yup - good idea. Too much stuff goes in the landfill that can have a second life.... even if its just as a garden stake holding up a sapling.
@FuzzyBoots How did you get on with this ? Electrical work looks scary as frig at first.
I have a question that really doesn't suit this site, might be better here on chat.
In https://diy.stackexchange.com/questions/266763/motion-sensor-switch-always-on user says their smart switch / sensor thing "doesn't need a neutral, and can use the earth instead"
is that because its such a low power usage device that the leakage to ground is insignificant?
Or its doing something funky with AC and somehow rectifying it to DC internally in such a way a GFI won't notice ?

@Criggie Truthfully, I put it off. I have all of the necessary items, but I'm trying to figure out a good day to sit down and do it. I'm planning to do it while my wife is at work, and I am working at home, because I know that she will worry.
 
-grin- I know the feeling.... I have a PIR sensor sitting here for the last 4 years waiting to be installed!
