It doesn't take a rocket scientist to answer your question.
@Goku And choosing to bury one's head while doing nothing, is, at best, shirking off responsibility for your own future.
Goku: one of my favorite mottoes is "if you keep on doing what you've done, you'll keep on getting what you always got". Ditto for "not doing anything because you've never done anything."

yeah, it would be interesting if literally nobody voted, the problem is that there are some segments of voters that reliably turn up, and they end up governing everyone (and sometimes by passing laws that make it harder for normal people to vote)
21:47
@leslietownes Indeed.
Or a dictator, at worst.
22:02
covid related vote by mail stuff may have saved US democracy.
@leslietownes I agree.
