@divibisan I did not say it’s a terrorist organization. But I think many liberals at least would find the notion that a neoconfederate organization has many fine people in it to be objectionable, so I’m wondering if he has expressed regret or apologized for it.

He made that comment in the early 90's... OK. Now google "trump protects confederate monuments". i.e. they both have issues here.

@CGCampbell Yeah, Trump is clearly worse on this stuff, that’s indisputably true. And I do think it’s worth keeping in mind that Biden’s remarks were in the overall context of criticizing the organization.

@BobE I assure you that I have no intent to discredit. I’m a Biden supporter, I just saw this clip (or a shortened version of it) being circulated by a lot of Trump supporters on Twitter to accuse Biden of hypocrisy for criticizing Trump’s Charlottesville comments. So I tracked down the original video and then posted a question about it to see if Biden has apologized for these comments, and thus if Trump supporters were attacking him unfairly.

@KeshavSrinivasan: It says that Biden did not apologize during last year debates and expressed the same ideas as recently as 2007. So it directly answers your question and the answer is "no".

@JCAA Nothing in the Rolling Stone article addresses Biden’s remarks concerning the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The fact that Biden has not expressed regret for his views on busing does not imply that he has not expressed regret regarding the United Daughters of the Confederacy comment. One can continue believe that busing is bad policy while changing one’s view concerning the moral character of the membership of a neoconfederate organization. It’s also worth noting that Biden’s opposition to busing wasn’t motivated by racism, but by logistical concerns.

Examples given in the Rolling Stone article are much more significant than your exanple with United Daughters of the Confederacy. He never apologized about more significant statements. What makes you hope that he apologized for less significant one?

@JCAA As I said, one can continue to have the same view on the logistical question of practicality of busing while changing one’s moral view on what membership in a neoconfederate organization ipso facto says about a person’s character.

Busing is one thing. Supporting a Klan member - another. Busing is , by the way. a pretty big thing, especially in the South. Saying that it is about "logistics" is offensive.

@JCAA Personally I don’t like Biden’s remarks about Eastland, but he was just talking about his cordial relationship with Eastland despite the gulf in their views on civil rights and other issues, he wasn’t “supporting” Eastland. And I’m not saying busing is logistical, I’m saying that Biden’s opposition to busing was motivated by logistical considerations and not by racism.

This "non-racist consideration" is the main reason why Birmingham (AL) is desegregated and Chicago (IL) is not. Being a klansman is not about views. Admire one is like admire a member of SS.

@JCAA We’ll have to agree to disagree on our views of Biden’s statement. Regardless, I’m still hoping someone is able to post an answer showing Biden addressing the UDC remarks, whether to reaffirm the remarks or disavow him.

If you are going to characterize them as a neo-Confederate group, then you are calling them a hate group and/or terrorist organization. That's not to say that I'd disagree with that, but I don't think it's completely an honest position to split hairs on language like that.

@PoloHoleSet I would call them a hate group, I wouldn’t call them a terrorist organization. As far as I know they haven’t engaged in terrorist activity.

@JCAA - I'm sorry, which organization are you referring to that helped de-segregate Birmingham? Or fought to keep Chicago segregated? Whichever applies. Not snarky, I'm not clear on what that's a reference to, so I'm trying to figure out if maybe you were responding to a comment that was since removed or not.

Birmingham is desegregated. Chicago is segregated. Children in poor black communities have to attend failing schools. That is done by the party that rules Chicago, the Democrats.
