Not an american - those are 30 and 50 amp plugs, right ? where 5-15 is a 15 amp piddly little thing that is most common ?
Familiarity breeds contempt - when you handle one kind of plug/connector a lot perhaps you get a bit casual. One might even say "overconfident"
Now - your little plugs are generally unswitched too, right ?
Here in 240V land almost all sockets are switched, and the very few that aren't are often ancient.
So its common practice to plug and then click over the switch.
Perhaps the bigger fatter, scarier plug makes people think a bit more with their mammal brain and not their autonomnous reptile brain?
