Welcome @MTibbits.
Hi, I have a lot of processes running on my ubuntu server
jrg
jrg
Well, here's the deal.
hello!
10 of them are apache
Oh my
I do not believe 97 has to be 'many' ;-)
17:12
@jrg Hi @jrg
jrg
jrg
Which is normal.
Okay.
you also have six terminals
10x apache is normel!
those are both normal
17:12
How do I have six terminals?
Okay.
that alone makes 16 out of 97
How active will your website be?
I benchmarked apache2 recently
And it ran out of memory
Did 10,000 tests
the processes labelled /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty4 are terminals
Okay.

To put it in perspective, my Ubuntu desktop is running with 8 terminals, Chrome (which is 10) and a full-fledged window manager, and it's pushing 100 if I'm trying to push it.
What are the hardware specs?
My website won't be very active.
Hardware specs...
Yep. I'm currently running KUbuntu with 200 processes.
I'm in the command prompt, what can I type to pull it up?
multicore CPU?
how much ram?
17:14
No
jrg
jrg
Also, your machine is a G4 PowerPC - which is somewhat old. (I think it'll probably have around what, 1GB ram max?)
832mb
missed that @jrg.
Yeah
yeah. Probably why with such a load you ran out of memory
17:14
wait! I saw a post with those specs y-day :=D
jrg
jrg
Alright, so as far as I can tell, you're about where you should be. :)
Okay kewl
might be interesting to see a top just before you run out of memory.
@jrg, are the mouseemu processes normal?
betting it'll be apache at the 1st 10 ;)
17:16
I can't Rinzwind because my system freeezes
And any command I execute just doesn't do anything.
"Mouseemu is a daemon to emulate mouse buttons on trackpads with only one button. It lets you: - emulate middle and right click - emulate mouse wheel -"
ahhh. Missed that.
I don't have a mouse!
So what good is that running then...
jrg
jrg
I don't think mouseemu is normal...
it says "trackpad" not mouse ;)
17:17
I don't have a trackpad either :p
so there's 2 tasks you can do w/o ;-)
jrg
jrg
It's a G4 - it's a tower. So it doesn't have a trackpad anyway @Rinzwind. used to be a Mac powah user
llol
I have to run. Cheers all.
17:18
bai!
Cheeers

Alrighty, thanks for the good answer @MTibbits. :)
Saves me from typing the same thing. ;)
I have a local ip, how can I attach it to a public ip?
@MTibbits Good answers!
Bye!
I usually do that with a virtual host in apache
oh 1 more comment: does it have to be apache? lighthttpd should require less resources :)
might be just what gets your system from freezing
