You are chiding your boss about what is an essentially made up difference between a referral and a reference, you are saying your opinion is “just simple logic...” You are indeed a know-it-all and the people at your last job have been harboring resentment against you about it.

Now, they should have addressed your unprofessionalism with you at the time to help you become a better professional, but they didn’t, they just rode it out till you left, but now they are done with it and you and don’t intend to help you further.
So you’re not going to get what you want out of them. What you need out of them is different, it involves self reflection and being able to take, understand, and apply criticism.
“He did it wrong and he’s unethical and no one is as smart as me!” Grow up.
