@Criggie are you fine tuning it with the barrel nut (usually plastic, and easy to turn by hand) that's between the shifter and cable? I didn't even realize it existed until well after a repair of my own.

hehehe no it was a little more broekn than that.
that's what it looked like on disassembly
those six fingers broke off, I felt the last one go while changing gear.
So I tried epoxying the black ratchet part onto the cast barrel part. That worked okay, but it must have needed that small amount of slop/play because it just wouldn't go back together and work.
$212 NZ for a replacement new shifter.... but fortunately I had one spare, just looked different

Wow, that's definitely more broken than mine was. I just had a cable snap on me, which made for a much slower ride home in low gear.

@BMitch There's definitely something about having the tools you need to keep moving. As well as having "no more than necessary"

I've got the tire changing kit, a multi-tool for all the hex nuts and screw drivers, a change of batteries (for the lights), but I didn't have an extra shifter cable that day. Fortunately where I ride, worst case would be a bit of a walk followed by a Lyft pickup.
